- threading is provided on the interior surface of the eccentric member 20 proximate the connection end 24 for threaded connection to the threaded lower connector 23 of the power shaft assembly 36 .
- Threaded connection of eccentric member 20 and power shaft assembly 36 allows for eccentric member 20 to be removed and replaced with another eccentric member 20 of another size and weight to produce the desired oscillation and vibration. In an exemplary embodiment, the gap 49 is in the range of 0.508 cm to 0.635 cm (0.20′′ to 0.25′′) for a motor 10 having a nominal diameter in the range of 10.4775 cm to 12.065 cm (4.125′′ to 4.75′′). Generally, the gap 49 is effective in a range of ratios of gap 49 to nominal diameter of the control sleeve 12 (gap:sleeve diameter) as follows: 1:125 to 1:17. Depending on various application requirements, including the fluid used, nozzle size, pressure and other factors, ratios outside the foregoing range may be provided and even preferred.
- the upper subassembly 16 comprises a generally hollow cylindrical body 61 having a connecting assembly 82 for functional coupling to a drill string or tubing (not shown) at its upper end 80 .

Abstract
Description
- This application claims the benefit of U.S. provisional application Ser. No. 61/468,637 filed on Mar. 29, 2011, which is incorporated herein by reference as if reproduced in full below.
- Not Applicable.
- The disclosure relates, in general, to a downhole drilling apparatus. More specifically, the invention is directed to a downhole oscillator providing vibration or oscillation along at least a portion of the bottom hole assembly.
- Those in the oil and gas field attempt to reduce harmful vibrations that occur during drilling operations. However, in some cases, the providing of purposeful oscillation or vibration to a bottom hole assembly is desired as it will work to reduce friction and improve the string to bit weight transfer. High friction can lead to high well tortuosity thereby limiting step-out and possibly negatively affecting productivity. By providing purposeful oscillation or vibration one can reduce drag thereby improving weight transfer to the bit. Further, tool face control may be improved by minimizing static friction.
- This provision of oscillation or vibration may work to beneficially increase the penetration rate, extend drill bit life through the improved weight transfer and reduction of impact forces, and/or reducing the amount of drill pipe compression that would be required otherwise. Oscillation can be beneficial in any type of drilling operations, including, but not limited to, directional or horizontal drilling, and other applications such as fishing and milling.
- A downhole oscillator having an eccentric member is provided that creates oscillation of at least a part of the bottom hole assembly. An exemplary embodiment of the downhole oscillator includes an outer housing at least partially surrounding a motor and a functionally coupled eccentric member. The motor at least partially drives the rotation of the asymmetrical eccentric member thereby producing oscillations or vibrations along at least a portion of the downhole assembly. The motor's action is at least in part facilitated by expulsion of fluid from the drill string through the motor and onto the interior of the outer housing such that the force of the interaction between the motor and outer housing produces rotation in the motor. This rotation may be enhanced through expulsion of fluid from the eccentric member whereby the interaction of the expelled fluid therefrom interacts with the interior of the outer housing thereby providing rotation of the eccentric member. Different sized and weighted eccentric members may be utilized to produce the desired oscillating effect.
- Alternatively, the fluid may be expelled from the motor and/or the eccentric member against the interior of the wellbore thereby providing the desired rotation.
- A method of use may include providing an outer housing, a motor capable of producing rotational movement, and an asymmetrical eccentric member and functionally coupling same. Connecting the foregoing to a drill string. Activating the motor to produce vibration in at least a portion of the drill string.

