In the description of this invention, it will be indicated as applied to a hand bag of customary construction. This method of description, however, is not intended to be limiting in any sense, as the application of ornamentation to bags generally, by the method to be described, is Within the purposes of this invention.

Specifically, the invention provides a method whereby ornamental members may be associated with hand bags and similar articles, the manner of association being such that the ornamentation of the bag may be changed at will, in order to impart to the bag, at each such change, the appearance of a new article. Yet, for each such change, no new operation is necessary upon the bag, in order to produce 'this new association and this newly dened article. Not only are these functions produced, but there is also the distinction that the apparatus which makes this arrangement possible, under certain circumstances, itself distinguishes the bag as a new article by the appearance of the apparatus itself. The arrangement is such that the size of-the ornamentation particularly desired for the bag is of no consequence, nor, for that matter, ls any dimension of the ornament of any importance in that connection, the only determining factor being, of course, the size or dimensions oi the bag itself.

Not only is there the possibility, by means of this invention, of initially associating with any bag, any ornament of any desired dimensions, but there resides, in features of structure of the means which makes this possible, the additional factor that interchangeability oi ornaments, various in their characters either as to appearance, contouring or dimensions, is made possible. At will, the user of the bag may substitute for an ornament at that time on the bag, another ornament having entirely different characteristics, and yet the operation of association is so simple that anyone, without any particular skill, and without implements of any sort, may effectuate that result. No further work need be performed upon the material of the bag for the preparation of the bag to permit the association with it of any such new ornament. The original elements, previously arranged in permanent association with the bag for locating the iirst ornament, thereafter continue in service for the Very purpose of permitting interchangeability, and renuire no change whatsoeverl for that purpose.

bags of the type dealt with herein, of members carrying ornamentation of varied characteristics. In most cases, such varied ornamentation consisted of different initials for the benefit of the parties owning such bags. But devices of this type almost invariably included a framing element with relation to which plates or cards carrying the different initials were permitted insertion or removal. Size, however, as can easily be understood, was xedly determined by a conlo struction of this character. And in such case, the frame was always a portion of the ornamentation.

In the invention herein described, the cooperation of the frame with the ornamentation is l avoided as an essential element, although, Where desired, such an element may be introduced. The means retaining the ornamentation in position, in the constructions herein described, where the ornament carrying body is in position, is itself completely concealed, in a desired construction, and forms no part of the disclosed article.

By reason of the construction of the elements involved in the application of the ornament-carrying body to the bag, this application is accomplished without the necessary use of any implement, or the use of any other medium for assuring the retention of the ornament with relation to the bag. The ornament is assembled by the simple operation of slipping the ornament over a retainer xedly related to the bag, and, by that operation, or by a subsequent movement of the retainer, the ornament is locked rmly upon the bag, and so remains until the user desires to remove it or replace it with another ornament.

It is, therefore, an object of the invention to provide means for assembling an ornament with a bag, and to make such ornament, once assembled, removable without mutilation of the bag, and to permit the assembly of the same or other ornamentation with the bag easily and simply without the necessity of skilled labor, and without the necessity of any new operation upon the material of the bag which might in any Way harm that material or make it unsightly.

It is another object of the invention to make possible the assembly with a bag of the type indicated, and thereafter the removal and reassembly with the bag, of ornaments oi various sizes, shapes, designations or other characteristics, indiscriminately without relation to any of those characteristics.

It is another object of the invention to provide .a means for eiectng the assembly of ornamentation with a bag of the type indicated which makes unnecessary, as a prime consideration of the ornamental effect of such ornament, any frame or other factor, and, in which, if desired, when such ornamentation is in position, the means permitting such assembly is completely out of sight, or, when a separate member bearing ornamentation is not used, the holding means itself presents a pleasing ornamentation.

It is another object of the invention to provide means for retaining ornamentation with relation to a bag of the type indicated in which the operation of assembling the ornamentation with the bag requires no special tool, and eliminates the necessity for securing media such as cement, solder or any of the customary means of fastening.

Other objects of this invention will hereinafter be set forth, or will be,apparent from the description and the drawing, 1n which are illustrated a number of embodiments of apparatus for carrying out the invention.

The invention, however, is not intended to be restricted to any particular construction or arrangement of parts, nor to any particular application of such constructions, nor to any specific method of use, nor to the various details thereof, herein shown and described, as the same may be modified in various particulars or be applied in many varied relations without departing from the spirit and scope of the claimed invention, practical embodiments of which have been herein illustrated and described without attempting to show all of the various forms and modifications in which the invention might be embodied.

