    CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS
  • This application claims the priority of U.S. Provisional Application No. 61/772,338, filed Mar. 4, 2013, entitled “Pillow,” and U.S. Provisional Application No. 61/772,367, filed Mar. 4, 2013, entitled “Pillow,” the contents of both of which are hereby incorporated by reference in their entirety.
  • BACKGROUND
  • Pillows have a number of different uses or functions. Unfortunately, pillows are not configured to be utilized for every different use or function. As such, there is a need for a pillow that can be used for multiple uses or functions and that can be easily stored and is relatively portable.
  • BRIEF SUMMARY
  • Embodiments of the invention are directed to a pillow and method of using the same. In one embodiment, a pillow is provided comprising a first member having first and second side portions and a medial portion extending therebetween, wherein at least a portion of the first and second side portions and the medial portion define a recess; and wherein the pillow further comprises an elongate second member, the second member being structured to be removably attached to the first member within the recess. In another embodiment, the recess extends substantially around the circumference of the medial portion and the second member wraps around the medial portion. In another embodiment, the second member has first and second ends, wherein at least one of the first and second ends comprises a connector that is structured to attach the at least one of the first and second ends to at least one of the first member or the other of the first and second end of the second member. In another embodiment, the pillow further comprises an elongate third member having first and second ends, wherein at least one of the first and second ends of the third member defines a second connector that is structured to attach to the connector of the second member. In yet another embodiment, the second member comprises a connector that is structured to attach to the first member. In another embodiment, the first member is structured and is used to support, at least in part, the user's neck and head. In another embodiment, the first member is structured and is used to support, at least in part, the user's thighs, knees, calves or feet. In still another embodiment, the first member is structured and is used to support, at least in part, the user's arm, shoulder, and chest.
  • In another embodiment, a pillow is provided, wherein the pillow comprises a first member having first and second side portions and a medial portion extending therebetween, wherein at least a portion of the first and second side portions and the medial portion define a recess; and wherein a support member extends between the first and second side portions, the support member being structured to provide support to the first member to resist deformation of the recess.
  • In another embodiment, a pillow is provided, wherein the pillow comprises at least two elongate members, each having first and second ends, wherein at least one of the first and second ends of each of the elongate members defines a connector, each of the connectors being structured to matingly engage the other connector so that the ends of the elongate members corresponding to the connectors may be releaseably attached.
  • A method is provided for providing a pillow for use in body support, the method comprising providing a first member having first and second side portions and a medial portion extending therebetween, wherein at least a portion of the first and second side portions and the medial portion define a recess; providing an elongate second member; and attaching the second member to the first member within the recess. In one embodiment, the recess extends substantially around the circumference of the medial portion and the attaching step comprises wrapping the second member around the medial portion. In another embodiment, the second member has first and second ends, wherein at least one of the first and second ends comprises a connector and wherein the attaching step comprises attaching the connector to at least one of the first member or the other of the first and second end of the second member. In another embodiment, the method comprises providing an elongate third member having first and second ends, wherein at least one of the first and second ends of the third member defines a second connector; and attaching the second connector of the third member to the connector of the second member. In another embodiment, the second member comprises a connector and wherein the attaching step comprises attaching the connector to the first member. In another embodiment, the second member is used to support, at least in part, at least one of the user's torso or abdomen regions. In another embodiment, the second member is used to support, at least in part, the lumbar region of the user's back. In yet another embodiment, the second member is used to support, at least in part, the user's waist. In still another embodiment, the second member is used to support, at least in part, at least one of the upper-, mid-, or lower-region of the user's lateral side between the user's shoulders and waist.

  • DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
  • Embodiments of the present invention will now be described more fully hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which some, but not all, embodiments of the invention are shown. Indeed, the invention may be embodied in many different forms and should not be construed as limited to the embodiments set forth herein; rather, these embodiments are provided so that this discloser will satisfy applicable legal requirements. Where possible, any terms expressed in the singular form herein are meant to also include the plural form, and vice versa. Also, as used herein, the term “a” shall mean “one or more,” even though the phrase “one or more” is also used herein. Like numbers refer to like elements throughout.