FIGS. 1 and 2 , an exemplary embodiment of a downhole oscillator 5 is shown which generally comprises amotor 10, aneccentric member 20, and anouter housing 25. - As used herein, the term “upper” will refer to the direction of the
top sub 150 that connects to a drill string or tubing (not shown). As used herein, the term “lower” will refer to the direction of thelower sub 100. However, it will be understood that these terms are simply for ease of reference and have no bearing on the actual use of the invention. - A cylindrical, elongated
outer housing 25 at least partially surrounds themotor 10. Theouter housing 25 may be used to connect themotor 10, and its functionally coupledeccentric member 20, to a drill string (not shown). Theouter housing 25 may also at least partially surround theeccentric member 20. - The
outer housing 25 is functionally connectable at itsstring connection end 190 to a drill string, though the connection may not be direct. For example, in the exemplary embodiment shown, theouter housing 25 is connected to atop sub 150 at itsstring connection end 190. Thetop sub 150 may then be functionally coupled to the drill string or tubing and a fluid source (not shown). - In the exemplary embodiment shown, the
top sub 150 is generally cylindrical with afluid passage 198 extending therethrough.Fluid passage 198 is generally aligned with axis A-A. Thetop sub 150 has an upper drillstring connection end 188, a lowermotor connection end 194, and a lowerhousing connection end 196. The connection ends 188, 194, 196 may employ any known or later discovered method of connection, including, but not limited to, threaded connections. Thetop sub 150 contains at least onedump port 155 proximate the downhole oscillator 5. Thedump ports 155 may be disposed intermediate the lowermotor connection end 194 and the lower housing connection end 196 of thetop sub 150. Thedump ports 155 are in fluid communication with thefluid passage 198 of thetop sub 150, and thereby are in fluid communication with the fluid source. - Referring to
FIG. 3 ,top sub 150 connects tojet motor 10 via lowermotor connection end 194.Jet motor 10 is rotably disposed withinouter housing 25. Theouter housing 25 connects to thetop sub 150 at itsconnection end 190. When connected, at least a portion, if not all, of thedump ports 155 are disposed within thehousing 25. Further, at least a portion, if not all, of themotor 10 is disposed within thehousing 25. Themotor 10 is functionally coupled to thetop sub 150 thereby allowing at least some of the fluid, which may be pressurized as needed, to flow from thetop sub 150 and into themotor 10. - In operation, fluid, having a desired pressure, is pumped to the downhole oscillator 5. When the lower
motor connection end 194 of thetop sub 150 is functionally connected to themotor 10, some of the fluid that will pass through thefluid passage 198 of thetop sub 150 will enter into themotor 10 therefrom. This fluid will power themotor 10 thereby producing the oscillations or vibrations. A housing annulus 200 is defined as the space between theinterior surface 202 of thehousing 25 and theexterior surface 204 of themotor 10 when thehousing 25 andmotor 10 are functionally coupled. At least some of the fluid will flow into the housing annulus 200 through thedump ports 155, thereby bypassing the interior of themotor 10 on its way towards the bottom hole assembly. - The
outer housing 25 is functionally connectable, either directly or indirectly, at itslower connection end 195 to a drill bit, bottom hole assembly, or other downhole component. This connection may be facilitated through the use of alower sub 100 to connect the downhole oscillator 5 to the desired downhole component (not shown). Through direct connection of theouter housing 25 to the bottom hole assembly, and/or other downhole component, with or without the use of alower sub 100, theeccentric member 20 may be functionally coupled to the drill string while being allowed freedom of movement in order to effect the desired oscillation or vibration of same. - Referring to
FIG. 4 ,outer housing 25lower connection end 195 may be connected directly tolower sub 100. - Referring to
