6 Claims. This invention relates to an improved eyelash comb and curler, an object of the invention be-" ing to provide a device of this character which is curved 'or shaped to conform to the general contourof the eye'and which can be readily moved upwardly engaging the lashes of the upper eyelid and functioning not only to comb the lashes, but also to impart thereto an upward curve or curl. A further object is to provide a device of this charactenmhich may also be utilized .to apply mascara, petroleum jelly, or other composition or liquid into contact with the lashes while bombing and curling the same.
.A further object is to provide a device of this character which can be manufactured and sold at an extremely low price and which will most efficiently perform the functions for which it is intended.
with these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, all of which will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims, 2 In the accompanying drawing- Figure 1 is an elevation illustrating one em-- bodiment of our invention;
Figure 2 is a view .-in longitudinal section through the center of the device shown in Fig- 30 1118 1;
' Figure 3 is a view in section illustrating the device in operativeengagement with the eyelashes; g
Figure 4 is a perspective. view illustrating a 35 modification;-
Figure 5 is a view in elevation illustrating another modiflcation; and, I Figure 6 is an end view of the device shown inFigure' 5. i
40 Referring more particularly to Figures 1 and 2 of the drawing," A represents a combination comb and curler supported by a holder I having a handle 2 thereon. This holder I and handle 2 may be, as illustrated, formed from a single 5 length of wirethe intermediate portion of the wire twisted together to form a handle and the ends or extremities of the wirelaterally ofiset and providing a bifurcated or forked holder for the comb. These furc ations constitute arms 3 which are parallel to each other and which have openings or slots 4 at their ends to receive integral tongues 5 on the ends of the comb. It is to be noted that the comb is normally of a length greater than the distance between the arms 3 55 so that in order to hold the comb in thearms ,19 35, Serial No. 23,930
it is curved or bowed and the tongues 5 positioned in-the openings 4- so that the tendency of the combto straighten maintains the comb securely held between the arms. lh other words, the comb inthis particular form of our invention is preferably of celluloid or other light resilient material which can be readily bentor curvedintothe shape desired and will by reason of its own resiliency maintain itself in this shape. The curvature of the comb, conforms as nearly as possible to the curvature of the eye so that when the: comb is moved upwardly into .contact with the eyelashes indicated at 6 in Figure 3 it will comb the lashes upwardly and at the same time will cause the lashes to curl. In order to effectually curl the lashes, the body or backing of thecomb between the teeth 8 is beveled or inclined as shown at I so that a more or less sharp edge is presented to the lashes and to curl them upwardly. I
In the modification illustrated in Figure 4 of the drawing, the comb A is made of hard rubber 'or other more or less rigid, material and is normally curved and is provided centrally with an integral offset handle 9,
In the modification illustrated in Figures Sand 6 of the drawing, the comb A is also normally curved and is provided with teeth 8 in both edges with an integral handle I!) extending from one end of the body of the comb. With this form of comb, one set of teeth may beused for combing and curling the lashes of the right eye and the other set for combing and curling the lashes of the left eye by simply reversing the position of the handle and utilizing first one hand and then the other.
In all forms of the comb, the toothed edges of the combs are curved. The high point is at the center of the comb and tapers to both ends. The a body or backing is beveled or inclined between 40 the teeth as shown at I in Figure 3 and it is readily understandable that our improved comb may be utilized as an applicator of mascara, petroleumjclly, or any other composition or liquid which may be desirable for application to the lashes.
While we have illustrated and described what we believe to be a preferred embodiment of our invention, it is obvious that various changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts without departing from our invention, and hence we do not limit ourselves to the precise details set forth but consider ourselves at liberty to make such changes and alterations as may fallwithin the spiritand scope of the arms laterally ofiset relative to the handle, and
a resilient bendable comb supported by the arms and held thereby in curved formation. I
3. A device of the character described comprising an eyelash comb and curler including a body having teeth thereon to comb and curl the lashes of the eye, said teeth being disposed in a row atone edge of said body along a curved line which conforms substantially to the curvature of the eye lid in a direction extending between the nose and temple whereby the comb teeth can be moved upwardly in contact with substantially all of the eyelashes of the eye lid to turn said lashes upwardly.
4. A device of the character described comprising an eyelash comb and curler including a body conforming substantially to the curvature of the eye lid in a direction extending between the nose and temple, said body having teeth at one edge thereof disposed'in a row extending along a curved line conforming substantially to said curvature of the eye lid whereby said teeth can be moved upwardly in contact with the the upper eye lid and substantially all of the eyelashes of said lid to turn said lashes upwardly, the edge portions of said body between said teeth being inclined upwardly toward the outer surface of said body.
5. A device of the character described comprising an eyelash comb and curler including a body having teeth thereon to comb and curl the lashes of the eye, said teeth being disposed in'a row at one edge of said body along a curved line which conforms substantially to the curvature of the eye lid in a direction extending between the v nose and temple, and which is substantially coextensive in length with the eye lid in said direction, whereby the comb teeth can be moved upwardly in contact with substantially all of the eyelashes of the eye lid to turn said lashes upwardly.