  • Referring to the figures and, more particularly to FIG. 1, there is illustrated a pillow 10, according to one embodiment of the present invention. The pillow 10 comprises a first member 12 and an elongate second member 14. In other embodiments, the pillow 10 may also comprise one or more elongate third members 16. The configuration and dimensions of the pillow 10 will vary depending on the particular use. In one embodiment, as illustrated in FIG. 1, the pillow 10 embodies a cylindrical form. However, the invention is not limited to any particular configuration for the pillow 10.
  • In one embodiment, the first member 12 comprises a first side portion 12 a, a second side portion 12 b, and a medial portion 12 c. The medial portion 12 c extends between both the first side portion 12 a and the second side portion 12 b. The first member 12 may include an exterior cover or casing that may be formed of plastic, rubber, polyurethane foam, cloth, leather or other synthetic or natural covering material, including combinations of the foregoing in one or more layers, one or more of which may be removable so that it can be washed and/or replaced. For instance, in one embodiment, the first member 12 may include a first exterior cover that may be removed and a second interior cover that is not removable. In one embodiment, the removable cover is structured to be disposable. The first member 12 will further include a filling material, such as a polymer foam, gel, fiber material, feathers, cloth padding, metal or plastic springs, air, water, etc. In one embodiment, the first member 12 includes an inflatable bladder (not shown) that can be filled with a fluid or gas. The bladder may include a controller in operable communication with a pump that allows the user to adjust the degree to which the bladder is filled with fluid or water to thereby control the firmness of the first member 12 of the pillow 10.
  • The configuration and dimensions of the first member 12 will vary depending on the particular use. In one embodiment, the first side portion 12 a, second side portion 12 b, and medial portion 12 c of the first member 12 of the pillow 10 embodies a generally cylindrical form in which at least a portion of the first and second side portions and the medial portion define a recess 18. However, the invention is not limited to any particular configuration for the first member 12.
  • In one embodiment, the first member 12 is filled with a fiber material. The fiber material can be made from any kind of textile or other filling, such as a natural textile (e.g., cotton) or a synthetic textile. In one embodiment of the present invention, the fiber material has a density of about 0.05-0.2 g/cm3. Additionally, the fiber material can be utilized in combination with one or more alternative materials to obtain the desired characteristics of the first member 12.
  • In an alternative embodiment, the first member 12 is filled with a polymer foam. The foam may have an indentation force deflection (IFD) of 10 IFD to 100 IFD and, more preferably, of 20 IFD to 32 IFD. As used herein, the IFD is the amount of force, in pounds, required to indent a fifty (50) square inch, round indentor foot into a predefined foam specimen twenty-five percent (25%) of the specimen's total thickness. Test methods for determining the IFD are specified by the American Society for Testing and Material, and may include, without limitation, the test methods described in ASTM D 1564-63T or D3574.
  • In one embodiment, as mentioned above, the first member 12 includes an adjustment mechanism that is at least partially encased or enclosed by the cover of the first member 12. The adjustment mechanism enables a user to selectively and incrementally expand the exterior surface of the first member 12 in an outward direction such that the size of the first member 12 increases. The adjustment mechanism can comprise a variety of mechanical apparatus that are structured or configured to exert force in a predetermined direction, including, without limitation, an inflatable bladder, a cam or cam-follower assembly, or a piston assembly. In other embodiments, the first member 12 can comprises a plurality of adjustment mechanisms of the same or different types, e.g., multiple bladders, cam or cam-follower assemblies or piston assemblies or, alternatively, combinations of bladders, cam-follower assemblies and/or piston assemblies.
  • As mentioned above, the configuration of the first member 12 will vary depending on the particular use or intended function. In one embodiment, the first member 12 is configured such that it is capable of functioning as a leg pillow, which is advantageous as it provides support for users that sleep on their side(s) (approximately seventy percent (70%) of the population) by stabilizing the pelvis to thereby reduce pressure or torque on the user's lower spine, ligaments, and/or discs. Advantageously, where the first member 12 of the pillow 10 embodies a generally cylindrical form, the first member is symmetrical so there is no improper orientation, which eliminates the need to readjust the orientation of the pillow if the user reorients or switches sides during sleep.
