Description
- This application claims priority under 35 U.S.C. § 119(e) to U.S. Provisional Application Ser. No. 60/721,186 filed Sep. 27, 2005. application Ser. No. 60/721,186 is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety.
- The present disclosure relates generally to closure arrangements packages, and, in particular, to a closure arrangement for recloseable tamper-evident packages, and methods of using tamper-evident packages.
- Reclosable packages are convenient because they can be closed and sealed to preserve and contain the enclosed contents. Reclosable packages are also advantageous because they may be opened and closed multiple times. However, in certain applications such as where it is desired to maintain the security and integrity of the contents of the package, it may be desired that a reclosable package be capable of being opened and closed multiple times, and also be capable of being closed in such a way that it cannot be readily opened again without providing an indication that it has been opened or tampered with. In this way, the package is tamper-evident, such that an indication, such as a visual indication, is apparent if the package is opened after having been closed in such a way to prevent re-opening without providing an indication of tampering. For example, it may be desired to place evidence for use in a legal proceeding in a package. This may require opening and closing the package multiple times to deposit contents into the package, and when it is desired that the contents no longer be accessed, then closing the package in a manner that prevents the evidence contained within from being accessed or tampered without an indication being provided. Similarly, it may be desired to place cash or financial instruments in a package where the package is capable of being opened and closed multiple times before being closed in a manner that provides an indication if the contents are later accessed. Other applications for tamper-evident packages exist.
- Consequently, a need exists for a package that can be opened and closed multiple times, and can be closed in such a way that an indication is provided if the package is re-opened.
- In one aspect, there is disclosed a slider device for use with a zipper closure arrangement for a recloseable package that has a top wall, a first sidewall depending from the top wall, and a second sidewall depending from the top wall. Together, the top wall, first sidewall, and second sidewall define a cavity adapted to receive the zipper closure arrangement. The slider device also includes a clip that is secured to at least one of the top wall, first sidewall, and second sidewall. The clip is moveable from a first, inoperative position to a second position, where the second position includes the clip being oriented to operatively engage the zipper closure arrangement.
- In another aspect, a closure assembly is disclosed that has a zipper closure arrangement with first and second zipper profiles constructed and arranged to selectively interlock. A slider device is oriented to slide along the zipper closure arrangement, which includes a top wall that is oriented to slide along a top of the zipper closure arrangement, a first sidewall depending from the top wall that is oriented to slide along a side of the zipper closure arrangement, and a second sidewall depending from the top wall that is oriented to slide along a side of the zipper closure arrangement. Together, the top wall, first sidewall, and second sidewall define a cavity to operatively receive the zipper closure arrangement. The slider device also includes a clip that is secured to at least one of the top wall, first sidewall, and second sidewall. The clip is moveable from a first position to a second position, where in the first position, the clip is remote from the zipper closure arrangement, and in the second position, the clip is oriented to operatively engage the zipper closure arrangement.
- In another aspect, a package is disclosed that includes a surrounding wall that defines a bottom, an interior volume, and a mouth to provide access to the interior volume. A closure assembly is oriented at the mouth of the package, where the closure assembly includes a zipper closure arrangement having first and second zipper profiles constructed and arranged to selectively interlock, and a slider device oriented to slide along the zipper closure arrangement. The slider device includes a top wall oriented to slide along a top of the zipper closure arrangement, a first sidewall depending from the top wall oriented to slide along a side of the zipper closure arrangement, and a second sidewall depending from the top wall oriented to slide along a side of the zipper closure arrangement. The top wall, first sidewall, and second sidewall define a cavity to operatively receive the zipper closure arrangement therein. There is also a clip secured to at least one of the top wall, first sidewall, and second sidewall, the clip being moveable from a first position to a second position. In the first position, the clip is remote from the zipper closure arrangement, and in the second position, the clip is oriented to operatively engage the zipper closure arrangement.
- In yet another aspect, a tamper-evident zipper closure arrangement is disclosed that includes a first closure including mating profile members constructed and arranged to selectively move between being interlocked and separated, and a second closure, adjacent to the first closure, and including mating profile members constructed and arranged to selectively interlock. The second closure includes a tamper-evident structure to signal when the second closure has been interlocked and then separated at least once after being interlocked.