FIG. 5 , theeccentric member 20 of the exemplary embodiment is a generally asymmetrical member with aclosed end 18 and anopen connection end 24. Theeccentric member 20 is asymmetrical in that at least a portion of theeccentric member 20 has alarger surface area 180 than another portion of theeccentric member 20 resulting in greater weight along thelarger portion 180 of themember 20 in relation to the remainingportion 181. Theeccentric member 20 of the depicted exemplary embodiment is generally cylindrical; however, any shaped eccentric member may be used wherein the shape and size of theeccentric member 20 varies from that shown in the exemplary embodiment herein so long as same fulfills the purpose of providing a member with uneven weight distribution in order to produce vibration and/or oscillation in the downhole tool while in operation. - In an alternative embodiment shown in
FIGS. 5 , 5A, and 6, theenlarged portion 180 of theeccentric member 20 further contains aprotrusion 182 extending therefrom. Theprotrusion 182 aids to add more weight to theenlarged portion 180 in order to further offset theeccentric member 20. Additional or varying sized and/orweighted members eccentric members 20 may be changed out or reconfigured in order to produce the desired result. In an alternative embodiment, theprotrusion 182 is weighted as needed to produce the desired oscillation/vibration. Further, multipleeccentric members 20 having varyingprotrusion 182 andenlarged surface area 180 sizes and weights may be provided. - Referring to
FIGS. 5 and 7 , achannel 22 extends inwardly of theeccentric member 20 from itsconnection end 24. In an exemplary embodiment, threading is provided on the interior surface of theeccentric member 20 proximate theconnection end 24 for threaded connection to the threadedlower connector 23 of thepower shaft assembly 36. Threaded connection ofeccentric member 20 andpower shaft assembly 36 allows foreccentric member 20 to be removed and replaced with anothereccentric member 20 of another size and weight to produce the desired oscillation and vibration. While a threaded connection is show, it is understood that any type of functional coupling may be employed to affect the stated purpose. - In the exemplary embodiment shown in
FIGS. 5 , 5B, and 6, one ormore rotation nozzles 26 are disposed in thecylinder wall 27 of theeccentric member 20. In an exemplary embodiment depicted inFIGS. 9A and 9B , at least tworotation nozzles 26 are provided.Rotation nozzles 26 are in fluid communication with theinterior channel 22 of theeccentric member 20 which in turn is in fluid communication with the fluid source. The rotation nozzles 26 extend from theinterior channel 22 out to the exterior surface 184 of theeccentric member 20. This coupling allows fluid to flow from thechannel 22 to the exterior of theeccentric member 20. In the exemplary embodiment shown, fluid enters thechannel 22 of theeccentric member 20 from the interior of themotor 10, which in turn enters themotor 10 from the drill string. - Referring to
FIG. 9A , an exemplary embodiment of thenozzles 26 of theeccentric member 20 each have an axis N extending therethrough. Axis N extends radially with respect to the longitudinally extending axis AA, as shown inFIGS. 5 and 7 , to allow radial fluid expulsion from thenozzle 26. This fluid expulsion from thenozzles 26 may strike theinterior 202 of theouter housing 25 thereby providing rotational thrust in a desired direction. - Alternatively, at least one
rotation nozzle 26 may extend radially in an oblique or aslant manner, axis N′, thereby expelling fluid, when in operation, at an angle against a surface that is proximate thereto. The angling of therotation nozzle 26, and the interaction of the expelled fluid therefrom with a proximate surface thereto, will generate rotation of theeccentric member 20. Examples of surfaces that are proximate therotation nozzle 26 are theinterior surface 202 of thehousing 25, theinterior surface 34 of thecontrol sleeve 12, and the interior of the wellbore (not shown). - Described another way, the radially extending angle N′ of the
rotation nozzles 26 may be angled with respect to a plane passing parallel to and along the longitudinal axis AA at theinterior opening 29, at thecylinder wall 27, of thenozzle 26. Wherein the angle N′ is acute in relation to the plane. In an exemplary embodiment, the plane intersects the nozzle axis N at theinterior opening 29. - Referring to
FIG. 9B , in an alternative embodiment, one ormore rotation nozzles 26 may extend with their axis N oriented, at least partially, back toward the connectingend 24 of theeccentric member 20. - Described another way, one or
more rotation nozzles 26 may extend angularly with respect to a plane passing perpendicular to the longitudinal extension of axis AA. In other words, the angle N of thenozzles 26 may extend along the axis AA wherein the angle is acute in the direction of the eccentric member's 20 connectingend 24 and obtuse with respect to the direction of itsclosed end 18. Alternatively, thenozzles 26 may be oriented in the reverse, wherein the angle N is acute in the direction of theclosed end 18 of theeccentric member 20 and obtuse with respect to its open connectingend 24. - Referring to
