Description
- The present invention relates to multi-day pill holding case assemblies, and more particularly to embodiments of pill case holder and pill holding case assemblies where individual pill holding cases can be manually removed from the assembly and carried in the purse or pocket of a user, or attached to an item supported by a user, such as an article of clothing, a backpack, purse, keychain or the like.
- Many people today take several pills and/or capsules each day, either prescribed by their doctor or over-the-counter medicines they take at the suggestion of their medical advisor. In addition, many individuals also consume several vitamin pills and capsules each day. Most, if not all, of these pills and/or capsules are taken on a daily dosage frequency schedule, such as once a day, twice a day, after meals, etc. The prescribed or recommended dosage frequency may require a user to ingest specified pills or capsules during the day while the user is away from the home. In such situations, it is advantageous for the user to have access to his or her medication and vitamins at any time during the day.
- Presently available personal multi-day pill cases and pill case assemblies typically include a single case having a plurality of pill and capsule holding compartments or chambers with either a common or individual closure device. Each compartment or chamber may hold the various pills and capsules constituting the pills and capsules to be taken at one time, or over the course of a single day. Some such containers include indicia designating one of the days of the week. Normally, in a pill container assembly of multiple pill holding compartments or chambers, the user fills the compartment periodically, usually on a weekly basis from the pill container obtained from a pharmacy, nutrition food store, grocery store, or the like.
- A pill container adapted to hold a week's supply of pills and vitamins is normally too large to fit in a user's pocket or small purse. Thus, it would be advantageous to provide a user with a pill and vitamin container assembly that, in an embodiment, comprised a plurality of daily pill holding cases that were removably mounted in a multi-case holder for weekly filling, and were individually removable from the holder on a daily basis. The individual pill holding cases are small enough to fit within the purse or pocket of the user.
- In another embodiment, the present invention provides a pill/capsule holding case assembly where each pill holding case includes male and female mating elements on opposite sides of the exterior of each pill holding case. The male mating element of each pill holding case is adapted to fit into the female mating element of an adjacent pill holding case, and removably attach one pill holding case to another to form a container assembly of any desired number of days.
- In each of the embodiments of the present invention mentioned above, each individual pill holder case includes an attachment tab extending outwardly from the exterior of the pill holding case. This tab has an aperture extending through the tab, which may be used to attach the individual pill holding case to an item worn by or otherwise supported by the user, such as a keychain, belt loop, purse or purse strap, backpack strap or hook, and the like.
- A multi-day pill container assembly includes a multiple pill case holder with a plurality of apertures, each aperture removably receiving and holding a pill holding case. Each pill holding case includes a top potion, an interior chamber, and an exterior. Each individual pill holding case can be readily removed from the holder assembly, and be carried in the purse, pocket, backpack or the like, of the user that is worn or supported by the user, for ready access by the user when the user desires to ingest the pills in the case. Also, each individual pill holding case comprises an attachment tab, whereby each pill holding case can be attached to a part of a garment worn by a user, such as a belt loop, or to an item supported by the user such as a purse loop or strap, or a strap of a backpack, a handle of a briefcase or a keychain. After use, the individual pill holding case is returned to its place in the pill case holding assembly, and refilled for the next use. While the present invention is illustrated and described with seven pill holding cases in the holder, one for each day of the week, a holder with a lesser or greater number of pill holding cases can be furnished within the scope of the present invention.