  • The first and second side portions 12 a, 12 b, respectively, may be manufactured in various configurations, including, but not limited to, rectangular, cubic, circular, triangular, quadrilateral, pentagonal, hexagonal, octagonal, and other polygonal configurations, as well as configured as letters, numerals, alpha-numeric combinations and likenesses of animals and other living things (referred to collectively herein as “animate objects”) and inanimate objects. In the embodiment illustrated in FIG. 2, the first and second side portions 12 a, 12 b are generally conical in configuration. In illustrated embodiment, the first and second side portions 12 a, 12 b define two diameters associated with the opposite ends of the conical-shaped side portions. In this regard, the first diameter, which corresponds to the outwardly-facing end of each side portion, is larger than the second diameter, which corresponds to the inwardly-facing end of each side portion, such that the conical shape is formed. In one embodiment, the first diameter is approximately 20 to 21 cm, the second diameter is approximately 14 to 15 cm, and the length of each of the first and second side portions 12 a, 12 b extending from the outwardly-facing end to the inwardly-facing end is approximately 8.5 to 9 cm. The conical shapes of the first and second side portions 12 a, 12 b together with the medial portion 12 c of the first member 12, which in the illustrated embodiment also has a cylindrical configuration with a diameter that is approximately equal to the second diameter of the first and second side portions 12 a, 12 b, define the recess 18.
  • The first and second side portions 12 a, 12 b may additionally comprise structural components (referred to herein interchangeably as “structural component” or a “support member”) to aid in maintaining the shape associated with the side portions 12 a, 12 b. In the embodiment illustrated in the figures, one structural component comprises a button 17 located in the center of the outwardly-facing ends of each of the first and second side portions 12 a, 12 b. The buttons 17 may be connected by a connector, such as cordage, mesh, threading, wire, a rod, etc., extending between the first and second side portions 12 a, 12 b and through the interior of the medial portion 12 c, all of which would collectively comprise a structural component or support member extends between the first and second side portions 12 a, 12 b, the support member being structured to provide support to the first member to resist deformation of the recess 18. It should be noted that while the illustrated embodiment include buttons as structural components, other components may be used alternatively or in combination with the buttons to maintain the shape of the first and second side portions 12 a, 12 b, and more specifically to maintain the shape of the first member 12.
  • The first and second side portions 12 a, 12 b can provide other functionality. In one embodiment, at least one of the first and second side portions 12 a, 12 b can comprise one or more speakers on at least one of the outwardly-facing ends of the first and second side portions 12 a, 12 b. The first and second side portions 12 a, 12 b may additionally comprise a storage compartment, such as a pocket or an internal recess accessible via a door or flap. In one embodiment, the storage compartment is structured to receive a portable audio/video device. The device may include, but not be limited to, numerous communication devices, such as a cellular telecommunications device (i.e., a cell phone or mobile phone), personal digital assistant (PDA), a mobile Internet accessing device, or other mobile device including, but not limited to portable digital assistants (PDAs), pagers, mobile televisions, gaming devices, laptop computers, cameras, video recorders, audio/video player, radio, GPS devices, and/or any combination of the aforementioned. In one embodiment, the pillow 10 functions as an audio system by housing the integrated speaker(s). The integrated speaker(s) may comprise embedded headphones. In one embodiment, at least a portion of the electronic circuitry associated with the integrated speaker(s) is located substantially beneath the exterior surface of the pillow 10. The pillow 10 may additionally comprise an auxiliary input for headphones and the like. In another embodiment, the pillow 10 is coupled with electronic circuitry for providing power to various devices. For example, the pillow 10 may comprise a USB port for charging USB powered devices such as cellular telecommunication devices, and the like.
  • The medial portion 12 c may be manufactured in various shapes, including, but not limited to, rectangular, cubic, circular, triangular, quadrilateral, pentagonal, hexagonal, octagonal, and other polygonal configurations, as well as configured as letters, numerals, alpha-numeric combinations and likenesses of animate objects and inanimate objects. The medial portion 12 c is defined by a length extending between the first and second side portions 12 a, 12 b and, more specifically, the inwardly-facing ends of the first and second side portions 12 a, 12 b, respectively. Depending on the configuration of the medial portion 12 c, the medial portion will define a width or diameter. In the embodiment illustrated in FIG. 2, the medial portion 12 c is generally cylindrical in shape. In one embodiment, where the medial portion 12 c is generally cylindrical in shape, the length is approximately 9 cm and the diameter is approximately 12 to 13 cm.