FIGS. 6A and 6B , in an alternative embodiment, theeccentric member 20 does not haverotation nozzles 26 nor achannel 22 and the rotation of theeccentric member 20 is driven solely by themotor 10. In this embodiment, the connectingend 24 simply connects theeccentric member 20 to themotor 10 in order to provide the necessary rotation. - A
motor 10 is provided for functional coupling with theeccentric member 20. Themotor 10 serves as a conduit for the pressurized fluid to therotation nozzles 26 of theeccentric member 20 when theeccentric member 20 is the force pushing the rotation of themember 20. Themotor 10 may also serve as the sole or additional driving force of theeccentric member 20. - Referring to
FIG. 5 , the exterior of the depicted exemplary embodiment of themotor 10 generally comprises acontrol sleeve 12 andupper subassembly 16 having a common central longitudinal axis AA. - Referring to
FIGS. 5 and 7 , thecontrol sleeve 12 is generally composed of an elongated cylindrical barrel body, with acontrol sleeve channel 17 passing therethrough. Thecontrol sleeve channel 17 is oriented along axis AA. Thecontrol sleeve 12 is provided with a connectingassembly 19 at itsupper end 32 for functional connection to thelower end 42 of theupper subassembly 16. This functional connection may be a threaded connection as shown or any other known or later discovered attachment method. Theupper subassembly 16 is provided with a connectingassembly 82 at itsend 80 to allow connection to a drill string or tubing (not shown), directly or indirectly. As shown inFIG. 7 , in an exemplary embodiment,upper subassembly 16 is connected totop sub 150 lowermotor connection end 194. Threaded connections, as depicted, are commonly practiced. Accordingly, thecontrol sleeve 12, after installation on a drill string or tubing, is in a fixed position in relation to the drill string or tubing. - The
power shaft assembly 36 includes thepower shaft 30, a lowerradial bearing 46, athrust bushing 48, an upperradial bearing 44, aretainer 38 and anupper thrust bushing 70. - The
power shaft 30 comprises a hollow cylindrical structure having aninternal channel 66 aligned with axis AA. Theinternal channel 66 allows fluid communication from a drill string or tube (not shown) to thechannel 22 of theeccentric member 20. - The
power shaft 30 is constructed and sized to rotate within thecontrol sleeve 12 with the lowerradial bearing 46 and upperradial bearing 44 providing radial support. As theeccentric member 20 is fixedly attached to thepower shaft 30, thepower shaft 30 at least partially drives the rotation of theeccentric member 20 thereby causing rotation of thepower shaft 30 and theeccentric member 20 together in relation to thecontrol sleeve 12 and theouter housing 25. In an alternative embodiment,eccentric member 20 contains at least onerotation nozzle 26, thereby providing at least a portion of the driving power. Thepower shaft 30 is at least partially surrounded by thecontrol sleeve 12. - The
thrust bushing 48 extends intermediate the lowerradial bearing 46 and the upperradial bearing 44. - A
retainer nut 38 is provided on thepower shaft 30 intermediate the upperradial bearing 44 and theupper end 60 of thepower shaft 30. Theretainer nut 38 is provided with aninternal connection assembly 39 to functionally attach theretainer 38 to thecorresponding connection assembly 81 provided on thepower shaft 30. A purpose of the functionally connection between theretainer 38 and thepower shaft 30 is to retain theradial bearings thrust bushing 48 intermediate theretainer nut 38 and ashoulder 69 on thepower shaft 30 and ashoulder 68 on thecontrol sleeve 12, as seen inFIGS. 10 and 11 . - The
power shaft 30,control sleeve 12,shoulder 68 of thecontrol sleeve 12, and theend 56 of the lowerradial bearing 46 define a blindannular space 55. The blindannular space 55 is intermediate theexterior surface 33 of thepower shaft 30 and theinner surface 34 of thecontrol sleeve 12. The blindannular space 55 having anupper end 45 defined by theend 56 of the lowerradial bearing 46 and theshoulder 68 of thecontrol sleeve 12. Anannular opening 54 of theannular space 55 is defined intermediate thecontrol sleeve 12 and thepower shaft 30. - In an alternative embodiment, an annular seal (not shown) may be provided at the