On the drawing, in which the same reference characters refer to the same parts throughout, and in which are disclosed preferred embodiments:

Fig. 1 is an elevational perspective view of a pocketbook of customary construction, to which the invention has been applied;

Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view, on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, illustrating the manner of assembly of elements embodying the invention with each other and with the bag;

Fig. 3 is a view in perspective of an element secured to the bag;

Fig. 4 is a rear elevational View in perspective, illustrating the arrangement oi' means on the ornamental body for association with the element on the bag;

Bag l0, with which the invention has been associated for illustrative purposes, may, as preu viously stated, be oi any type within the particular class of containers with which this invention is concerned. In this case, the bag has walls l2 made of such material as leather which permits the penetration of the wall by a suitable implement. Openings I6 formed through the walls provide for the passage of tines I8, applied to or formed integrally with a plate 20. These tines may be bent, after passing through the openings, in order to retain the plate securely on the outer face of the wall. However, to assure more permanent retention of the plate with relation to the wall, and also to guard the wall against the cutting action of the tines as the bag is thereafter used, the tines, after passing through openings I6, are also further engaged through perforations 22 in a plate 24, positioned at the inner face of the wall. Then the tines may be bent to assure the permanent location of plate 2Q at the outer face of the bag.

Of course, many other methods of mounting plate 2G may suggest themselves, but it is not intended to limit the application of the inven- 5 tion, except in certain of its specific phases, to this manner* of attachment. It is to be noted at this time that the tines are formed as integral portions of plate 20, which they function to secure to the bag. In addition to this, the plate 10 has an extending prong 25, which is turned back to be positioned at the outer face of the plate, away from the tines. Again, while the prong may be applied to the plate in this manner in order to satisfy certain specific aspects of the invention, it still is possible to construct the apparatus by applying the prong to plate by some method other than that in which prong and plate are formed as a single, unitary, integral structure, stamped, as here, from a single piece of metal. 20

However, for economy and more eifectually to accomplish certain elements of the invention hereinafter to be referred to in greater detail, the prong is formed from the same piece of metal as plate 20, and is bent in such manner that it overlies the plate. Plate and prong, by the bending of the prong, are located in such proximity that but a narrow passage 28 results.

For assembly with the retaining means just described there may be provided ornaments of 30 which ornament 30 may be symbolic. In this case, the ornament is made of metal, although it is conceivable that such ornaments might be made of other material, so long as the portion which will cooperate with the retaining means Il will have sufficient strength to withstand the forces which will necessarily be brought to bear when the ornament is assembled with the bag. It is possible to construct ornaments of other materials than metal and to provide an element oi' metal, flxedly associated with the ornament or otherwise assembled therewith, where the material of the ornament itself is not of suiicient strength, so that the forces previously mentioned will be active only upon such metallic portions. 4.5

In ornament 3D, the metal body portion thereof, at its rear face, has applied a bridged plate member 32 which, by its manner of application to the ornament, defines a passage 34. In this case member 32 consists of a plate the ends of which 50 have been bent to provide -a pair of feet I6 which are secured to the rear face of the ornament by any suitable means, as, for instance, by soldering. Wall 38 of the member, thus retained in spaced relation to the rear face of the ornament, is intended to be inserted into passage 28. By reason of the formation of prong 26, passage 28 is made of such small proportions that the wall will encounter considerable friction when inserted into passage, or upon any attempt to separate the wall from the passage.

It is to be noted that, for efiiciency in the assembly finally erected, it is desirable that prong 26 be substantially of the same width as that of passage 34. Then, when the prong is associated 05 with the ornament, substantially no undesired movement of the ornament with relation to the bag will result, except when a sufficiently gre-at force is applied to the ornament itself in order to remove it from the bag.

In such case, the flange will actually move to clamp itself against the edge, and thereby to insure retention of the ornament on the bag Yet, because of a cam surface 42 provided by the connection of iiange 40 with wall 38, the removal of the ornament from association with the retaining means may be accomplished without material effort. y

Dimensioning of ornament and wall 38 is desired in most cases to prevent the appearance, in conjunctionwith the ornament, of any portion of the retaining means. It is, however, conceivable that, under certain conditions, the conjunctive action of ornamentation on the. retaining means and on the ornament may be desired. For that purpose, and also for the purpose that the retaining means, without any ornament retained thereby, may function independently for the purpose of ornamenting the bag, the outer face of wall 3B may be provided with suitable characters or the like, as may be desired.

