Abstract
A play construction kit includes modules, connector parts and a storage box. The modules may be sized so that a child or adult requires two hands to move a module while in another embodiment, the modules may be sized so a small child can play with the modules at a desk or somewhere inside a room. The modules are either primary modules or secondary modules. Primary modules have at least one full aperture or at least one half-aperture. The primary modules have an aperture diameter that ranges in size but is sufficient to allow the connector part to pass through. The connector part may fit in any aperture diameter with or without friction. Secondary modules serve to support or work with said primary modules or connector parts.
Description
- The present application is a continuation-in-part of U.S. patent application Ser. No. 12/370,940, filed Feb. 13, 2009, entitled “PLAY CONSTRUCTION KIT,” which claims the benefit of U.S. Provisional Patent Application Ser. No. 61/029,759, filed Feb. 19, 2008 also entitled “PLAY CONSTRUCTION KIT,” the contents of each are hereby incorporated by reference as if set fully herein.
- The present invention relates to children's play construction kits. In particular, the present invention relates to play kits having loose connectible and/or interchangeable parts.
- The concept of free play is one where children play in a manner that allows them to imagine and invent how they play, thereby enabling healthy childhood development. Free play is innate in children as their imaginations are limitless. Children express their imaginations through play either on a playground or at home using playthings. Play is a key childhood activity in which children can let their imaginations go. Traditionally play on playgrounds involved children using design-directed equipment, including slides, seesaws, monkey bars, etc., whose rigidly defined, or “prestructured,” forms and functions limit children's possibilities for play and as such stifle children's imaginations. Today's playgrounds have merged individual equipment into a large playground combination device affixed with slides, monkey bars, climbing areas, bridges, tunnels, etc. These playgrounds are no better than traditional playgrounds of the past, as they still utilize old pre-structured, prescribed equipment that have limited function. Few of the playgrounds to date allow children to express their full creative potential or play freely.
- Children's imaginations are also stifled by the current state of toys. Toys such as building sets have been touted to allow a child to be creative, however these sets only constrain a child's imagination. Exemplary toy building sets include TinkerToys, Erector and LEGO® sets, which all heavily curtail play as they are pre-structured toys. A child uses these sets to construct objects of limited scope. Also, these sets use small, inflexible parts with prescribed functions that are limited for use by children of certain ages. To further limit imagination, many of these sets include collective sets that make only one object.
- The current way of playing using pre-structured equipment and toys contributes to today's problems with childhood obesity and also to poor social skills, motor skills and school performance in children. Since much of a child's life is structured, playgrounds and play things should not be. Children have a natural tendency to play, which done freely, advances proper childhood development. Parents, educators and childhood development experts today are advocating free play to counterbalance today's structured world. Children that play freely develop better socially, physically and intellectually. These skills translate into better performance in school and ultimately results in better-performing adults.

For instance, one can use the modules and/or connector parts to construct forts, castles, animals, objects such as barbells, or a plethora of undefined structures or objects, etc. The connector parts may fit in a full -aperture or half aperture of said primary module with or without friction. The modules are housed in a storage box comprising three-open faced storage cabinets; a center open-faced storage cabinet flanked by two open-faced storage cabinet doors.