- In a further aspect, a method of using a package is disclosed. The package includes a package surrounding wall defining an interior volume, a mouth, and a closure assembly oriented at the mouth. The closure assembly includes a zipper closure arrangement and a slider device operably oriented on the zipper closure arrangement. The method of using the package includes grasping a slider device and pushing a clip down to engage the clip against a portion of the zipper closure arrangement, and moving the slider device in a first direction while the clip squeezes the portion of the zipper closure arrangement to close the mouth.
- The above summary of the present invention is not intended to describe each illustrated embodiment or every implementation of the present invention. The figures and detailed description that follow more particularly exemplify these embodiments.

FIG. 10 is an enlarged, cross-sectional view of a tamper-evident closure useable in the closure assembly ofFIGS. 1 and 2 . - The present invention is believed to be applicable to a variety of packaging arrangements. The invention has been found to be particularly advantageous for use in sealing mechanisms for polymeric packages. An appreciation of various aspects of the invention is best gained through a discussion of an application example for such a packaging arrangement.

FIG. 1 illustrates apackage 20, which includes a first panel section 22 and second, opposed,panel section 24, typically made from a flexible, polymeric film. For some manufacturing applications, the first andsecond panel sections 22, 24 are heat-sealed together along twoedges interior 30 of thepackage 20. The fold line comprises thebottom edge 32. Alternatively, twoseparate panel sections 22, 24 of polymeric film may be used and heat-sealed together along the twoedges bottom 32. Together,panel sections 22, 24 comprise a surroundingwall 34 that defines thepackage interior 30. Access is provided to theinterior 30 of thepackage 20 through amouth 36. Aclosure assembly 38 is part ofpackage 20 adjacent tomouth 36. -
FIG. 2 illustrates anexample closure assembly 38 constructed in accordance with the present disclosure.Closure assembly 38 comprises aslider device 40 and azipper closure arrangement 42.Closure assembly 38 is shown inFIG. 1 attached to surroundingwall 34 alongmouth 36. For example,closure assembly 38 may be heat sealed to surroundingwall 34. Other methods of attachment are possible. -
Zipper closure arrangement 42 includes afirst zipper profile 44 defining afirst closure 46 and asecond zipper profile 48 defining asecond closure 50.First closure 46 is constructed and arranged to selectively interlock. Many embodiments ofclosure 46 are useable. One embodiment ofclosure 46 is areclosable closure 46 shown inFIG. 9 . In the embodiment shown inFIG. 9 ,reclosable closure 46 comprises first and second opposingsurfaces surface 52 is a firsthooked profile member 56. Attached to the second opposingsurface 54 is a secondhooked profile member 58. Specifically, in the particular embodiment shown, the first and secondhooked profile members - In the specific embodiment shown, the reclosable closure further includes a
first closure post 60 attached to first opposingsurface 52 adjacent to the firsthooked profile member 56. Thefirst closure post 60 and firsthooked profile member 56 form agap 61 alongfirst surface 52 that is configured to receive secondhooked profile member 58 withingap 61. First and secondhooked profile members end region 62 of the firsthooked profile member 56 engages with anopposing end region 64 of the secondhooked profile member 58 to interlock the first and secondhooked profile members second profile members closure 46 in a separating direction to cause first hookedprofile member 56 and secondhooked profile member 58 to deform and to slide out of contact. In some embodiments, a slider device is used to separate themembers -
Second closure 50 is also constructed and arranged to selectively interlock. Many embodiments ofclosure 50 are useable.Closure 50 may be proximate to firstreclosable closure 46 along first and second opposingsurfaces closure 50 may be a closure constructed in accordance with the embodiment depicted inFIG. 9 . In another embodiment,closure 50 is a tamper-evident closure that includes a tamper-evident structure to provide a signal whenclosure 50 has been interlocked and then separated at least once after being interlocked. An embodiment of a tamper-evident closure is depicted inFIG. 10 . - In reference now to
FIG. 10 ,closure 50 includes afirst zipper profile 66 defining amale profile member 68 and asecond zipper profile 70 defining afemale profile member 72.Male profile member 68 andfemale profile member 72 are constructed and arranged to selectively interlock. Themale profile member 68 includes ahead 74, having a wedge-shapedforward portion 76 and a straightrearward portion 78, and astem 80 connecting thehead 74 to the remaining portion of thefirst zipper profile 66. - Still in reference to