In Fig. 5, there is shown a modification of the retaining means, in which a plate 44, similar to plate 2U, is provided for retention with relation to the bag material. A prong 46 is intended to be made as an element separate and distinct from the plate. A hinge connection 48 is provided so that the prong may move pivotally with relation to the plate. A leaf spring 50, or similar means, in this case shown retained upon plate 44, engages the prong in such maner as to urge it into either of two end positions. A lug 52, engaging with this spring, will act as a stop in one position, limiting the spring-induced outward movement of the prong with relation to the plate. It also will transmit the force of the spring to the prong to seat the latter firmly against the plate, or to seat such member 32 as may be assembled on the prong against the plate, so that the separating forces normally active will have no effect upon the assembly thus produced. If desired, the prong may be provided with a flange such as flange 40 of prong 26, and the dimensioning of prong and member 32 may likewise be related.

Many other changes could be effected in the particular apparatus designed, and in the methods of use set forth, and in specific details thereof, without substantially departing from the invention intended to be defined in the claims, the specific description herein being merely to illustrate operative embodiments carrying out the spirit of the invention.

What is claimed as new and useful is:-

l. An ornament and a` device for removably securing the ornament to bags m-ade of leather or similar bag material, said device including a plate, means for securing the plate in position on an outer surface of the bag, the plate having an extension turned back over the plate and forming a resilient prong, and said ornament having a portion providing a passage of a width to receive the prong therewithin and the portion then being snugly clamped between the prong and the plate, the prong, plate and portion cooperating to retain the ornament seated upon the bag in a predetermined relation.

An ornament and a devise for removably securing said ornament to bags made of leather or similar bag material, said device comprising a rst plate having a plurality of tines extending therefrom, said tines being adapted for pass-age through a wall of the bag, a second plate adapted to be positioned within the bag and retained by the tines to retain the rst plate in position on an outer surface of said wall of said bag, the rst plate having a folded back extension forming a resilient prong, said ornament having a portion, on the rear surface thereof, providing .a passage of a width to receive the prong therewithin and said portion then being snugly clamped between the prong and the iirst metallic plate, the prong having a body the length of which is substantially that of said portion, and an extending flange at the end of the prong bent toward the metallic plate, the prong, plate and portion cooperating to retain the ornament seated upon the bag in a predetermined relation.

3. An ornament and a device for removably securing said ornament to bags made of leather or similar bag material, said device including a metallic plate, means for securing the plate in position on an outer surface of the bag, a prong resiliently carried by, for movement relative to, the plate, and said ornament having a metallic portion, the metallic portion providing a passage of a width to receive the prong therewithin, the prong, plate and metallic portion cooperating to retain the portion seated upon the bag in predetermined relation.

4. An ornament and a device for removably securing said ornament to bags made of leather or similar bag material, said device including a metallic plate, means for securing the plate in position on an outer surface of the bag, a prong pivoted upon and resiliently located with relation to the plate, and said ornament having a metallic portion, the metallic portion providing a passage of a Width to receive the prong therewithin, the prong, plate and metallic portion cooperating to retain the portion seated upon the bag in a predetermined relation.

5. An ornament and a device for removably securing said ornament to bags made of leather or similar bag material, said device including a metallic plate, means for securing the plate in position on an outer surface of the bag, a prong pivoted upon and resiliently located with relation to the plate, and said ornament having a metallic portion, the metallic portion providing a passage of a width to receive the prong therewithin. the prong being normally located extending immediately over the plate, the prong, plate and metallic portion cooperating to retain the portion seated upon the bag in a predetermined relation.

6. An ornament and a device for removably securing said ornament to bags made of leather or similar bag material, said device including a metallic plate, means for securing the plate in position on an outer surface of the bag, a prong pivoted upon and resiliently located with relation to the plate, and said ornament having a metallic portion, the metallic portion providing a passage of a width to receive the prong therewithin, the prong being normally located extending immediately over the plate and when so positioned clamping the metallic portion against the plate and frictionally preventing sliding of the metallic portion oi the prong, the prong, plate and metallic portion cooperating to retain the portion seated upon the bag in a predetermined relation.

7. An ornament and a device for removably securing said ornament to bags made of leather or similar bag material, said device including a metallic plate, means for securing the plate in position on an outer surface of the bag, a prong pivoted upon and resiliently located with relation to the plate, said ornament having a metallic portion, the metallic portion providing a passage of a width to receive the prong therewithin, the prong being normally located extending immediately over the plate and when so positioned clamping the metallic portion against the plate and frictionally preventing sliding of the metallic portion off the prong, the prong having a body portion the length of which is substantially that of the metallic portion, and an extending flange at the end of the prong and beyond the body portion, the flange being bent toward the plate, the prong, plate and metallic portion cooperating to retain the portion seated upon the bag in a predetermined relation.