FIGS. 1B-2D , 8, 9, and 10 show an environmental view of aplay construction kit 10 includingstorage box 100 according to the present invention. Thekit 10 comprises thestorage box 100,modules FIGS. 1A , 1B and 8 show thekit 10 andstorage box 100 in a large-scale embodiment, however, it should be noted that thekit 10 andstorage box 100 need not be limited in size and may be manufactured in a small-scale embodiment. -
FIGS. 2A-2D show another embodiment ofbox 100 which can be used to hold, organize and store themodules storage box 100 comprises three-open faced storage cabinets; a center open-faced storage cabinet 106 connected to and flanked by two open-facedstorage cabinet doors Connectors 112, such as and not limited to hinges, may be used to attach eachdoor body 106 and handles 108 may be disposed on thedoors doors body 106 have dimension and depth sufficient to retain themodules Shelves 114 and bars ordividers 116 may be disposed within each thedoors body 106 to organize and store the modules and connectors. Thebox 100 may be made to have a combination of shelves and dividers or , as shown inFIG. 1B , may be constructed only havingshelves 114. - Each the
doors body 106 has two side walls connected by a top piece, a bottom piece and a back wall forming the three independent open-faced, cabinet-like storage closets. Theconnectors 112 are disposed on front edges of the two side walls of the independent open-faced, cabinet-likestorage closet body 106 and on exterior, corner back edge of each the independent open-faced, cabinet-likestorage closet doors body 106 meet a side edge on back walls of eachdoor connectors 112 may be two-part connectors such as mating hinges, wherein one connector piece is disposed on thebody 106 and it's mate is disposed on thedoor connectors 112 androllers 110 permit thedoors FIGS. 2A and 2B . - The
connectors 112 permit thedoors body 106. In a closed position, each side wall of thedoors body 106 on thebox 100 abut and seal closed the open-faced cabinet of thebody 106 defining a rear concealed compartment R. Specifically, an exterior of a side wall on thefirst door 102 closest tobody 106 conceals half the open-faced cabinet of thebody 106 and an exterior of a side wall on thesecond door 104 closest tobody 106 conceals a remaining half of the open face of thebody 106. SeeFIG. 2B . Also in this closed position, the open-faces of each thedoor doors body 106 ordoors box 100 retains items within thebody 106 separate from the items held in thefirst door 102 andsecond door 104. Thebox 100 of the present invention is unlike the prior art storage devices where open faces of each cabinet face each other, see for instance Schoenfield (4,054,191), McLean (244,818) and Ellison (2,115,947). - The
box 100 may be made of any material such as metal, wood, plastics, etc. The bottom pieces and anyshelves 114 of each thedoors body 106 may be vented or be made to have a latticed design to drain water that could be found onwet modules Rollers 110 may be disposed at the bottom of thebox 100 to facilitate opening and closing thedoors box 100 to various locations.FIGS. 2A-2D show thebox 100 designed to hold large-scale modules - Referring now to
FIG. 3 modules primary modules Module 350 has both full and half apertures. - The full-aperture
primary modules 200 include a rectangle block withholes 260, a long block withholes 270, a square block withholes 280, acheese 240, awheel 230, aclover gear 210, aplus gear 220 and ahinge 250. The half-aperture primary modules include anarch block 310, anarch chute 330, achannel straight 320, achannel bend 340 and achute 350.Chute 350 also fits under the category of full-apertureprimary modules 200 as it has afull aperture 32. - The
primary modules full aperture aperture full aperture aperture 34 may have an aperture diameter that is less than about 10 inches and ranges in size from 1 inch to 8 inches being either a small aperture or a large aperture. Generally, the diameter ofsmall aperture 30 ranges from about 1 inch to about 4 inches, specifically from about 1½ inches to about 3½ inches, more specifically from about 2 inches to about 2¾ inches. In some cases, the diameter ofsmall aperture 30 is about 2⅝ inches. The diameter oflarge aperture 32 generally ranges from about 4½ inches to about 8 inches, specifically from about 5 inches to about 7½ inches, more specifically from about 5½ inches to about 7 inches. In some cases, the diameter oflarge aperture 32 is about 6⅛ inches. The diameter of small half-aperture 34 is comparable in size tolarge aperture 32. Large half-aperture 36 may have a diameter that is larger than 12 inches and is generally about of 24 inches, seemodule 310. -
FIG. 8 shows additional primary modules 600 and 700 that are straight-edged and curved-edged modules, respectively. The straight-edged modules 600 have at least onefull aperture modules Modules full aperture modules aperture module 610 has twofull apertures full aperture 30 on the end,module 620 has asmall aperture 30 and alarge aperture 32 on the side,module 630 has a largefull aperture 32 on the side and two smallfull apertures 30 on the ends, andmodule 660 has one fullsmall aperture 30 on a side. - The curved modules 700 include
modules Modules full apertures 30,modules Module module 780 has four apertures that are allsmall apertures 30. Here too the location of theapertures - Referring now to
