This invention aims to provide a novel and. superior means for holding, carrying and protecting various articles, among them the single service kind of impregnated paper containers now being used for the more sanitary dispensing of milk, cream, and so forth, which lend themselves peculiarly well to this unique method.

It aims, furthermore, to provide a novel way for extremely compact storage of the holding and supporting units, when they are not in actual use.

It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains.

With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In carrying out the invention, there is provided a base I, which isof frusto-pyramidal form, provided at its lower end with a reinforcing bead 2. The base 'I is open at its bottom. On its upper end, the base I has a circumscribing bead 3, like the bead 2. The base I is provided in its ends with openings which form hand holds. Some of the material set free in the formation of the openings 4 is turned to form tubular ribs 5, in

its upper edge in an outstanding, L-shaped flange III. The table 8 has any-desired number of openings II, in which tapered thimbles are mounted. Preferably, the thimbles are fixedly mounted in the openings, but they might be detachably mounted, without changing the showing of the drawings. The thimbles I2 are supplied at their 5 upper ends with outstanding flanges I4 which, cooperating with the table 8, limit the downward movement of the thimbles I2 in the openings II. The thimbles I2 are outwardly flared, to a slight extent, at their lower ends, as shown at I5. The 10 outermost portions of the thimbles I2 serve to position the tables 8 withintheir base member I. Near to its ends, and outwardly of the base I, the table 8 is provided with openings I8.

A platform I! is provided, and has depressed seats I8. At its periphery, the platform I! has a downwardly and outwardly extended L-shaped flange I9 which rests on the horizontal part of the flange III of the table 8.

A second base member is provided, shaped like the base member I, and is constructed like the base member I. The parts hereinbefore described have been designated, in connection with the second base member, by numerals previously used, with the sufiix a; The lower bead 2a of the base member I a rests on the horizontal part of the flange I9 of the platform I I, as shown in Fig.

4; or in cases where the platform I1 is not present, the said bead 2a rests directly on the horizontal part of the L-shaped flange III, which is-a part of the table 8. The vertical part of the L-shaped flange I8 serves to cup-in the structure it supports. The hook 80 of the latch I is engaged above the vertical part of the flange I8 of the table 8, and above the bead 2a of the upper base member la. Thus the parts la, 8, I7 when used, and I, are held together.

On the bead 3a of the upper base member la is placed another table 811., constructed like the table 8, parts hereinbefore described having been a) designated by numerals previously used, with the sufiix a.

It is obvious that the stacking of additional similar units may be continued in the manner shown. a

A flexible bail 20 is provided, and carries an intermediate handle 2I. Each side portion of the bail 20 carries an upper, inwardly-extended projection 22, and a lower, inwardly-extended projection 23. At the lower end of each side portion of the bail 20 there is a hook 24.

If the operator wishes to carry the entire structure about, he engages the hook 24 with the tubular ribs 5a of the upper base member Ia, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the projections 22 and 23 being, respectively, above and below the L- shaped flange Ilia of the upper table 8a. If, however, he wishes to remove and carry merely the upper table 8a, then he engages the hooks 24 in the openings 16a of the upper table 8a, as shown in Fig. 4, the lower projection 23 then being above the L-shaped flange [0a of the upper table 8a. The projections 22 and 23 prevent the hook 24 from becoming accidentally disengaged from its several holds.

The containers or other articles to be held are placed in the thimbles l2 or I211. The usual function of the thimbles is to suspend the articles within them by close fitting, contact on their tapering lateral surfaces only, the region of physical contact usually being of limited width and usually ranging upward from the center of gravity of the articles. In some instances, it may be desirable to limit the downward movement of the suspended articles by an annular bulge or ring on or encircling the article, the said bulge coming to rest against the upper end of the thimble, or rather on the upper side of the thimble flange shown at Hit in Fig. 4. The depressed seats IS in the platform I! are for the reception of smaller articles which will fit in between the lower ends of the receptacles or the like which are being carried by the thimbles l2 and l2a.