  • The medial portion 12 c extends between the first and second side portions 12 a, 12 b and may be attached to the first and second side portions 12 a, 12 b using various methods for attachment, including, but not limited to, hook and loop fasteners, stitching, zippers, magnets, adhesive, buttons, clasps, snaps, straps, hocks, eyelets, and the like. The methods of attachment may render the medial portion 12 c and the first and second side portions 12 a, 12 b permanently affixed or detachable (such that the first member 12 may be separated and used as three individual pillow components), or a combination of the two.
  • The medial portion 12 c can additionally provide other functionality, including, but not limited to, cooling and/or heating, massaging, vibration, and/or storage. In one embodiment, the medial portion 12 c includes electronic circuitry, such as a controller, in operable communication with a mechanical vibration mechanism to provide vibrating and/or massaging functionality. The controller enables a user to alter various massaging functions. In one embodiment, the user can alter the massaging speed, pattern, intensity, and the like using the controller. In another embodiment, the first member 12 includes electronic circuitry, such as a controller, in operable communication a heating and/or cooling mechanism. The controller enables a user to increase or decrease the temperature of the medial portion 12 c. The medial portion 12 c may additionally comprise one or more storage compartments, such as one or more pockets or recesses for storing electronic devices or for storing a heating or cooling device, including, for example, a container with hot or cold fluid.
  • Additionally, as mentioned above, at least a portion of the first and second side portions 12 a, 12 b and the medial portion 12 c define a recess 18. In one embodiment, as illustrated in FIG. 2, the recess 18 comprises a circular ring around the medial portion 12 c having tapered or flared edges corresponding to the conical configuration of the first and second side portions 12 a, 12 b. In one embodiment, recess 18 has a width of approximately 9 cm adjacent to the medial portion 12 c and a width of approximately 26 cm adjacent to the outwardly-facing ends of the first and second side portions 12 a, 12 b.
  • As explained above, the pillow 10 comprises a second member 14. The configuration and dimensions of the second member 14 will vary depending on the particular use. The second member 14 may be manufactured in various shapes, including, but not limited to, rectangular, cubic, circular, triangular, quadrilateral, pentagonal, hexagonal, octagonal, and other polygonal configurations, as well as configured as letters, numerals, alpha-numeric combinations and likenesses of animate objects and inanimate objects.
  • In the embodiment illustrated in FIG. 3, the second member 14 comprises a first end 14 a and a second end 14 b and is generally rectangular in shape. The second member 14 defines a length and a width. In one embodiment, the length of the second member 14 is approximately 64 to 65 cm and the width is approximately 20 to 21 cm.

Additionally, the fiber material can be utilized in combination with one or more alternative materials to obtain the desired characteristics of the second member 14.
  • In an alternative embodiment, the second member 14 is filled with a polymer foam. The foam may have an indentation force deflection (IFD) of 7 IFD to 100 IFD and, more preferably, of 12 IFD to 25 IFD. As used herein, the IFD is the amount of force, in pounds, required to indent a fifty (50) square inch, round indentor foot into a predefined foam specimen twenty-five percent (25%) of the specimen's total thickness. Test methods for determining the IFD are specified by the American Society for Testing and Material, and may include, without limitation, the test methods described in ASTM D 1564-63T or D3574.
  • In one embodiment, the second member 14 includes an adjustment mechanism that is at least partially encased or enclosed by the cover of the second member 14. The adjustment mechanism enables a user to selectively and incrementally expand the exterior surface of the second member 14 in an outward direction such that the size of the second member 14 increases. The adjustment mechanism can comprise a variety of mechanical apparatus that are structured or configured to exert force in a predetermined direction, including, without limitation, an inflatable bladder, a cam or cam-follower assembly, or a piston assembly. In other embodiments, the second member 14 can comprises a plurality of adjustment mechanisms of the same or different types, e.g., multiple bladders, cam or cam-follower assemblies or piston assemblies or, alternatively, combinations of bladders, cam-follower assemblies and/or piston assemblies.