8. An ornament and a device for removably securing said ornament to bags made of leather or similar bag material, said device including a first metallic plate having a plurality of tines extending therefrom, said tines being adapted for passage through openings through a Wall of the bag, a second plate adapted to be positioned within the bag and receiving and retained by the tines to retain the iirst metallic plate in position on an outer surface of the bag, a prong pivoted upon and resiliently located with relation to the rst metallic plate, said ornament having a metallic portion, the metallic portion providing a passage of a width to receive the prong therewithin, the prong being normally located extending immediately over the first plate and when so positioned clamping the metallic portion against said plate and frictionally preventing sliding of the metallic portion off the prong, the prong having a body portion the length of which is substantially that of the metallic portion, and an extending iiange at the end of the prong and beyond the body portion, the fiange being bent toward the metallic plate, the prong, metallic plate and metallic portion cooperating to retain the portion seated upon the bag in a predetermined relation.

9. An ornament and a retaining device for removably securing said ornament to a bag made of flexible material, said retaining device comprising a member adapted to be permanently secured to an exposed surface of the bag and provided with a prong disposed substantially parallel to said member, said ornament provided with a looped portion on the rear surface thereof receiving said prong for detachably attaching said ornament to said member, said ornament being otherwise unconnected to said bag and covering said member when attached thereto, and said member being exposed to view when said ornament is detached therefrom, said ornament being readily removable without removing said member from the bag.

l0. An ornament and a retaining device for removably securing said ornament to an article made of flexible material, said retaining device comprising a plate having a plurality of tines adapted to extend therefrom, said tines extending through a wall of said article and thereafter bent against an inner surface of said wall for mounting said plate on the front surface of said wall, a resilient prong extending from an edge of said plate and substantially overlying said plate, and said ornament having a looped portion on the rear thereof forming a passage receiving said prong, said prong having substantially the width of said passage, and said ornament being otherwise unconnected to said article and being adapted to cover said plate and prong whereby said plate and prong are hidden from view.

l1. An ornament and a retaining device for removably securing said ornament to an article made of flexible material, said retaining device comprising a plate having a plurality of tines adapted to extend through a wall of said article and bent against an inner surface of said wall for mounting said plate on the front surface of said Wall, a resilient prong extending from an edge of said plate and substantially overlying said plate, and said ornament having a looped portion on the rear thereof forming a passage receiving said prong, said prong having substantially the width of said passage, and said ornament being otherwise unconnected to said article and being adapted to cover said plate and prong whereby said plate and prong are hidden from view, said prong having a flange turned inwardly toward said vplate and adapted to engage an edge of said looped portion for resiliently retaining said ornament on said plate.

12.-. An ornament and a retaining device for removably securing said ornament to an article having a flexible outer wall, said retaining device comprising a plate adapted to be permanently secured to said outer wall and having a resilient extension folded back upon said plate forming a prong, the free end of said prong being formed with an inwardly turned ange, and said ornament having a looped portion on the rear surface thereof adapted to receive said prong, said prong being substantially of the width of the passage formed by the looped portion to prevent side movement of the ornament, and said flange being adapted to contact an edge of said looped portion to prevent movement of the ornament off the plate. r, l

13. An ornament and a retaining device for removably securing the ornament to bags made of flexible material, said device including a plate, means for securing said plate in position on an outer surface of the bag, a resilient prong on said plate, and said ornament having means on the rear surface thereof to detachably engage said prong for retaining said ornament upon the bag in a predetermined relation, said ornament being otherwise unattached to the bag and overlying said plate and its prong to cover the same, and said plate and its prong being exposed to view when said ornament is removed therefrom.

14. An ornament mounting device comprising two separable members, one member including a flat plate and tines carried thereby adapted to penetrate the material of the article to which the ornament is to be applied for permanently securing said plate to said article, and the other member being secured to the ornament, said plate having means forming a guideway and said member secured to the ornament adapted to slidably engage the plate in said guideway for removably securing the ornament to said plate.

15. An ornament mounting device comprising two separable members, one member including a ilat plate and tines carried thereby adapted to penetrate the material of the article to which the ornament is to be applied for permanently securing said plate to said article, and the other member being secured to the ornament, said plate having a fiat resilient prong disposed in parallel relation thereto and terminating in a free end and said member secured to the ornament comprising a strip having a portion spaced from the ornament to provide a narrow slot therebetween for receiving said prong in slidable interfitting relation with said strap.

16. An ornament mounting device comprising two separable members, one member including two separable members, one member including i a flat plate and tines carried thereby adapted to penetrate the material of the article to which the ornament is to be applied for permanently securing said plate to said article, and the other member being secured to the ornament, said plate and said member secured to the ornament having intertting parts adapted to sldably engage each other for removably securing the ornament to said plate, and spring means on one of said parts for engaging the other to prevent ac- 10 cidental removal of said ornament from said plate.