end 56 of the lowerradial bearing 46 to define theupper end 45 of theannular space 55. - At least one
drive nozzle 52 extends through thewall 31 of thepower shaft 30. In an exemplary embodiment, at least twodrive nozzles 52 are provided and are radially spaced within thewall 31 of thepower shaft 30. The drive nozzles 52 are in fluid communication with theinternal channel 66 of thepower shaft 30. - The drive nozzles 52 are located intermediate the
annular opening 54 of theannular space 55 and theupper end 45 of theannular space 55. The drive nozzles 52 allow fluid to flow from theinternal channel 66 of thepower shaft 30 to theannular space 55. - The drive nozzles 52 each have an axis D therethrough, as seen in
FIGS. 8A and 8B . Referring toFIG. 8B , axis D of thedrive nozzle 52 is angled radially to allow fluid expulsion from thenozzles 52. This fluid expulsion acting on the interior of theouter housing 25, or other area proximate thenozzle 52, provides rotational thrust in a desired direction. In addition, the radially extending angle D′ of thedrive nozzle 52 may be angled obliquely or aslantingly thereby expelling the fluid therefrom, in operation, at an angle further encouraging rotation of thepower shaft 30 and in turn rotating theeccentric member 20. - Stated another way, the radially extending angle D′ of the
drive nozzle 52 may be angled with respect to a plane P passing parallel to and along the longitudinal axis AA at theinterior opening 57. The radial angle D′ of the drive nozzle's 52 axis D in relation to the plane P is acute. In an exemplary embodiment, the plane P intersects axis D at theinterior opening 57. - In an alternative embodiment, axis D may extend backward toward the
upper subassembly 16 of themotor 10. Stated differently, axis D may be oriented angularly with respect to axis AA, as depicted inFIG. 8A , wherein the angle is acute in the direction of the power shaft's 30upper end 60 and obtuse with respect to the direction of its threadedlower connector 23. Accordingly, thedrive nozzles 52 are oriented rearward in relation to thepower shaft 30. - In the exemplary embodiments shown, the
rotation nozzles 26 and drivenozzles 52 are depicted. In an alternative embodiment, not shown, ports, or openings, may be provided without nozzles to achieve the desired result. The principles taught in this disclosure apply with ports and/or openings used in lieu ofrotation nozzles 26 and/or drivenozzles 52. - Referring to
FIG. 7A , in an alternative embodiment,power shaft 30 is not equipped withdrive nozzles 52. In this embodiment,rotation nozzle 26 of theeccentric member 20 drivesjet motor 10. - Referring to
FIG. 10 , theinner surface 34 of thecontrol sleeve 12 is spaced from theexterior surface 33 of thepower shaft 30. The resultant space therebetween definesgap 49. In operation, fluid is forced through theinternal channel 66 and is expelled through at least onedrive nozzle 52. Upon said expulsion the fluid impacts theinner surface 34. The radial angle D′ of thedrive nozzles 52 force the fluid to exit thenozzles 52 at a radial angle thereby providing, and/or enhancing the, rotational force when the fluid impacts theinner surface 34 resulting in the rotation of thepower shaft 30 and, through functional coupling, the rotation of theeccentric member 20. - In an exemplary embodiment, the
gap 49 is in the range of 0.0381 cm to 0.0762 cm (0.015″ to 0.030″) for amotor 10 having a nominal diameter in the range of 3.175 cm to 4.445 cm (1.25″ to 1.75″). In an exemplary embodiment, thegap 49 is in the range of 0.508 cm to 0.635 cm (0.20″ to 0.25″) for amotor 10 having a nominal diameter in the range of 10.4775 cm to 12.065 cm (4.125″ to 4.75″). Generally, thegap 49 is effective in a range of ratios ofgap 49 to nominal diameter of the control sleeve 12 (gap:sleeve diameter) as follows: 1:125 to 1:17. Depending on various application requirements, including the fluid used, nozzle size, pressure and other factors, ratios outside the foregoing range may be provided and even preferred. - Referring to
FIGS. 7 and 10 , theupper subassembly 16 comprises a generally hollowcylindrical body 61 having a connectingassembly 82 for functional coupling to a drill string or tubing (not shown) at itsupper end 80. In an exemplary embodiment, connectingassembly 82 ofupper subassembly 16 functionally couples with lower housing connection end 196 oftop sub 150. Further, theupper subassembly 16 has a connectingassembly 83 at itslower end 42 for connecting thesubassembly 16 to themotor 10 via itscontrol sleeve 12 at the control sleeve's connectingassembly 19. Theupper subassembly 16 includes aninterior channel 72 that is aligned withtop sub 150fluid passage 198 and axis AA. - An