  • As mentioned above, the configuration of the second member 14 will vary depending on the particular use or intended functionality. In one embodiment, the second member 14 is configured such that it is capable of functioning as a lumbar pillow and, more specifically, configured to support the lumbar region of the back, i.e., the lower-back region between the user's hips and the lowest rib. This feature is advantageous as it provides additional support for users that sleep on their back, sides, and/or stomach. Together with the first member 12, the pillow 10 of the present invention provides a significant comfort solution for users that suffer from back pain.
  • The second member 14 can additionally provide other functionality, including, but not limited to, cooling and/or heating, massaging, vibration, and/or storage. In one embodiment, the second member 14 includes electronic circuitry, such as a controller, in operable communication with a mechanical vibration mechanism to provide vibrating and/or massaging functionality. The controller enables a user to alter various massaging functions. In one embodiment, the user can alter the massaging speed, pattern, intensity, and the like using the controller. In another embodiment, the second member 14 includes electronic circuitry, such as a controller, in operable communication a heating and/or cooling mechanism. The controller enables a user to increase or decrease the temperature of the second member. The second member 14 may additionally comprise one or more storage compartments, such as one or more pockets or recesses for storing electronic devices or for storing a heating or cooling device, including, for example, a container with hot or cold fluid.
  • In one embodiment, the pillow 10 further comprises a connector 20. In one embodiment, such as the one illustrated in FIG. 3, at least one of the first and second ends 14 a, 14 b of the second member 14 comprises the connector 20. However, it should be noted that other components of the pillow 10, such as the first member 12, may comprise the connector 20. Furthermore, the connector may embody other configurations and/or be positioned about the second member 14 in a manner different than that illustrated in the Figures. For example, in an alternative embodiment, the connector 20 may be located along at least one of the sides of the second member 14. In one embodiment, the connector 20 enables the second member 14 to attach to the first member 12. In an another alternative embodiment, the connector 20 enables at least one of the first and second ends 14 a, 14 b of the second member 14 to attach to the other of the first and second ends 14 a, 14 b of the second member 14. The connector 20 may comprise or embody various methods for attachment, including, but not limited to, hook and loop fasteners, zippers, magnets, adhesive, self-adhering silicone, buttons, clasps, snaps, straps, hocks, eyelets, and the like.
  • In one embodiment, the elongate second member 14 is structured to be removably attached to the first member 12 within the recess 18. In this regard, as illustrated in FIG. 2, in one embodiment the recess 18 extends around all or substantially all of the circumference of the medial portion 12 c such that the second member 14 wraps around the medial portion 12 c within the boundaries of the recess 18 and the second member 14 is nested within or substantially within the recess. In one embodiment, as illustrated in FIGS. 1 and 5, the first and second ends 14 a, 14 b of the second member 14 are joined together using a connector 20. In the embodiment illustrated in FIG. 5, the connector 20 comprises a hook and loop fastener in which at least one of the loop portion or hook portion of the connector 20 is located on the first end 14 a of the second member 14 on one side of the second member 14 and the other of the loop portion or hook portion of the connector 20 is located on the second end 14 b of the second member 14 on the opposite side of the second member 14. As illustrated in FIG. 4, the at least one of the loop portion or hook portion of the connector 20 located on the first end 14 a of the second member 14 may be positioned on an extension, such as a piece of fabric, if the corresponding surface of the second member 14 is contoured. A similar extension can be provided on the second end 14 b of the second member 14 if the other side of the second member 14 is also contoured. In such an embodiment, the second member 14 can wrap around the medial portion 12 c within the boundaries of the recess 18 and one of the first and second ends 14 a, 14 b of the second member 14 can attach to the other of the first and second ends 14 a, 14 b of the second member 14.
  • In another embodiment, at least one of the first and second ends 14 a, 14 b of the second member 14 are joined to the first member 12 using a connector 20. In this regard, the connector 20 comprises a hook and loop fastener in which at least one of the loop portion or hook portion of the connector 20 is located on at least one of the first and second ends 14 a, 14 b the second member 14 and the other of the loop portion or hook portion of the connector 20 is located on the first member 12. In such an embodiment, the second member 14 can wrap around the medial portion 12 c within the boundaries of the recess 18 and the at least one of the loop portion or hook portion of the connector 20 located on at least one of the first and second ends 14 a, 14 b of the second member 14 can attach to the other of the loop portion or hook portion located on the first member 12.