FIG. 10 ,female member 72 comprises first andsecond arms void 86 sized to receive theforward portion 76 ofhead 74 ofmale member 68. Each of thearms female member 72 includesfingers void 86 to engage withrearward portion 78 ofhead 74 whenhead 74 is oriented in thevoid 86 of thefemale member 72. - In
FIG. 10 ,second closure 50 also includes first andsecond posts first zipper profile 66, where thefirst post 92 is adjacent to and against thefirst arm 82 offemale member 72, and thesecond post 94 is adjacent to and against thesecond arm 84 offemale member 72 when themale member 68 is operably oriented in thefemale profile member 72.Stem 80 is frangible, such that a sufficient force applied in a separating direction tosecond closure 50 will causestem 80 to break beforemale profile member 68 disengages fromfemale profile member 72. The breaking ofstem 80 separates head 74 from the remaining portion offirst zipper profile 66, thereby providing an indication that thesecond closure 50 has been tampered with. -
Closure assembly 38 includes aslider device 40.Slider device 40 is oriented to slide along thezipper closure arrangement 42 and is constructed to selectively squeeze one or more of first andsecond closures slider device 40 are usable. A perspective view of one useable embodiment of aslider device 40 is shown inFIG. 3 . In the embodiment depicted inFIG. 3 ,slider device 40 comprises atop wall 96, afirst side wall 98 depending fromtop wall 96, and asecond side wall 100 depending fromtop wall 96. Together, thetop wall 96,first side wall 98, andsecond side wall 100 define acavity 102 to operatively receive azipper closure arrangement 42.Top wall 96 comprises anexterior surface 104 and aninterior surface 106.Interior surface 106 is apparent inFIG. 5 . -
Slider device 40 also comprises aclip 108 that is movable from a first, inoperative position to a second position. By “inoperative,” it is meant that when in the first position, theclip 108 does not affect the operation of theslider device 40 relative to thezipper closure arrangement 42. Many embodiments ofclip 108 are possible. A perspective view of one embodiment ofclip 108 is shown inFIG. 3 . In the embodiment depicted inFIG. 3 ,clip 108 is secured to at least one of thetop wall 96,first side wall 98, andsecond side wall 100. In the embodiment shown inFIG. 3 ,clip 108 includes afirst wall 110, afirst leg 112 depending from thefirst wall 110, and asecond leg 114 depending from thefirst wall 110. The embodiment shown inFIG. 3 depicts theclip 108 secured to thetop wall 96. A livinghinge 116 is depicted in this embodiment as securing thetop wall 96 of theslider device 40 to the clipfirst wall 110. - In the embodiment shown,
top wall 96 ofslider device 40 includes an aperture oropening 118 extending throughtop wall 96.Opening 118 is sized or dimensioned to allow the first andsecond legs clip 108 to move through thecavity 102.First sidewall 98 ofslider device 40 defines afirst groove 134 sized to receivefirst leg 112 ofclip 108.Second sidewall 100 ofslider device 40 defines asecond groove 136 sized to receivesecond leg 114 ofclip 108. -
Clip 108 is moveable from a first position, as shown inFIG. 3 , wherein theclip 108 is inoperative, to a second position, as shown inFIG. 5 , wherein theclip 108 is operatively oriented to engage thezipper closure arrangement 42. In the embodiment shown inFIG. 3 , in the first position ofclip 108, the first andsecond legs first wall 110 is angled relative to thetop wall 96. As shown inFIG. 4 , when theclip 108 is in the second position, the first andsecond legs cavity 102. In particular, in the illustrated embodiment, the first andsecond legs cavity 102, and the clipfirst wall 110 is againsttop wall 96.Clip 108 is brought to the second position by movingclip 108 throughopening 118 intop wall 96. - In some embodiments,
slider device 40 includes a plow orsplitter 120.Splitter 120 is constructed and arranged to at least partially separate thezipper closure arrangement 42 when theslider device 40 is slid along thezipper closure arrangement 42. One embodiment of asplitter 120 is depicted inFIG. 5 . The depictedsplitter 120 depends frominterior surface 106 oftop wall 96, and is generally wedge-shaped.Splitter 120 is characterized by asplitter depth 121, defined as the distance thatsplitter 120 protrudes away from surfaceinterior surface 106.Splitter depth 121 is generally not greater than the distance fromtop surface 138 ofzipper closure arrangement 42 to the uppermost hooked profile member, such ashooked profile member 56. - In use, as the