injection tube 96 is provided inupper subassembly 16. Theinjection tube 96 includes anelongated tube 40 and atube head 41. Thetube head 41 has a larger diameter than thetube 40. Atube retaining nut 86 is provided to retain thetube head 41 between the retainingnut 86 and ashoulder 87 provided inupper subassembly 16. The retainingnut 86,tube head 41 andtube 40 define acontinuous tube channel 95 aligned with axis AA. The retainingnut 86 has a connectingassembly 84 for functional connection to connectingassembly 83 provided inupper subassembly 16. - In an exemplary embodiment, the
injection tube 96 is retained in position by the retainingnut 86 and theshoulder 87 ofupper subassembly 16. Theinjection tube 96 is free to rotate about axis AA independent of the rotation of thepower shaft 30 andupper subassembly 16. - The
upper subassembly 16 is provided with acylindrical inset 88 at itslower end 62. Athrust bushing 70 is at least partially disposed within thecylindrical inset 88 and provides a bearing surface intermediate theupper subassembly 16 andpower shaft assembly 36. Thethrust bushing 70 additionally encloses and provides radial support for thetube 40. - In an exemplary embodiment, the
tube 40 extends past thelower end 62 of theupper subassembly 16 and into thechannel 66 of thepower shaft 30. - The
interior surface 71 of thethrust bushing 70 is sized and constructed to encircle theexterior surface 43 of thetube 40 but to allow rotation between the surfaces. Thethrust bushing 70 further contains aflange 74 extending radially outward from the center of thebushing 70. Theflange 74 is received between thelower end 62 of theupper subassembly 16 and theupper end 60 of thepower shaft 30. Thethrust bushing 70 includes acylindrical inset 78 to receive a segment of thepower shaft 30 at theupper end 60 of thepower shaft 30. Thecylindrical inset 78 may be sized and constructed to slideably receiveend 60 ofpower shaft 30. - The diameter of the
outer surface 43 of thetube 40 is preferably only slightly smaller than the diameter of the power shaft'schannel 66 thereby allowing thetube 40 to be slideably received in thechannel 66. - In an exemplary embodiment, the
injection tube 96 is at least partially composed of atube wall 90 having a width and design such that thewall 90 will expand slightly when an appropriate operating pressure is moved through thetube channel 95, interior to thewall 90. Such slight expansion may create a seal between theexterior surface 43 of thetube wall 90 and theinterior surface 93 of thepower shaft 30, wherein saidinterior surface 93 defineschannel 66. - In an exemplary embodiment, the
tube wall 90 is provided with a slight flare proximate itslower end 64 to enhance sealing of thetube wall 90 against theinterior surface 93. A preferred flare angle is up to five degrees outwardly from thetube wall 90 segment that is not flared. - In summary, the
power shaft assembly 36 is fixedly attached to theeccentric member 20. Thepower shaft assembly 36 is rotatable within thecontrol sleeve 12. A blindannular space 55 is defined between thepower shaft 30 and thecontrol sleeve 12 for at least partial fluid expulsion. - In an alternative embodiment, the motor does not have the
control sleeve 12. In this embodiment, the fluid is expelled from thedrive nozzles 52 directly against theinterior surface 202 of thehousing 25. Alternatively, the fluid may be expelled from thedrive nozzles 52 directly against the interior surface of the wellbore. - A purpose of the
motor 10 is to provide a conduit for the fluid to enter the eccentric member thereby allowing rotation thereof through expulsion of fluid therethrough. A purpose of themotor 10 is to provide rotation, either alone or in addition to any rotative force produced by theeccentric member 20, to theeccentric member 20 to create the desired vibration and/or oscillations in the bottom hole assembly. - In operation, the downhole oscillator 5 is formed whereby the
motor 10 is functionally coupled to theeccentric member 20. Themotor 10 and theeccentric member 20 may be disposed, at least partially, within theouter housing 25. The oscillator 5 is functionally coupled to a drill string or tube by way of thetop sub 150. A fluid (not shown), which may be drilling fluid or a gas, is introduced into the drill string or tube at a determined pressure. Pressure is applied to the fluid forcing the fluid through thechannels drive nozzles 52 and, if present, therotation nozzles 26 and is expelled against at least a portion of theouter housing 25 orcontrol sleeve 12. If no nozzles are utilized fluid will be expelled through the openings in thepower shaft 30wall 31 and, if present, the openings in thecylinder wall 27 of theeccentric member 20. The pressure from the fluid in thechannels rotation nozzles 26 and/or thedrive nozzles 52, or openings if nozzles are not utilized, create rotational torque on theeccentric member 20 and thepower shaft 30. - The proximity of the