  • In still another embodiment, the connector 20 comprises a hook and loop fastener in which at least one of the loop portion or hook portion of the connector 20 is located on the second member 14 and the other of the loop portion or hook portion of the connector 20 is located on the first member 12. For example, at least one of the loop portion or hook portion of the connector 20 may be located along at least a portion of one side of the second member 14 or on both the first and second ends 14 a, 14 b of the second member 14, but on the same side of the second member. In such an embodiment, the second member 14 can wrap around the medial portion 12 c within the boundaries of the recess 18 and the at least one of the loop portion or hook portion of the connector 20 located on the second member can attach to the other of the loop portion or hook portion located on the first member 12.
  • The pillow 10 of the present may also comprise a third member 16. The configuration and dimensions of the third member 16 will vary depending on the particular use. The third member 16 may be manufactured in various shapes, including, but not limited to, rectangular, cubic, circular, triangular, quadrilateral, pentagonal, hexagonal, octagonal, and other polygonal configurations, as well as configured as letters, numerals, alpha-numeric combinations and likenesses of animate objects and inanimate objects.
  • In the embodiment illustrated in FIG. 6A and 6B, the third member 16 comprises a first end 16 a and a second end 16 b and is generally rectangular in shape. The third member 16 defines a length and a width. In one embodiment, the length of the third member 16 is approximately 64 to 65 cm and the width is approximately 20 to 21 cm.
  • The third member 16 may include an exterior cover or casing that can be formed of plastic, rubber, polyurethane foam, cloth, leather or other synthetic or natural covering material, including combinations of the foregoing in one or more layers, one or more of which may be removable so that it can be washed and/or replaced. For instance, in one embodiment, the third member 16 may include a first exterior cover that may be removed and a second interior cover that is not removable. In another embodiment, the removable cover is structured to be disposable. The third member 16 will further include a filling material, such as a polymer foam, gel, fiber material, feathers, cloth padding, metal or plastic springs, air, water, etc. In one embodiment, the third member 16 includes an inflatable bladder (not shown) that can be filled with a fluid or gas. The bladder may include a controller in operable communication with a pump that allows the user to adjust the degree to which the bladder is filled with fluid or water to thereby control the firmness of the third member 16.
  • In one embodiment, the third member 16 is filled with a fiber material. The fiber material can be made from any kind of textile, such as a natural textile (e.g. cotton) or a synthetic textile. In one embodiment of the present invention, the fiber material has a density of about 0.05-0.2 g/cm3. Additionally, the fiber material can be utilized in combination with one or more alternative materials to obtain the desired characteristics of the third member 16.
  • In an alternative embodiment, the third member 16 is filled with a polymer foam. The foam may have an indentation force deflection (IFD) of 7 IFD to 100 IFD and, more preferably, of 12 IFD to 25 IFD. As used herein, the IFD is the amount of force, in pounds, required to indent a fifty (50) square inch, round indentor foot into a predefined foam specimen twenty-five percent (25%) of the specimen's total thickness. Test methods for determining the IFD are specified by the American Society for Testing and Material, and may include, without limitation, the test methods described in ASTM D 1564-63T or D3574.
  • In one embodiment, the third member 16 includes an adjustment mechanism that is at least partially encased or enclosed by the cover of the third member 16. The adjustment mechanism enables a user to selectively and incrementally expand the exterior surface of the third member 16 in an outward direction such that the size of the third member 16 increases. The adjustment mechanism can comprise a variety of mechanical apparatus that are structured or configured to exert force in a predetermined direction, including, without limitation, an inflatable bladder, a cam or cam-follower assembly, or a piston assembly. In other embodiments, the third member 16 can comprises a plurality of adjustment mechanisms of the same or different types, e.g., multiple bladders, cam or cam-follower assemblies or piston assemblies or, alternatively, combinations of bladders, cam-follower assemblies and/or piston assemblies.