- Referring to
FIG. 1 , an embodiment of the present combination pill case holder and removable pill holding cases is generally designated by the numeral 10.Pill case holder 12 comprises a plurality ofapertures 14 extending through thethickness 16 ofholder 12. In the embodiment of the invention illustrated inFIGS. 1-5 ,holder 12 includes sevenapertures 14 corresponding to the number of days in the week. However, the number ofapertures 14 could vary, depending upon various desired uses of the present invention. In the illustrated embodiment ofFIGS. 1-5 , theapertures 14 are separated by a web ofmaterial 15 formed as a part of theholder 12. - Each
aperture 14 in the embodiment ofFIGS. 1-5 is configured to releasably and removably attach a correspondingpill holding case 18 toholder 12. Eachcase 18 comprises a circular slightly conicalouter surface 20 and a bottom surface 22 (FIG. 2 ), which surfaces define a hollow chamber (not shown) insidecasing 18. The chamber is adapted to store a quantity of pills or like items to be used during a given time period, such as one day, by a user. Eachcase 18 also includes alid 24 that is suitably hinged or otherwise moveable from a first position closing the chamber ofcase 20 to a second position providing user access to the pills or other items stored incase 18. In one embodiment, thelid 24 is pivotally attached toouter surface 20 ofcase 18 by a living hinge (not shown), and is held in the closed position by a snap lock betweenlid 24 andouter surface 20 ofcase 18. Other forms of closure for the chamber ofcase 18 are feasible, such as a lateral sliding opening and closing panel, and other opening and closure means as are known in the art. As shown inFIGS. 2 and 8 , each of thelids 24 of thepill holding cases 18 bear anindicia 25 indicating a different day of the week. These indicia can be embossed into theindividual lids 24 when eachcase 18 is molded, or the indicia can be printed or otherwise displayed on eachlid 24, as is known in the art. - Referring to
FIGS. 1 , 4 and 5, in the illustrated embodiment thelower portion 26 of eachaperture 14 inholder 12 includes a plurality of radially inwardly protrudingsemi-flexible ribs 28 that are formed with, or suitably attached toholder 12. Eachpill holding case 18 includes amating recess 30 extending aroundouter surface 20 of the pill case. When acase 18 is inserted into a correspondingaperture 14 as depicted by the arrow ‘A’ inFIG. 1 , pressure is applied tolid 24 untilribs 28 enter into and engagemating recess 30 of thecase 18. Upon engagement, ribs 28 andmating recess 30 form a snap fit releasably holding thecase 18 inholder 12. To remove apill holding case 18 fromholder 12, manual upward pressure is applied tobottom surface 22 of a selectedcase 18 while securingholder 12 with the other hand. The manual upward pressure causes a separation ofribs 28 frommating recess 30, enabling the user to remove the case from the holder without causinglid 24 to move, thus maintaining the chamber ofcase 18 in its closed position. - The present invention permits the
pill holding cases 18 to be opened for filling either while still lodged inaperture 14, or after the case has been removed fromholder 12. As seen inFIG. 3 , thelids 24 engage the top ofouter surface 20 of eachcase 18 above theupper surface 32 of eachaperture 14 ofholder 12. Also, once removed fromholder 12, eachpill case 18 may be individually filled by openinglid 24, and then closinglid 24 after filling, wherebylid 24 will engageouter surface 20 ofcase 18 with the snap lock described previously. - The present invention also provides a means for attaching each individual pill holding case to a garment worn by the user, or an item carried by or supported by the user. For this purpose, each pill holding case includes an
attachment tab 34 attached to or formed with theouter surface 20, which attachment tab extends radially outward fromsurface 20. In the illustrated embodiment, eachtab 34 includes anaperture 36 to be used to attach the pill holding case to a garment worn, or an item supported by a user. In the illustrated embodiment ofFIGS. 1-10 , the attachment tab has tapered side edge surfaces 38 that enable each case a certain degree of rotative movement when a plurality ofcases 18 are lodged side-by-side inapertures 14 ofholder 12, as will be described in more detail regarding the embodiments of the present invention illustrated inFIGS. 23 and 24 . - Another embodiment of the present invention is illustrated in
