Description
Sept. 1, 1936. g. BERG 2,052,598
SANITARY GARMENT Filed Dec. 23, 1935 INVENTOR. ELM/v5 BERG A TTORNEY.
Patented Sept. 1, 1936 UNITED srATss attests A SANITARY GARMENT Application December 23, 1985, Serial No. 55.798 8 Claims. (Cl. 128-288) This invention relates to sanitary garments to be worn by women during menstruation periods and the primary object is to provide a textile nether garment in the form of a trunk, with provision for snugly and comfortably retaining the absorbent pad in place, while also providing means for opening the crotch of the trunk, without necessarily lowering the trunk proper, to permit temporary removal of the pad when mamng urinal or bowel eliminations. The dimculty and objection to other pad supporting devices of the trunk type that have come'to my attention is that they cannot properly be worn over foundation garments such as corsets and girdles. and if worn under such garments are extremely inconvenient to manipulate or open for the above noted purposes. "l'o overcome these dimculties I provide a trunk member with an opening extending longitudinally of the crotch, and releasably close thisv opening with suitable means such as slide fasteners of a conventional type. I further provide a non-metallic means of a novel and eihcient character for yieldably securing the pad. thus eliminating the use of safety pins, buckles, or similar mechanical devices. As additional features I provide a novel design and arrangement of rubher or rubberized members, and elastic devices for maintaining the various parts in position in a neat, sanitary, and comfortable manner.
In the accompanying drawing. which illustrates a preferred embodiment of the invention:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of the garment, with fractional portions broken away.
Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the garment as shown in Fig. l. with a portion broken away.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail plan view. looking down into the garment as on line 8-3 in Fig. l, the side or leg portions being almost entirely broken away.
Fig. 4 is a front to back sectional elevation on line 4-4 in Fig. 8.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail cross section. on line H in Fig. 4, with the crotch members spread and slightly separated for purpose of better disclosure.
Referring to the drawing more particularly and by reference characters, t designatesgenerally a conventional design of trunk garment, and may be made of silk or othersuitable light weight material. It is releasably held up on the body by an elastic waist band or other suitable means. The
although snaps, buttons, or other fastening memhere may be usedfor this purpose.
The inner or upper surface of the crotch material is faced with two shields, I, of rubber or rubberized material. These shields lie adjacent to the slide fasteners and one of the shields has a fly extension 8 overlaying the iastenersto protect them mm moisture. The shields taper forwardly and rearwardly and are secured, at their outer edges by stitchings s (Figs. 2 and 5).
A panel i9 is disposed over the shields 'i and is both wider and longer than the latter, so as to project upwardly against the front and rear walls of thetrunk, asshowninFigs. 1 and-Lwhileat its sides projecting downwardly in thele'g sections, as shown in Figs. 1 and 5. This panel is secured throughout its end and nde edges to the garment proper, by stitchings Ii. The panel may, be made entirely of rubberized material. but I have here shown it in two layers or sheets II and it, the piece I: being of thin flexible rubber and stitched as at it to the somewhat larger silk gr fabricfacing it, which attaches to the trunk as at The panel is has an elongated opening it, running lengthwise of the crotch. The opening it is defined by side edges transversely spaced and looped over, as at it, to form an opening surrounding tube through which extends an elastic cord II. The ends of this cord may extend throughone side of thetube so astobeexposed for tieing and length adjustment purposes.
The panel I ll is further provided, upon its upper or inner surface, and adjacent the ends of the opening IS, with front and. rear pocket members i8 and I9, which open inwardly and downwardly to receive the ends of the absorbent pad 20, which may be of standard or conventional design. The ends of the pad are merely tucked into the pockets and are retained therein by the elasticity of the pocket material which is preferably of rubber.
To further assist in the retention of the pad ends. however, or where the pockets are not made of elastic material, I provide the pocket openings with inserted elastic members 2! which will exert' the necessary retaining grip over the pad ends.
The parts are so designed and arranged that ranged as to prevent moisture contact with the fabric partsof the gannent.
It is understood that suitable modifications may be made in the structure-as disclosed, proded such modifications come within the spirit and scope. of the appended claims. Having now therefore fully illustrated and described my invention, what '1 claim to be'new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