  • As mentioned above, the configuration of the third member 16 will vary depending on the particular use and intended function. In one embodiment, the third member 16 is configured such that it is capable of functioning as a lumbar pillow and, more specifically, configured to support the lumbar region of the back, i.e., the lower-back region between the user's hips and the lowest rib. This feature is advantageous as it provides additional support for users that sleep on their back, sides, and/or stomach.
  • The third member 16 can additionally provide other functionality, including, but not limited, to cooling and/or heating, massaging, vibration, and/or storage. In one embodiment, the third member 16 includes electronic circuitry, such as a controller, in operable communication with a mechanical vibration mechanism to provide vibrating and/or massaging functionality. The controller enables a user to alter various massaging functions. In one embodiment, the user can alter the massaging speed, pattern, intensity, and the like using the controller. In another embodiment, the third member 16 includes electronic circuitry, such as a controller, in operable communication a heating and/or cooling mechanism. The controller enables a user to increase or decrease the temperature of the third member 16. The third member 16 may additionally comprise one or more storage compartments, such as one or more pockets or recesses for storing electronic devices or for storing a heating or cooling device, including, for example, a container with hot or cold fluid.
  • The third member 16 further comprises a second connector 40. In one embodiment, such as the one illustrated in FIG. 6B, at least one of the first and second ends 16 a, 16 b of the third member 16 comprises the second connector 40. However, it should be noted that the second connector 40 may embody other configurations and/or be positioned about the third member 16 in a manner different than that illustrated in the Figures. For example, in an alternative embodiment, the second connector 40 may be located along at least one of the sides of the third member 16. The second connector 40 may comprise or embody various methods for attachment, including, but not limited to, hook and loop fasteners, zippers, magnets, adhesive, self-adhering silicone, buttons, clasps, snaps, straps, hocks, eyelets, and the like, that are structured to cooperate with and attach to the connector 20.
  • The elongate third member 16 is structured to be removably attached to the second member 14. In one embodiment, the connector 20 is located on at least one of the first and second ends 14 a, 14 b of the second member 14 and the second connector 40 is located on at least one of the first and second ends 16 a, 16 b of the third member 16, such that the connector 20 can be attached to the second connector 40 to connect the second member 14 and the third member 16. For example, as illustrated in FIGS. 6A, 6B, and 6C, the connector 20 is located on the second end 14 b of the second member 14 and the second connector 40 is located on the first end 16 a of the third member 16. Alternatively, the connector 20 can be located on the first end 14 a of the second member 14 and the second connector 40 can be located on the second end 16 b of the third member 16. Thus, the invention can comprise at least two elongate members, each having first and second ends, wherein at least one of the first and second ends of each of the elongate members defines a connector, each of the connectors being structured to matingly engage the other connector so that the ends of the elongate members corresponding to the connectors may be releaseably attached. In still other embodiments, multiple third members 16 are joined to the second member 14 and/or a third member 16. In the embodiment illustrated in FIGS. 6A, 6B, and 6C the third member 16 is the same length and width as the second member 14. To the extent a surface of the third member 16 is contoured, the second connector 40 can be positioned on an extension, as explained above relative to the second member 14. However, it should be noted that the third member 16 may be manufactured in a different length, width, and shape from the second member 14.
  • During use, the pillow 10 and its components, namely, the first member 12, elongate second member 14, and optional elongate third member 16, advantageously provide various functionality. For example, in one embodiment, as illustrated in FIG. 7, the first member 12 is structured and can be used to support, at least in part, the user's neck and head. In another embodiment, the first member 12 is structured and can be used to support, at least in part, the user's thighs, knees, calves and/or feet. In another embodiment, as illustrated in FIG. 8, the first member 12 is structured and can be used to support, at least in part, the user's thighs and knees. In still another embodiment, as illustrated in FIG. 9, the first member 12 is structured and can be used to support, at least in part, the user's arm, shoulder, and/or chest.