FIG. 4 ,secondary modules 400 of the present invention are shown. Thesecondary modules 400 may be used as supporting pieces and include 410, 420, 430, 440, 450, 460, 470 and 480. Thesecondary modules 400 include aprimary block 460, a semi-circle 410, atrapezoid 440, apeak 430, aplug 450, anickel 470, asprinkler 480 and aquarter round 420. Thesecondary modules 400 do not haveapertures secondary modules 400 do not receive the connector parts 500. Instead,secondary modules 400 may be used to support or work with theprimary modules sprinkler 480 is designed to work withprimary modules full aperture aperture 34 of theprimary modules sprinkler 480 is less than about 1 inch to less than about 4 inches, specifically from less than about 1½ inches to less than about 3½ inches, more specifically from less than about 2 inches to less than about 2¾ inches. Both the primary and secondary modules have varying sizes and shapes that will be described below. - The connector parts 500, see
FIG. 7 , are flexible longitudinal members that range in widths and lengths.Connector 510 has a larger diameter thanconnector 520 andconnector 520 has a larger diameter thanconnector 530. The outer surface of each connector may possess designs.Connector 550 has projections, whileconnector 540 has beveled surfaces. The connectors 500 are designed to be used with themodules FIG. 1A , the connector parts 500 may be disposed thorough a full aperture of theprimary modules full aperture half aperture modules kit 10 are solid, firm and soft to reduce danger or harm to children during free play. - Each the
full aperture half aperture apertures apertures primary modules 200 by pulling the full apertureprimary modules 200 along the length of the connector part 500. For example, looking atFIG. 1A , theconnector part 530 is press-fit through asmall aperture 30 of thewheel module 230 and pulled through the passageway and out the second opening. The full-apertureprimary modules 200 may have any combination ofsmall apertures 30 orlarge apertures 32. Generally, each full-apertureprimary modules 200 may have at least one aperture being asmall aperture 30, with the exception forchute 350 that has one large aperture. Eachhalf aperture 34 may have a similar diameter to thelarge aperture 32 and thus allowlarge diameter connectors 510 to fit within theaperture 34, seeconnector 510 andmodule 330 inFIG. 1A . - Looking now to
FIG. 6 ,sprinkler 480 is shown being bent in shape having aconnector end 482 with ahose coupling opening 483, abent portion 485, alongitudinal portion 484, aU-shaped portion 486 and acap end 488. Thehose coupling opening 483 is designed to receive a water hose such as a common garden watering hose.Bent portion 485,longitudinal portion 484 andU-shaped portion 486 are scored with a plurality ofnotches 481 that are disposed at random intervals on saidsprinkler 480 allowing water from the garden hose to spray out at a variety of angles. As mentioned above, themodules 400 are solid, firm and soft to reduce danger.Sprinkler 480 may be made of polypropylene or any suitable material such as soft plastic or flexible yet hard plastic or similar material. The number ofmodules kit 10 and are not meant to be limiting. - The
primary modules secondary modules 400 have a size and shape. The size of themodules kit 10, the modules vary in 6-inch increments and range in size from about 6 inches to about 5 feet, specifically about 1 foot to about 4 feet, more specifically from about 2 feet to about 3 feet. Generally, themodules module modules - The shape of the
modules - The connector parts 500 are flexible foam members having a diameter and a length similar to water noodles. Both the connector diameter and the length may vary. The connector diameter may range from about 2 inches to about 6 inches. Generally, the connector diameter of said connector part 500 is dimensioned and configured to fit in the aperture diameter of a
full aperture aperture 34 of theprimary modules - The
play construction kit 10 withstorage box 100 permits a child to manipulate their environment withmodules kit 10 withstorage box 100 is conducive to free play where children are not restricted by adult-directed objects or directions. Children may work as individuals, but are more likely to work in groups to manipulate themodules kit 10. As a result of using thekit 10 withstorage box 100, children become more active, learn to play together and develop better emotionally, socially and intellectually. Thekit 10 may be used to make any edifice or object. For instance,FIG. 1 shows a child creating a barbell using twowheel modules 230 and aconnector 530 that is disposed through the centermostsmall aperture 30 of eachmodule 230. Other objects can be created and are only limited by the user's creativity.
Claims (24)
1. A play construction kit comprising:
at least one module having a size and a shape, said module having at least one aperture defined on the module, said aperture having a first end and a second end, said aperture having an aperture diameter; and
at least one connector part, said connector part being flexible, said connector part having a connector diameter and a length, said connector diameter of said connector part being able to fit in the aperture diameter of the module.