FIGS. 11 and 12 , wherein like elements as shown inFIGS. 1-10 are designated with the same numeral. In this embodiment, eachaperture wall 40 includes a pair of substantially opposedslots 42 extending through opposite sides of the thickness ofwall 40. A correspondingsemi-flexible locking member 44 is attached to or formed with theouter surface 20 of each pill holding case. Each lockingmember 44 is dimensioned to fit into acorresponding slot 42 to form a snap lock betweencase 18 andholder 12, as shown inFIG. 11 , and each locking member includes a taperedouter surface 46 as shown inFIG. 12 .Pill case holder 12 in this embodiment includes abottom wall surface 50 through whichaperture 48 extends for purposes to be explained. - Upon manual insertion of a
pill holding case 18 into anaperture 14 ofholder 12 in the embodiment ofFIGS. 11 and 12 (arrow B), the downward pressure oncase 18 causes taperedsurfaces 46 to advance downwardly alongwall 40 until each lockingmember 44 snaps into acorresponding slot 42 onaperture wall 40, thus removably attaching the pill holding case toholder 12. - To remove a
pill holding case 18 from a correspondingaperture 14 in the embodiments ofFIGS. 11 and 12 , upward manual pressure is applied to thebottom surface 22 ofpill case 18 throughaperture 48 in thebottom wall 50 of eachaperture 14. The upward pressure oncase 18forces locking members 44 to bear against the upper rims ofslots 42, causing the side walls ofholder 12 to flex outward, allowing lockingmembers 44 to pass out of theirrespective slots 42, thus releasingcase 18 fromholder 12. - A further embodiment of the present invention is illustrated in
FIGS. 13 and 14 , where like parts shown in the embodiment ofFIGS. 1-10 are identified with like numerals. InFIGS. 13 and 14 , a pair of snapping, semi-flexiblefront protrusions 52 are formed in or otherwise attached toupper surface 32 ofholder 12, in a spaced relation on one lateral side of eachaperture 14. Thefront protrusions 52 each have a shaped inwardly extending surface (not shown) to provide a releasable snap lock feature betweenholder 12 and each pill holding case, as will be explained. - On the
opposite wall 40 of eachaperture 14 atupper surface 32 is arear protrusion 54 that extends slightly radially inward, as seen inFIGS. 13 and 14 . A correspondingrecess 56 is located onsurface 20 of eachpill holding case 18 opposite attachment tab 34 (FIG. 14 ). - Each
pill holding case 18 is inserted into anaperture 14 using downwardly applied manual pressure withattachment tab 34 facing ninety degrees outward from the longitudinal axis ofholder 12. Ascase 18 reaches the downward end of its motion, the shaped inwardly extending surfaces (not shown) offront protuberances 52 flex and engage opposing sides oftab 34 as seen inFIGS. 13 and 14 , forming a snap lock to releasably hold one side ofcase 18 in its correspondingaperture 14. Simultaneously, rear protrusion 54 slides intorecess 56 on the other side ofsurface 20 ofcase 18, releasably holding the other side ofpill holding case 18 in correspondingaperture 14 by a snap lock, as viewed inFIG. 14 . - To manually release a
pill holding case 18 fromholder 12, finger pressure is upwardly applied toattachment tab 34, which causesfront protrusions 52 to flex andrelease tab 34 from their grip. Due to the inherent flexibility of thematerials holder 12 andcase 18 are made of,case 18 may pivot slightly about a horizontal axis inaperture 14, causingrear protrusion 54 to slide out ofrecess 56. Continued upward pressure applied tocase 18 will release the case fromholder 12. -
FIGS. 15 and 16 illustrate another embodiment of the present invention, where like elements shown in the embodiment ofFIGS. 1-10 have the same numerals. In this embodiment, pill case holder 58 has athickness 60 wherethickness 60, is substantially less thanthickness 16 ofholder 12 in the embodiment of the invention shown inFIGS. 1-10 . In the embodiment ofFIGS. 15 and 16 ,holder 58 comprises a plurality ofconnected rings 62, with each ring having a plurality ofsemi-flexible ribs 64 extending radially inward from the innervertical wall 66 of eachring 62, as seen inFIG. 15 . -
Pill holding case 18 includes a mating recess or groove 68 closely adjacent to upper surface 70 (FIG. 16 ) of the chamber formed incase 18. In the embodiment illustrated inFIG. 16 ,recess 68 extends around the circumference ofouter surface 20 ofcase 18, and as seen inFIG. 16 , has a double tapered surface forming thegroove 68.Groove 68 could also comprise other configurations to provide a snap lock withribs 64, as is known in the art. - As illustrated in