  • The elongate second member 14 and/or optional elongate third member 16 is structured and can be used to support, at least in part, at least one of the user's torso and/or abdomen regions. For example, in one embodiment, as illustrated in FIG. 7, the elongate second member 14 and/or optional elongate third member 16 is structured and can be used to support, at least in part, the lumbar region of the user's back. In another embodiment, as illustrated in FIG. 8, the elongate second member 14 and/or optional elongate third member 16 is structured and can be used to support, at least in part, at least one of the upper-, mid-, and/or lower-region of the user's lateral side between the user's shoulders and waist. In still another embodiment, the elongate second member 14 and/or optional elongate third member 16 is structured and can be used to support, at least in part, the user's waist and/or the upper-, mid-, and/or lower-region of the user's front side between the user's shoulders and knees. For example, as illustrated in FIG. 9, the elongate second member 14 and/or optional elongate third member 16 is structured and can be used to support, at least in part, the user's waist and the lower-region of the user's front side between the user's shoulders and knees.
  • Many modifications and other embodiments of the inventions set forth herein will come to mind to one skilled in the art to which these inventions pertain having the benefit of the teachings presented in the foregoing descriptions and the associated drawings. Therefore, it is to be understood that the inventions are not to be limited to the specific embodiments disclosed and that modifications and other embodiments are intended to be included within the scope of the appended claims. Although specific terms are employed herein, they are used in a generic and descriptive sense only and not for purposes of limitation.

Claims (19)

What is claimed is:
1. A pillow, the pillow comprising:
a first member having first and second side portions and a medial portion extending therebetween, wherein at least a portion of the first and second side portions and the medial portion define a recess; and
an elongate second member, the second member being structured to be removably attached to the first member within the recess.
2. A pillow according to claim 1, wherein the recess extends substantially around the circumference of the medial portion and the second member wraps around the medial portion.
3. A pillow according to claim 1, wherein the second member has first and second ends, wherein at least one of the first and second ends comprises a connector that is structured to attach the at least one of the first and second ends to at least one of the first member or the other of the first and second end of the second member.
4. A pillow according to claim 3, further comprising:
an elongate third member having first and second ends, wherein at least one of the first and second ends of the third member defines a second connector that is structured to attach to the connector of the second member.
5. A pillow according to claim 1, wherein the second member comprises a connector that is structured to attach to the first member.
6. A pillow according to claim 1, wherein the first member is structured and is used to support, at least in part, the user's neck and head.
7. A pillow according to claim 1, wherein the first member is structured and is used to support, at least in part, the user's thighs, knees, calves or feet.
8. A pillow according to claim 1, wherein the first member is structured and is used to support, at least in part, the user's arm, shoulder, and chest.
9. A method for providing a pillow for use in body support, the method comprising:
providing a first member having first and second side portions and a medial portion extending therebetween, wherein at least a portion of the first and second side portions and the medial portion define a recess;
providing an elongate second member; and
attaching the second member to the first member within the recess.
10. The method according to claim 9, wherein the recess extends substantially around the circumference of the medial portion and the attaching step comprises wrapping the second member around the medial portion.
11. The method according to claim 9, wherein the second member has first and second ends, wherein at least one of the first and second ends comprises a connector and wherein the attaching step comprises attaching the connector to at least one of the first member or the other of the first and second end of the second member.
12. The method according to claim 11, further comprising:
providing an elongate third member having first and second ends, wherein at least one of the first and second ends of the third member defines a second connector; and
attaching the second connector of the third member to the connector of the second member.
13. The method according to claim 9, wherein the second member comprises a connector and wherein the attaching step comprises attaching the connector to the first member.
14. The method according to claim 9, further comprising using the second member to support, at least in part, at least one of the user's torso or abdomen regions.
15. The method according to claim 9, further comprising using the second member to support, at least in part, the lumbar region of the user's back.
16. The method according to claim 9, further comprising using the second member to support, at least in part, the user's waist.
17. The method according to claim 9, further comprising using the second member to support, at least in part, at least one of the upper-, mid-, or lower-region of the user's lateral side between the user's shoulders and waist.
18. A pillow, the pillow comprising:
a first member having first and second side portions and a medial portion extending therebetween, wherein at least a portion of the first and second side portions and the medial portion define a recess; and wherein a support member extends between the first and second side portions, the support member being structured to provide support to the first member to resist deformation of the recess.
19. A pillow, the pillow comprising:
at least two elongate members, each having first and second ends, wherein at least one of the first and second ends of each of the elongate members defines a connector, each of the connectors being structured to matingly engage the other connector so that the ends of the elongate members corresponding to the connectors may be releaseably attached.