2. The play construction kit of claim 1 , wherein the shape of the module is geometric.
3. The play construction kit of claim 1 , wherein the shape of the module is organic.
4. The play construction kit of claim 1 , wherein the aperture is a full-aperture.
5. The play construction kit of claim 1 , wherein the aperture is a half-aperture.
6. The play construction kit of claim 1 , wherein the connector part fits in the aperture with friction.
7. The play construction kit of claim 1 , wherein the connector part fits in the aperture without friction.
8. The play construction kit of claim 1 , wherein the module and the connector part is solid, firm and soft.
9. A play construction kit comprising:
at least one module having a size and a shape, said module having at least one aperture defined on the module, said aperture having a first end and a second end, said aperture having an aperture diameter; and
a box having:
a body defining a center open-faced cabinet, a first door defining a first open-faced cabinet and a second door defining a second open-faced cabinet,
said body having a body-back wall with a top edge, a bottom edge, a first side edge and a second side edge,
a body-top piece being disposed at the top edge of the body-back wall,
a body-bottom piece disposed at the bottom edge of the body-back wall,
a body-first side wall disposed at the first side edge of the body-back wall, said body-first side wall having a front edge, at least one first body connector being disposed on the front edge of the body-first side wall, and
a body-second side wall disposed at the second side edge of the body-back wall, said body-second side wall having a front edge, at least one second body connector being disposed on the front edge of the body-second side wall, and
said first door defining a first open-faced cabinet having a first door-back wall with a top edge, a bottom edge, a first side edge and a second side edge,
a first door-top piece being disposed at the top edge of the first door-back wall,
a first door-bottom piece disposed at the bottom edge of the first door-back wall,
a first door-first side wall disposed at the first side edge of the first door-back wall, and
a first door-second side wall disposed at the second side edge of the first door-back wall, at least one matching first door connector being disposed where said first door-second side wall meets the second side edge of the first door-back wall, said matching first door connector corresponding to the first body connector of the body, when said box is in a closed position, said first door-second side wall conceals half of said center open-faced cabinet of the body, and
said second door defining a second open-faced cabinet having a second door-back wall having a top edge, a bottom edge, a first side edge and a second side edge,
a second door-top piece being disposed at the top edge of the second door-back wall,
a second door-bottom piece disposed at the bottom edge of the second door-back wall,
a second door-first side wall disposed at the first side edge of the second door-back wall, at least one matching second door connector being disposed where said second door-first side wall meets the first side edge of the second door-back wall, said matching second door connector corresponding to the second body connector of the body, and
a second door-second side wall disposed at the second side edge of the back wall, when said box is in a closed position said second door-first side wall conceals a remaining half of said center open-faced cabinet of the body defining a rear concealed compartment and when said box is in a closed position said first open faced cabinet of said first door abuts said second open faced cabinet of said second door forming a front concealed compartment, said front concealed compartment being separate from said rear concealed compartment;
wherein said box is dimensioned and configured to hold said module,
wherein said first door is movably connected to said body of the box, and
wherein said second door is movably connected to said body of the box.
10. The play construction kit of claim 9 , wherein the aperture is a full-aperture.
11. The play construction kit of claim 9 , wherein the aperture is a half-aperture.
12. The play construction kit of claim 9 , wherein the module is solid, firm and soft.
13. The play construction kit of claim 9 , further comprising a sprinkler module, said sprinkler module having a bent portion, a longitudinal portion and a U-shaped portion, each said bent portion, said longitudinal portion and said U-shaped portion being scored with a plurality of notches.
14. A play construction kit comprising:
at least one primary module having a size and a shape, said primary module having at least one aperture defined on the primary module, said aperture being a passageway having and connecting a first opening to a second opening, said aperture having an aperture diameter;
at least one connector part, said connector part being flexible, said connector part having a connector diameter and a length, said connector diameter of said connector part being able to fit inside the aperture diameter of the primary module;
at least one secondary module having a size and a shape, said secondary module being absent said aperture of said primary module; and
a box having:
a body defining a center open-faced cabinet, a first door defining a first open-faced cabinet and a second door defining a second open-faced cabinet,
said body having a body-back wall with a top edge, a bottom edge, a first side edge and a second side edge,
a body-top piece being disposed at the top edge of the body-back wall,
a body-bottom piece disposed at the bottom edge of the body-back wall,
a body-first side wall disposed at the first side edge of the body-back wall, said body-first side wall having a front edge, at least one first body connector being disposed on the front edge of the body-first side wall, and
a body-second side wall disposed at the second side edge of the body-back wall, said body-second side wall having a front edge, at least one second body connector being disposed on the front edge of the body-second side wall, and
said first door having a first door-back wall with a top edge, a bottom edge, a first side edge and a second side edge,
a first door-top piece being disposed at the top edge of the first door-back wall,
a first door-bottom piece disposed at the bottom edge of the first door-back wall,
a first door-first side wall disposed at the first side edge of the first door-back wall, and
a first door-second side wall disposed at the second side edge of the first door-back wall, at least one matching first door connector being disposed at a corner, said corner formed where said first door-second side wall meets the second side edge of the first door-back wall, said matching first door connector corresponding to the first body connector of the body, when said box is in a closed position, said first door-second side wall conceals half of said center open-faced cabinet of the body, and
said second door having a second door-back wall having a top edge, a bottom edge, a first side edge and a second side edge,
a second door-top piece being disposed at the top edge of the second door-back wall,
a second door-bottom piece disposed at the bottom edge of the second door-back wall,
a second door-first side wall disposed at the first side edge of the second door-back wall, at least one matching second door connector being disposed at a corner, said corner formed where said second door-first side wall meets the first side edge of the second door-back wall, said matching second door connector corresponding to the second body connector of the body, and
a second door-second side wall disposed at the second side edge of the back wall, when said box is in a closed position said second door-first side wall conceals a remaining half of said center open-faced cabinet of the body defining a rear concealed compartment and when said box is in a closed position said first open faced cabinet of said first door abuts said second open faced cabinet of said second door forming a front concealed compartment, said front concealed compartment being separate from said rear concealed compartment;
wherein said box is dimensioned and configured to hold said module,
wherein said first door is movably connected to said body of the box,
wherein said second door is movably connected to said body of the box,
wherein said box is dimensioned and configured to hold said primary module, said secondary module and said connector part.