The device obviously affords protection for articles, such as impregnated paper containers, cups and the like, and affords a means whereby such articles may be stored and carried about. The device, of course, is not confined to use in connection with cups.

In Fig. 5, parts hereinbefore described have been designated by numerals previously used, with the sufiix 2). Individual thimbles l2b may be provided with their own ball 25, made of any suitable material, twine if desired, whereby each one may be carried about by itself if desired, as shown in Fig. 5. In some instances the thimbles [2b (Fig. 5) are provided with outstanding flutes or grooves I00, shaped and located as desired. 7 These ribs or flutes ll!!! may be used in any of the thimbles hereinbefore or hereinafter mentioned and will permit of freer removal of certain articles held, and in addition, when used in connection with a table 8, will allow external liquids to escape from the surface of the table 8.

In Fig. 6, parts hereinbefore described have been designated by numerals previously used, with the sufiix c. When it is desired to handle a number of articles smaller than those for which the thimbles l2 and l2a were designed, a tapered,

- double-walled reducer 26, having a flared lower end 21, may be placed in the thimble 120. The taper, of which the taper 21 in Fig.6 may be taken as typical, prevents the articles from being damaged by contact either withthe reducer 26 or with the thimbles E2 or IM, attention being called to the taper or flare l5 and Ilia-in Fig. 4.

The peculiar design of the base elements I, la, and of the tables 8, 8a with the complementary flanges 9, 9a and ID, Ifla, together with the thimbles l2, IZCL, is more than a haphazardarrangement. This unique shape, together with the two-part separable construction of each unit, is of paramount importance in the conservation of valuable storage space in the plant, on the delivery and in distributing centers, during all periods of non-use. It also possesses other valuable features, for instance any number of base members I and la may be nested or telescoped very closely within one another.

Likewise, any number of separate table members B and 8a, together with all their complementary shapes, may be nested or telescoped very closely withinone another. Also, the platforms I! will nest closely within one another.

Furthermore, by inverting the base members I, 5

la, etc., the table members 8 may be placed within the bases in a most compact manner. In this arrangement, the horizontal portion of the angle 16 comes to rest on the bead 2 of the base I, the bead 3a now being on the floor. 10

When it is pointed out that the saving of space amounts to upwards of 75% of that ordinarily required, the unusual value of this particular feature becomes evident.

Other features of considerable importance are 15 the obvious saving of labor and the greater convenience in handling empties which is thus afforded.

The device may be made of metal or any other substance. It affords a means for holding and 10 carrying miscellaneously shaped articles, and for holding them during filling, closing, sealing, handling and storing. It is a well-known fact that such articles as paper cups or containers are not of a firm nature, and this is further 15 accentuated when they contain liquids, and if treated in the manner conventional with firm articles, the containers are subjected to many strains during their routine handling, which tend to weaken, crush or break them, thus caus- I0 ing them to leak. The device forming the subject matter of this application will greatly facilitate the filling, safe handling, storing and distribution of paper liquid-containers, and other articles, and will avoid physical damage to them '6 during routine handling.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:

1. In a device of the class described, a lower base member, a first table supported on the lower 40 base member, an upper base member supported on the table, a second table supported on the upper base member, a releasable latch connection between the lower base member on the one hand and the first table and the upper base member on the other hand, and a carrying bail having means for engaging the upper base member, the tables having article holding means.

2. In a device of the class described, a lower base member, a first table supported on the lower base member, an upper base member supported on the table, a second table supported on the upper base member, a releasable latch connection between the lower base member on the one hand and the first table and the upper base memher on the ther hand, and a carrying bail having means for engaging the upper base member, the tables being provided with depending article holding means extended downwardly within the base members.

3. In a device of the class described, a lower base member, a first table supported on the lower base member, an upper base member supported on the table, a second table supported on the upper base member, a releasable latch connec- 55 tion between the lower base member on the one hand andthe first table and the upper base memher on the other hand, a carrying bail having means for engaging the upper base member, the tables being provided with depending, article m holding thimbles extended downwardly into the base members, and adapters mounted in the thimbles.

