This invention relates generally to new and useful improvements in garments, and more particularly to the construction of a garment whereby the sleeve is attached lto the body portion partly by meansA of a sliding fastener.

An object of the invention is to provide attaching means for joining the sleeve to the-body portion of the garment which is partly slidably detachable.

Another object of the invention is to provide a novel attaching means for joining part of the sleeve to the body portion of the garment whereby the construction affords the arms of the wearer absolute freedom of movement and ventilation to the arm pits.

A further object of the invention is to provide members of a sliding fastener for partially joining the sleeve to the body portion of the garment, preferably at the axilla region of the user, and/or at the lateral extensions thereof.

The invention relates to any garment having sleeve members, and pertains specifically tothe attaching means thereof to the arm hole of the body portion. Although the arm hole of the body portion of a garment takes in the yoke or upper back of the body portion, the shoulder and the underarm seam connecting the frontpanel to the rear of the body portion, for purposes of this invention, the arm hol-e of the body portion of the garment designates merely the opening edge of the garment to which the attaching end of the sleeve is secured.

The invention contemplates the construction of a garment whereby the arms of the wearer are given absolute freedom for swinging and whereby ventilation is afforded to the user at the armpits. This is accomplished by providing means for the partial disengaging of the sleeve from the body portion of the garment at the axillary region of the user. The disengagement is accomplished by 5 the use of a sliding fastener which is operable by hand and optionally concealed from view by the' known expedients of stitching tapes, to which the said members are attached, inwardly of the engaging edges. When the fastening means above described are disengaged, the interior of the garmentat the opening is exposed to view, and in order to conceal the shirt, body or undershirt of the wearer, a special lining may be provided adjacent the opening which is substantially porous to air and non-transparent.

In accordance with the invention and in accordance with the accompanying drawing, numeral I0 represents the body portion of agarment such as a windbreaker, while number I0 20 represents any suitable lining therefor. The body portion normally extends forwardly to form front panels II and I2. 'Numeral I3 designates attaching portions `of sleeves whilenumeral I4 designates the closing means for the garment, the said closing means as' shown being of the sliding fastener type.

The attaching edges of sleeves I3 are secured as by stitching to the body portion IIJ along the upper edges 4of the arm hole therein, the said 30 stitching being indicated by seams I5 and I5'. Scams I5 and I5 in the preferred embodiment y of the invention as shown,` extend from* approximately the upper front half of the arm hole edge over the shoulder to approximately the rear half of the arm hole edge. The unstitched or'unsecured edge portions of sleeves I3 and the arm hole at the axillary region of the user are joined by means of sliding fastening members. 'Ihus tape I1 providing one series of the cooperating mem- 40 `bers of a sliding fastener I9 is 'stitched inwardly of the edge I2 of the arm hole in the body portion of the garment, while tape member I8 containing the other series of cooperating fastening members 20 is stitched inwardly of the attaching 45 edge of sleeves I3. Thus a sliding fastener is providedwith the known concealing means utilizing flaps I2 and I3 extending off. the front panels of the body portion and extending off the attaching edges of sleeves I3 respectively.

Numeral 2| indicates the normal lining of the garment, the said lining if desirable being cut away adjacent the sliding fastener of the sleeves in order to afx thereat a lining 22 /which is substantially porous to air and non-transparent. 55

Numeral 23 indicates the locking member for the sliding fastener, and as has been said hereinbefore is concealed from view by naps I2 and I 3.

I Wish it distinctly understood that minor 5 changes and variations in the location of parts, positions of cooperating parts andy materials may all be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention and without departing from the scope of the appended claims.

I wish it also understood that the invention has application to those garments wherein the sleeve members are integral with the 'body portion. For garments last mentioned, it is only necessary to provide a slit between the sleeve and the body portion in the axillary region of the user and/or at the lateral extensions thereof, and connect the edges of the said slit by-means of a sliding fastener as described. Furthermore, in those garments which have sleeve sections integrally extending from the body portion, the sleeve section in the axillary region of the user and/or at the lateral extensions thereof, is slitted as above and a sliding fastener secured to the edges of the slit.

I claim: l. A garment including a body portion, a sleeve and a sliding fastener, the sleeve at the attaching edge being secured to the body portion at the edges of the arm hole therein in the region extending from approximately the upper front half of the said arm hole edge over the shoulder to approximately the rear half of the arm hole edge, f and the unsecured edge portions of the sleeve and the arm hole being joined by the said sliding fastener.

2. A garment including a body portion, a sleeve and a sliding fastener, the sleeve at the attaching edge being secured to the body portion along the upper edges of the arm hole therein and the unsecured edge portions of the sleeve and the arm hole being joined by the said sliding fastener.

3. A garment including a body portion lining therefor, a sleeve and a sliding fastener, the sleeve at the attaching edge being secured to the body portion along the upper edges of the arm hole therein, the unsecured edge portions of the sleeve and the arm hole being joined by the said sliding fastener, the lining adjacent the sliding fastener being substantially porous to air and nontransparent.