FIG. 16 , apill holding case 18 is inserted intopill case holder 58 by inserting the case downward into anaperture 14 as shown byarrow 67 until themating recess 68 engagesribs 64 asribs 64 slightly flex and enterrecess 68. At this point, case 18 is releasably held inaperture 14 of acorresponding ring 62. - To remove
case 18 from a correspondingring 62, upward finger pressure is applied tobottom surface 22 ofcase 18, forcingribs 64 to flex slightly and withdraw frommating recess 68. Continued upward movement ofcase 18 fully removes the case from engagement withring 62. - In the embodiment of
FIGS. 15 and 16 , the number ofrings 62 would be seven for storing a week's supply of pills in thevarious cases 18. However, it is contemplated that a three or fiveday holder 58 could be furnished to a user. Also, theholder 58 in this embodiment is significantly thinner than theholder 12 of the embodiment ofFIGS. 1-10 , thus providing a lighter holder with less manufacturing costs. Theholder 12 ofFIGS. 1-10 could also display advertising or branding on the side of the holder over thethickness 16, while theholder 58 of the embodiment ofFIGS. 15 and 16 does not have adequate lateral space to display advertising or branding. -
FIGS. 17A , B and 18 illustrate an embodiment of the present invention wherein eachpill holding case 18 includes mating and diametrically opposed protrudingflanges 72 attached to or formed withouter surface 20, andindented cavities 74 formed inouter surface 20. The bottom portion of eachflange 72 includes two opposed protrusions 76 (only one shown inFIG. 17A ), each adapted to engage with acorresponding recess 78 on aside wall 80 of eachcavity 74. Eachflange 72 is dimensioned to slide and snap into a snug fit with a correspondingcavity 74 to form a snap lock, as will be explained. Eachcase 18 also includesattachment tab 34 withaperture 36 as described in relation to the previous embodiments. - In the embodiment of
FIGS. 17A , B and 18, onepill case 18 is removably attached to another case by sliding protrudingflange 72 of one case into theindented cavity 74 of anothercase 18 untilprotrusions 76 engage acorresponding recess 78 as schematically shown inFIG. 18 by arrow C. The dimensions offlange 72 andcavity 74, as explained previously, are such that a snug but releasably snap lock between eachflange 72 and acorresponding cavity 74 is provided. As seen inFIG. 18 , any number of a plurality ofcases 18 may be linearly attached to form a multi-day container comprisingseveral cases 18. - To separate one
case 18 from another in the embodiment ofFIGS. 17A , B and 18, twoadjacent cases 18 are each grasped by the fingers of the user, and one case is pulled laterally upward relative to the other case.Protrusions 76 disengage fromrecesses 78, andflange 72 slides downward in its correspondingcavity 74 until thecases 18 are separated. The cases may then be re-assembled as described above. -
FIGS. 19A , B, 20, 21 and 22A, B, illustrate a further embodiment of the present invention, again with like numerals used to identify similar elements described in association with the previously described embodiments. In this embodiment, two adjacentpill holding cases 18 are removably attached using a button and aperture structure, as described below. Referring toFIGS. 19A and 19B , eachcase 18 includes oppositely extendingtabs case 18. Eachtab 80 includes at least one protrudingbutton 84 made of a semi-flexible material.Buttons 84 could extend upward or downward fromtabs 80. Eachbutton 84 includes a concave shapedstem 86, as best seen inFIGS. 22A and 22B . The tops 88 of eachbutton 84 could be flat, convex, or concave. - Each
tab 82 includes at least oneaperture 90, with twoapertures 90 shown in the illustrated embodiment.Tabs 82 are made of a semi-flexible material, so eachaperture 90 can stretch to fit overtop 88 of acorresponding button 84, as will be explained. Eachaperture 90 has a diameter slightly less than the diameter oftop 88 of eachbutton 84. - Referring to
FIGS. 22A and 22B , to removably fasten twoadjacent cases 18 together, the two cases are manually manipulated such that thebuttons 84 ontab 80 of one case are inserted intoapertures 90 of the second adjacent case, as schematically shown by arrows D inFIGS. 19A and 19B .Apertures 90 will stretch to accommodate the diameter oftop 88 of correspondingbutton 84.Apertures 90 then extend snugly around stem 86 of thecorresponding button 84, attaching onecase 18 to another by means of a snap lock. Any number ofcases 18 can be removably joined as desired by the user. - To remove one