15. The play construction kit of claim 14 , wherein said primary module, said secondary module and said connector part is solid, firm and soft.
16. The play construction kit of claim 14 , wherein said secondary module further comprises a sprinkler, said sprinkler having a bent portion, a longitudinal portion and a U-shaped portion, each said bent portion, said longitudinal portion and said U-shaped portion being scored with a plurality of notches, said sprinkler being connectable to a water hose, said sprinkler being able to dispense water through said plurality of notches.
17. A play construction kit comprising:
at least one module having a size and a shape, said module having at least one aperture defined on the module, said aperture having a first end and a second end, said aperture having an aperture diameter; and
a box having:
a body defining a center open-faced cabinet, a first door defining a first open-faced cabinet and a second door defining a second open-faced cabinet,
said body having a body-back wall with a first side edge and a second side edge,
a body-first side wall disposed at the first side edge of the body-back wall, said body-first side wall having a front edge, at least one first body connector being disposed on the front edge of the body-first side wall, and
a body-second side wall disposed at the second side edge of the body-back wall, said body-second side wall having a front edge, at least one second body connector being disposed on the front edge of the body-second side wall, and
said first door having a first door-back wall with a second side edge,
a first door-second side wall disposed at the second side edge of the first door-back wall, at least one matching first door connector being disposed at a corner, said corner formed where said first door-second side wall meets the second side edge of the first door-back wall, said matching first door connector corresponding to the first body connector of the body, an exterior of said first door-second side wall conceals half said center open-faced cabinet when said box is in a closed position, and
said second door having a second door-back wall having a first side edge,
a second door-first side wall disposed at a first side edge of the second door-back wall, at least one matching second door connector being disposed at a corner, said corner formed where said second door-first side wall meets the first side edge of the second door-back wall, said matching second door connector corresponding to the second body connector of the body, an exterior of said second door-first side wall conceals a remaining half of said center open-faced cabinet when said box is in a closed position defining a rear concealed compartment, when said box is in a closed position said first open faced cabinet of said first door abuts said second open faced cabinet of said second door forming a front concealed compartment, said front concealed compartment being separate from said rear concealed compartment
wherein said box is dimensioned and configured to hold said module,
wherein said first door is movably and matingly connected to said body of the box,
wherein said second door is movably and matingly connected to said body of the box.
18. The play construction kit of claim 17 , wherein said secondary module further comprises a sprinkler, said sprinkler having a bent portion, a longitudinal portion and a U-shaped portion, each said bent portion, said longitudinal portion and said U-shaped portion being scored with a plurality of notches, said sprinkler capable of dispensing water through said plurality of notches.
19. A play module comprising:
at least one organic module having a size and a shape and being solid, firm and soft, said organic module having a half-aperture.
20. A play kit comprising:
at least one organic module having a size and a shape, said organic module being solid, firm and soft, said organic module having at least one full aperture defined on the module, said aperture having a first end and a second end, said aperture having an aperture diameter; and
at least one connector part possessing designs on surfaces of said connector, said connector part being flexible, solid, firm and soft, said connector part having a connector diameter and a length, said connector diameter of said connector part being able to fit in the aperture diameter of the module.
21. The play kit of claim 20 , further comprising at least one half-aperture.
22. The play kit of claim 20 , wherein the connector part fits in the aperture with friction.
23. The play kit of claim 20 , wherein the connector part fits in the aperture without friction.
24. The play kit of claim 20 , wherein the aperture is disposed on the periphery of said organic module.