inner surface 34 of thecontrol sleeve 12 orouter housing 25 provides a surface that is stationary relative to thepower shaft 30. The expansive force of the fluid escaping thedrive nozzles 52 and/orrotation nozzles 26 and impinging thesurface 34 ofcontrol sleeve 12 may enhance the rotational torque on thepower shaft 30. - The
gap 49 may be determined to provide desired reactive force of fluid expelled through thedrive nozzles 52 at theinner surface 34. In addition, the force of the drilling fluid may be manipulated in order to control the thrust of the drilling fluid through thedrive nozzles 52 androtation nozzles 26, if present, against thecontrol sleeve 12inner surface 34 and/or the interior surface of theouter housing 25 thereby controlling the rotation of thepower shaft 30 and theeccentric member 20. - As the
drive nozzles 52 may be located intermediate theopening 54 of theannular space 55 and theupper end 45, fluid forced out ofdrive nozzles 52 may be forced out of theopening 54, thereby continually washing theannular spaces 55, 200 and preventing accumulation of debris therein. -
FIG. 11 depicts an alternative exemplary embodiment wherein fourdrive nozzles 52 are located on thepower shaft 30 in order to increase the amount of fluid expelled through thedrive nozzles 52. The drive nozzles 52 are depicted as symmetrically situated opposing pairs with respect to each other. However, thedrive nozzles 52 may also be situated asymmetrically or in any combination of the two. - In an exemplary embodiment, an appropriate gas, such as nitrogen, may be utilized as the fluid medium. The construction of the present invention, particularly the construction of the
injection tube wall 90 with expansion capability upon application of appropriate fluid pressure in thetube channel 95 together with the fit ofexterior surface 43 of thetube wall 90 and theinterior surface 93 of thepower shaft 30 may allow the creation of an effective seal even though the fluid is a gas. - The exemplary embodiment providing a flared
lower end 64 of thetube wall 90 provides an effective seal at theinterior surface 93 as internal fluid pressure is applied at the open end of thelower end 64 of thetube wall 90. - A method of use includes providing a downhole oscillator 5. The downhole oscillator 5 may comprise providing a
motor 10, which may be capable of producing rotational movement, and/or one or moreeccentric members 20, wherein some may be capable of producing rotational movement and wherein same may be of varying sizes and weights. This step may further include providing anouter housing 25 at least partially surrounding themotor 10 andeccentric member 10. In the exemplary embodiments shown, theouter housing 25 fully encloses themotor 10 andeccentric member 20 and connects to atop sub 150 and alower sub 100 thereby remaining stationary in relation to the eccentric member and/or at least a portion of themotor 10. Further, themotor 10 may contain apower shaft 30 having at least one opening or drivenozzle 52 in theshaft wall 31. - Selecting an appropriate
eccentric member 20 to provide the desired or requested oscillations and/or vibrations. This step may require selecting differenteccentric members 20 depending on changing conditions downhole or changing requirements. - Manipulating the
eccentric member 20 by adding or removing varying sizes, types, or shapedprotrusions 182 to manipulate the weight and/or size of theeccentric member 20 as desired. The manipulating step may also include the utilization of different materials on the eccentric member, such as the use of cobalt for theprotrusion 182 or steel or iron or some other material. - Functionally coupling the
motor 10 to aneccentric member 20. The coupling step may include coupling themotor 10 via itspower shaft 30 to the selectedeccentric member 20. This coupling may be removable. Functionally coupling theeccentric member 20 to a drill string to produce the desired or requested oscillations (whereby when used in this specification the terms oscillations and vibrations are interchangeable). - Assembling the downhole oscillator 5 whereby desired.