4. In a device of the class described, a lower base member, a first table supported on the low- 7| er base member, an upper base member supported on the table, a second table supported on the upper base member, a releasable latch connection between the lower base member on the one hand and the first table and the upper base member on the other hand, and a carrying bail having means for engaging the upper base member, the second table having means wherewith the bail may be engaged, and. the tables having article holding means.

5. In a device of the class described, a lower base member, a first table supported on the lower base member, a platform supported on the first table, an upper base member supported on the platform, a second table supported on the upper base member, a releasable latch connection between the lower base member on the one hand and the first table and the upper base member on the other hand, and a carrying bail having means for engaging the upper base member, the tables having depending article holding thimbles, housed within the base members, and the platform having article holding seats alternating with the thimbles.

6. A device of the class described, constructed as set forth in claim 1, and further characterized by the fact that the base members are of such dimensions and shape, relatively to each other that they may be nested together, one within the other, the table members being of such dimensions and shape, relatively to each other that they may likewise be nested together, when the parts specified in claim 1 are dis-assembled.

7. A device of the class described, constructed as set forth in claim 5, and further characterized by the fact that the platforms are of such dimensions and shape, relatively to each other that a plurality of them may be nested together, one within another, when the parts specified in claim are dis-assembled.

8. In a device of the class described, an openbottomed base member, a table supported on the base member and having an upwardly-prolonged marginal rim supplied at its top with an L-shaped outstanding flange comprising horizontal and vertical parts, a depending, article holding thimble carried by the table and extended downwardly within the base member, the base member being invertible, the table and the thimble being insertib-le into the inverted base member, and the horizontal part of the flange of the table engaging the upper end of the inverted base member, to support the table and to maintain the table and the inverted base member in nested and telescoped relation.

9. In a device of the class described, a hollow base member, a table resting on the base member, the table being provided with article holding means extended down into the base member, and means for effecting a releasable connection between the base member and the table.

10. In a device of the class described, a hollow base member, a table supported on the base member, article holding means carried by the table and extended downwardly into the base member,

and a carrying bail having means for engaging either the base member or the table, at the will of an operator.

11. In a device of the class described, a hollow base member, a separate table resting on the 5 base member, and the table having apertures, and closely-conforming frustum-shaped article-holding thimbles suspended in the apertures and having open lower ends.

12. In a device of the class described, a hollow base member, a separate table resting on the base member, and the table having apertures, and thimbles suspended in the apertures, the thimbles being designed to suspend articles free of other support, the thimbles being frustum-shaped and having open lower ends.

13. In a device of the class described, a hollow base member, a separate table resting on the base member, the table having apertures supplied with tapering thimbles for holding articles, and the thimbles being provided with parallel lateral flutes angularly arranged and outwardly disposed.

14. In a device of the class described, a hollow base member, a separate table member resting on the base member, the table being provided with conforming article suspending thimbles, and similar base members of such shape and dimensions that they may be closely telescoped or nested within one another.

15. In a device of the class described, a hollow base member, a separate table member resting on the base member, the table being provided with conforming article holding thimbles, and similar tables together with their thimbles and extensions of such shape and dimensions that 55 they may be closely telescoped or nested within one another.

16. In a device of the class described, a hollow base member, a separate table member resting on the base member, the table being provided with article holding thimbles, and the base member being open at the bottom and invertible.

17. In a device of the class described, a hollow base member, a separate table member resting on the base member, the table being provided with article holding means, and the base member being of unique modified frustum design essential for receiving and supporting upon its inverted self the table member practically all of which may be contained within the base member.

18. In a device of the class described, a hollow base member, a separate table member resting on the base member, the table being provided with article holding means, and the table member being of unique modified frustum design essential to be supported by an inverted base member within which it may be almost entirely contained.

19. In a device of the class described, a single, nominally free, conforming, thimble possessing article holding means and attached thereto a suspending bail having its ends connected to opposed portions of the thimble for carrying the thimble about.
