Description
- Embodiments of the invention relate generally to the field of paddings and cushions for the body and more specifically to seat and chair coverings providing body support.
- Conventional seat coverings and cushions provide some cushion and support for various portions of the body. However, these devices fail to provide support and relieve pressure on various critical portions of the body. This disadvantage leads the user to continually shift position when sitting or lying for more than a few minutes.
- Some conventional seat coverings attempt to address this situation with mechanical vibrating or massaging elements. This often results in the seat covering being bulky and uncomfortable.
- Additionally, conventional seat covering typically rely on the underlying seat to provide support for various parts of the user's body. For example, seat cushions that extend to the user's legs typically do not provide support of the user's legs, but rather are used on seats that provide rigid support for the user's legs. However, some circumstances in which a comfortable seat covering would be beneficial do not allow seat coverings that have electro-mechanical elements or elements made of rigid materials containing metals. Moreover, the use incorporation of rigid structures within a seat cushion may limit the use of the seat cushion in some circumstances.
- For one embodiment of the invention, a seat cushion is disclosed that provides support and comfort for various portions of the user's body including the user's legs and knees without incorporating rigid structural elements. For one such embodiment the seat cushion is compressible for ease of transportation and storage. Other features and advantages of embodiments of the present invention will be apparent from the accompanying drawings, and from the detailed description, that follows below.
- The foregoing summary, as well as the following detailed description of preferred embodiments, is better understood when read in conjunction with the appended drawing. For the purpose of illustrating the invention, there is shown in the drawing exemplary constructions of the invention; however, the invention is not limited to the specific methods and instrumentalities disclosed. In the drawing:
-
FIG. 1 illustrates a seat cushion in accordance with one embodiment of the invention. - A seat cushion is disclosed that provides support for portions of the user's body without incorporating rigid support elements. For one embodiment of the invention the seat cushion is made of a compressible material allowing the seat cushion to be compressed for transportation and storage. For one embodiment the compressible material may be a visco-elastic material such as a low-resilience polyurethane foam (e.g., memory foam).
- In the following description, numerous specific details are set forth. However, it is understood that embodiments of the invention may be practiced without these specific details. In other instances, well-known structures and techniques have not been shown in detail in order not to obscure the understanding of this description.
- Reference throughout the specification to “one embodiment” or “an embodiment” means that a particular feature, structure, or characteristic described in connection with the embodiment is included in at least one embodiment of the present invention. Thus, the appearance of the phrases “in one embodiment” or “in an embodiment” in various places throughout the specification are not necessarily all referring to the same embodiment. Furthermore, the particular features, structures, or characteristics may be combined in any suitable manner in one or more embodiments.
- Moreover, inventive aspects lie in less than all features of a single disclosed embodiment. Thus, the claims following the Detailed Description are hereby expressly incorporated into this Detailed Description, with each claim standing on its own as a separate embodiment of this invention.
- Embodiments of the invention are applicable in a variety of settings in which seat cushions are employed.
-
FIG. 1 illustrates a seat cushion in accordance with one embodiment of the invention.Seat cushion 100, shown inFIG. 1 is made of a compressible material such as visco-elastic polyurethane foam (VPF). When in use, the VPF conforms to each portion of the user's body, reducing contact pressure with the user's body. This allows a user to remain seated for extended periods without repositioning. When not in use the VPF is compressible for ease of transportation and storage. For various embodiments of the invention, the seat cushion may have connecting portions made form suitable materials for connecting various portions of the seat cushion to one another or for securing the seat cushion to a seat. For one embodiment the seat cushion has no rigid elements.