- Connecting the downhole oscillator 5 to the drill string, either directly or indirectly.
- Lowering the
eccentric member 20 and/or downhole oscillator 5 downhole. Introducing fluid to the drill string thereby powering theeccentric member 20. Running the downhole oscillator 5 to produce oscillations to the bottom hole assembly. - Removing the downhole oscillator 5 from the wellbore. Switching out the eccentric member for another or otherwise manipulating the eccentric member 5 such that a different hertz will be produced once it is lowered back into the wellbore and operated.
- A method of use may also include introducing a fluid or gas, collectively referred to as a fluid, under pressure to the downhole oscillator 5. At least a portion of the fluid being introduced, under pressure, to the interior of the
motor 10. This fluid being used to power themotor 10 through thedrive nozzles 52, power theeccentric member 20 through therotation nozzles 26, and/or both. The fluid may travel through thedump ports 155 of thetop sub 155 and travel along theinterior 202 of thehousing 25 thereby bypassing themotor 10 and theeccentric member 20 and proceeding downhole for use further down the string. The fluid that is used to power themotor 10 and/or theeccentric member 20 escapes the downhole oscillator 5 and will travel down the string to be used elsewhere. - Alternatively, a method of use may include further providing a
power shaft 30, thepower shaft 30 having anupper end 80 and alower end 81 and is functionally attached to aneccentric member 20 at thelower end 23. Theeccentric member 20 having acylinder wall 27 and a longitudinal axis AA, with at least one eccentricmember rotation nozzle 26, having an opening axis N and aninterior opening 29, in thecylinder wall 27. A method of use may also include an introducing step comprising introducing a fluid or gas under pressure to therotatable power shaft 30 such that the fluid or gas is forced through the at least onerotation nozzle 26. - Additionally, a method of use may include a combination of the two aforementioned methods, wherein a providing step comprises providing a
power shaft 30 with at least onedrive nozzle 52 and aneccentric member 10 with at least onerotation nozzle 26. Method of use may also include an introducing step comprising introducing a fluid or gas under pressure to therotatable power shaft 30 such that the fluid or gas is forced through the at least onedrive nozzle 52 and the at least onerotation nozzle 26. - In the aforementioned methods, the fluid may be a gas. The gas may be nitrogen.
- The downhole oscillator 5 may provide vibrations of twenty-four to thirty-five Hz within the outer diameter of at least a portion of the bottom hole assembly; though other frequencies may be produced as desired. This degree of frequency may reduce the friction of the bottom hole assembly thereby improving the string to bit weight transfer when used with coiled tubing. Further, by providing vibrations to the bottom hole assembly, the rate of penetration may be improved.
- The downhole oscillator 5 may allow up to one hundred twenty gallons of fluid per minute to flow therethrough.
- The downhole oscillator 5 may be used with coiled tubing.
- The depicted exemplary embodiments may be altered in a number of ways while retaining the inventive aspect, including ways not specifically disclosed herein.
- Throughout the description and claims of this specification, the words “comprise” and “contain” and variations of the words, for example “comprising” and “comprises”, means “including but not limited to”, and is not intended to (and does not) exclude other moieties, additives, components, integers or steps.
- Throughout the description and claims of this specification, the singular encompasses the plural unless the context otherwise requires. In particular, where the indefinite article is used, the specification is to be understood as contemplating plurality as well as singularity, unless the context requires otherwise.
- Features and characteristics described in conjunction with a particular aspect, embodiment or example of the invention are to be understood to be applicable to any other aspect, embodiment or example described herein unless incompatible therewith.
