2,056,067 DISPLAY DEVICE Francis J. Hines, Belmont, Mass.', assignor to Gillette Safety Razor Company, Boston, Mas s., a corporation of Delaware Application September 6, 1935, Serial No. 39,449
8 Claims. (01. 20 -79) advertised articles in convenient location for in spection and for easy removal in case of purchase. 10 For convenience in preparing and distributing such a display stand the articles should be maintained securely in orderly arrangement against accidental displacement. It is further desirable that each article or package should be capable 5. of ready removal upon occasion and without the necessity of breaking a seal or fastening device.
As an example of one field in which my invention is particularly useful I would refer to small wrapped and sealed packages, such as packages 20 .of safety razor blades. These usually are sealed in transparent wrappers of cellulose or the like through which the cover design of the package is visible. It is desirable that such packages should be mounted in a, display stand in a manner 25, which will preserve this wrapper intact. If it is, torn in removing the package from the stand the appearance of the package is impaired and the value of its moisture-proof seal is, sacrificed.
The problem is solved in accordance with my 30 invention byproviding a display stand comprising a body of sheet material folded into. doubleply at its edge and having forwardly projecting package-retaining loops of which one leg or end is formed by material folded forwardly from the 35 rear ply of the body of the stand. Theloops may be of any size or shape required toaccommodate the particular article to be handled and it is believed that never before has material from a folded-back portion of a display stand been uti- 40 lized to form a portion of a forwardly-extending article-receiving receptacle.
Another feature of my invention consists in retaining means located at the opposite ends of the line of packages presented by the display 45 stand, for the purpose of maintaining them in place when the stand is in transit after it has been loaded with its charge of packages. As herein shown tongues are arranged to engage positively opposite ends of the line of packages and 50 hold them in position against vertical or longitudinal movement in the stand.
My invention includes within its scope the novel blank herein disclosed from which my improved display stand may be made by certain cutting and 55 bending steps. The blank herein shown may be outlined from sheet material and the articleretainin 1 ps..-definecl by slitt and scoring th blank whil the latter is ma n ain in fiat condition. As. herein shown the blank comprises a central body portion with side wing portions .3 which are set off by, scored lines. By disposing slits in the blank so that they-are unsymmetrially inters cted, by he l es r d for definin the wings portions are secured in the blank which are later utilized as the outstanding ends or legs of the article-retaining loops.
These and other features of the invention will be best understood and appreciated from the following description of a preferred embodiment thereof selected for purposes of illustration and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which,-
Fig. ,1 is a view of the empty display stand in front elevation.
Fig. 2 is a corresponding view in side elevation. Fig. 3 and Fig. t are sectional details on the lines 33 and 44 of Fig. 1. V .Fig. 5 is a View in front elevation of one of the individual packages. I
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary view showing a portion of the stand with packages in place, and Fig. 7 is a plan view of the sheet blank from which the stand is made.
The stand herein illustrated is'designed to contain and display ten small packages such as the razor blade packets shown in Figs. 5 and 6.
For this purpose it is provided with a double row of vertically disposed receptacles, each of which comprises asubstantially rectangular loop 20 projecting forwardly upon the front surface of the stand as Shown in Fig. 4. The lowermost receptacles at each side of the stand are provided with a bottom supplied by a folded tongue 22.. Atthe upperend fgeach, row of receptacles isprovided a tongue 2| which projects forwardly as shown in Fig. 3 and prevents upward displacement of the row of packets held by the receptacles of the respective rows.
The stand is made preferably of sheet material such as cardboard from a blank of the character shown in Fig. 7. The blank comprises a central body portion In having a left wing II set off by a vertical scored line I2, and a right wing l3 set off by a vertical scored line I 4. The central body portion is projected upwardly into a central top portion l5. The blank is scored in the lines l2 and I4 so that the said wings may be subsequently folded rearwardly and into contact with the body of the blank, making it of double ply thickness.
At each side the central body In is provided with Cil a series of horizontal parallel slits l6 uniformly spaced and arranged so that they intersect the scored lines I2 and I4 unsymmetrically, that is, perhaps four-fifths of the length of the slits lying in the body portion Ill and the remaining fifth in one of the wing portions. The ends of each pair of slits are connected by scored lines 11 and an intermediate scored line I8 is provided in similar location to the lines I2 and I4 with reference to the inner ends of the slits. The body In of the blank is also provided with a pair of U-shaped f. slits forming a tongue 2! above each row of slits. Each wing is also provided with a downwardly extending tongue 22 scored for folding in a manner which will be presently described. i
In forming the display stand of Figs. 1 and 2 from the blank of Fig. 7 the two wing portions l l and I3 are first folded rearwardly and then secured in position by adhesive or otherwise against the back of the body portion [0. The material between each pair of slits I6 is then pulled forwardly to form a substantially rectangular loop 20. In this operation the outer end wall of each loop is supplied by material formerly lying in one of the rearwardly folded wings and defined between the slits IS and the scored lines M and II. The inner leg of each loop is supplied by material formerly lying in the body portion ID of the blank and defined by the scored lines I! and 13.
As herein shown the loops are substantially rectangular in outline and of the proper size to receive snugly one of the packages 25, although it will be apparent that by suitably locating the slits I6 and the scored lines I! and I8 loops or receptacles of any desired shape may be provided in the stand. Having shaped the loops 20 in the manner above described, the tongues 22 are folded twice on the horizontal scored lines so that they may be tucked inside the lowermost loops thus furnishing a bottom portion for the lowermost indicated the stand may be shipped to the dealer" in a fully loaded condition since each row of packages is held in place by the bottom 22 of the lowermost receptacle and tongue 2| above the uppermost receptacle.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is,-
1. A display stand comprising a body of sheet material folded into double ply at its edge and having forwardly projecting rectangular loops, one end of each loop being formed by material folded forwardly from the rear ply of the body of the stand.
2. A display stand comprising a body of sheet material having a folded edge and parallel slits extending through the folded edge defining material which is forwardly deflected in the form of an article-receiving loop.
3. A display stand comprising a body of sheet materialfolded into double ply and slashed unequal distances from the fold vertex upon opposite sides at its edges, the material between the slashes being drawn forwardly to present an article-receiving loop.
4'. A display stand comprising an edge-folded, double ply body of sheet material, there being in said body pairs of parallel slits extending transversely from the fold vertex and defining material which is displaced from both plys of the body in the form of a rectangular loop.
5. A display stand comprising an elongated upright body of sheet material having its side edges folded and being of double ply thickness, and a series of transverse article-receiving loops arranged at the side edges of the stand and comprising in part'material'folded forwardly from the rearmost ply of the body.
6. A blank for a folded display stand, comprising a sheet having an elongated central portion and narrower side wings of equal width defined by parallel scored lines'in the blank upon opposite sides of the central portion, and two series of pairs of parallel spaced slits unsymmetrically intersectedby the scored lines which set off the side wings from said central portion, the pairs defining material adapted to be deflected out of the body of the blank to'form aseries of aligned article-receiving loops at both edges of the blank.
7. A display stand comprising an edge-folded, double-ply body of sheet material, there being in the body several pairs of parallel slits extending transversely from the fold vertex and defining material which is displaced from both plys of the body in the form of rectangular loops, and an outstanding tongue located in line with the row of loops thus formed and at each end of the row. 7
8. A display stand comprising an elongated upright body of sheet material having its side edges folded and being of double-ply edge thickness, and aseries of transverse article-receiving loops arranged at the side edges of the stand and comprising in part material folded at right angles to the body of the stand from both plies thereof.