case 18 from an adjacent case, the twocases 18 are each grasped by the user's fingers, and one case is moved vertically relative to the adjacent case.Apertures 90 stretch and allowtops 88 of eachbutton 84 to slide through and be detached from a correspondingaperture 90.Adjacent cases 18 can subsequently be re-attached as described above. - Further embodiments of the present invention are illustrated in
FIGS. 23 and 24 , where twist lock systems removably attachpill holding cases 18 topill case holder 12. As previously, like numerals identify similar elements described in prior embodiments. - In the embodiment of
FIG. 23 , the outer orexterior surfaces 20 of eachpill case 18 include substantially diametrically opposed lockingflanges 92 molded with or attached to theouter surfaces 20 ofcase 18. InFIG. 23 , only oneflange 92 is illustrated. Theupper surfaces 32 surrounding eachaperture 32 ofpill case holder 12 include substantially diametricallyopposed slots 94, with access to eachslot 94 provided by anopening 96 in theupper surface portion 32 adjacent eachslot 94. Eachopening 96 has a lateral width sufficient to allow lockingflange 92 of a corresponding pill holding case to move downwardly intoslot 94 when a pill holding case is inserted in a downward direction intoaperture 14. Each lockingflange 92 also has a vertical dimension to allow each lockingflange 92 to frictionally fit into acorresponding slot 94. - Upon insertion of a
pill holding case 18 into anaperture 14 ofpill case holder 12 in the embodiment ofFIG. 23 , as illustrated by arrow E, lockingflanges 92 on both sides ofcase 18enter corresponding openings 96. Thepill holding case 18 is then rotated counterclockwise as viewed inFIG. 23 , and both lockingflanges 92 are frictionally engaged by the upper and lower surfaces ofslots 94, as illustrated at 98 inFIG. 23 . Thecases 18 are frictionally held inholder 12 until the user desires to remove anindividual pill case 18 fromholder 12, at which time a givenpill holding case 18 is rotated clockwise, as viewed inFIG. 23 , whereby each lockingflange 92 overcomes the frictional holding force between the lockingflange 92 and theslot 94, and aligns with acorresponding opening 96. Thecase 18 can then be lifted vertically and out ofaperture 14. - In the embodiment of
FIG. 24 , the outer orexterior surfaces 20 of eachpill case 18 include substantially diametrically opposed lockingflanges 100 molded with or attached to theouter surfaces 20 ofcase 18. InFIG. 24 , only oneflange 100 is illustrated. Eachflange 100 includes a protuberance 102 extending radially outward from theflange 100. - The
upper surface 32 surrounding eachaperture 14 ofpill case holder 12 includes substantially diametrically opposed L-shapedchannels 104 molded into eachaperture wall 40. Adetent 106 is located in the vertically extendingside wall 108 of each L-shapedchannel 104. The lateral dimensions of each lockingflange 100 enable theflange 100 to move downwardly through theupper opening 110 in each L-shapedslot 104. Also, the vertical dimension of each lockingflange 100 allows the locking flange to be frictionally held between the upper andlower walls 112 of each L-shaped slot. - Upon insertion of a
pill holding case 18 into anaperture 14 ofpill case holder 12 in the embodiment ofFIG. 24 , as illustrated by arrow F, lockingflanges 100 on both sides ofcase 18 enter corresponding L-shapedchannels 104 until the bottom surface of each lockingflange 100 contactslower wall 112 ofchannel 104. Thecase 18 is then manually rotated counterclockwise, whereby each lockingflange 100 is frictionally engaged between upper andlower walls 112 of each corresponding L-shapedchannel 104, whereby protuberance 102 entersdetent 106 to lockcase 18 in its proper rotative position relative topill case holder 12. - To remove a
pill holding case 18 fromholder 12 in the embodiment ofFIG. 24 , a manual rotative force is applied in the clockwise direction, as viewed inFIG. 24 , to the case to be removed, whereby protuberances 102 are disengaged from correspondingdetents 106 and opposed lockingflanges 100 are positionedadjacent openings 110 inside wall 108. From this position, the pill case is lifted upward and away frompill case holder 12. The pill case can then be inserted into the pocket or purse of the user, or attached to a backpack strap or other item worn by or supported by the user. - The foregoing descriptions of the illustrated embodiments of the invention have been presented for purposes of illustration and description, and are not intended to be exhaustive or to limit the invention to the precise forms disclosed.