slider device 40 is slid or moved in an opening direction A (FIG. 1 ), thesplitter 120 urges the firsthooked profile member 56 and second hooked profile member 58 (FIG. 9 ) to deform and move out of engagement, causing thefirst closure 46 to unmate and open. In the embodiment depicted inFIG. 9 ,splitter 120 contacts first and second opposingsurfaces first closure 46, so that motion ofsplitter 120 in an opening direction causes a separating force to be applied to opposingsurfaces surface 52 to the firsthooked profile member 56, and throughsurface 54 to secondhooked profile member 58, causing eachhooked profile member - When the
slider device 40 is slid along thezipper closure arrangement 42,splitter 120 does not operatively affect thesecond closure 50. In the embodiment of thezipper closure arrangement 42 depicted inFIG. 8 , surfaces 52, 54 ofzipper closure arrangement 42 are sufficiently flexible that the separating force applied to them bysplitter 120 neartop surface 138 is significantly transmitted tofirst closure 46 but is not significantly transmitted tosecond closure 50. - Referring now to the embodiment of
slider device 40 depicted inFIG. 6 , the first andsecond sidewalls slider device 40 define afirst width 122 therebetween to define azipper squeezing region 124. Thefirst width 122 is sized to cause the first andsecond sidewalls zipper closure arrangement 42. For example, in certain embodiments, thezipper squeezing region 124 is sized to cause the first andsecond sidewalls first closure 46 ofzipper closure arrangement 42 to cause first hookedprofile member 56 and secondhooked profile member 58 to interlock. First andsecond sidewalls second width 126 therebetween to define azipper non-squeezing region 128.Second width 126 is typically greater thanfirst width 124. Furthermore, in the embodiment shown inFIG. 6 , the first andsecond sidewalls hook construction top wall 96.Zipper non-squeezing region 128 is between eachhook construction zipper squeezing region 124. -
Slider device 40 is configured to engage withzipper closure arrangement 42. Referring to the particular embodiment depicted inFIG. 8 ,zipper closure arrangement 42 includes end ortop surfaces 138, afirst region 140 corresponding tofirst closure 46, asecond region 142 corresponding tosecond closure 50, and package-side or bottom surfaces 144. In one embodiment, thesecond region 142 projects outwardly relative to thefirst region 140. In the embodiment shown, the bottom surfaces 144 intersect with anouter portion 146 of thezipper closure arrangement 42 to define projectingcorners 148. Thecorners 148 and the bottom surfaces 144 together result inrails 150 that are used for retaining theslider device 40 in sliding relation on thezipper closure arrangement 42. - In use,
interior surface 102 ofslider 40 engages with and slides alongtop surfaces 138 ofzipper closure arrangement 42.Zipper squeezing region 124 engages with and slides alongfirst region 140, andzipper non-squeezing region 128 engages with and slides alongsecond region 142.Zipper squeezing region 124 generally contactsfirst region 140 and applies a compression load or squeezing force tofirst closure 46.Zipper non-squeezing region 128 generally provides a clearance withsecond region 142 or makes light contact withsecond region 142, such thatzipper non-squeezing region 128 does not cause significant squeezing force to be applied tosecond closure 50.Hook construction - Referring to
FIGS. 1 and 2 , whenclip 108 is in the first position, engaging theslider device 40 by moving it transversely in a first direction B (FIG. 1 ) across thezipper closure arrangement 42 causes a squeezing pressure to be applied byzipper squeezing region 124 tofirst closure 46. In one embodiment, the squeezing pressure causes firsthooked profile member 56 to engage with secondhooked profile member 58, causingfirst closure 46 to be closed. Subsequently, engagingslider device 40 by moving it transversely in a second direction (A,FIG. 1 ), reverse of the first direction, causessplitter 120 to engage with first and second opposingsurface first closure 46 and apply a disassembling force to first and secondhooked profile members first closure 46 to be opened. While theclip 108 is in the first position, no squeezing pressure is applied to thesecond closure 50, and the male andfemale profile members - When
clip 108 is moved to the second position (FIG. 4 ), engaging theslider device 40 by moving it transversely in a first direction (B) across thezipper closure arrangement 42 causes both a first squeezing pressure to be applied byzipper squeezing region 124 tofirst closure 46 and a second squeezing pressure to be applied by first andsecond legs clip 108 tosecond closure 50. Specifically, thelegs second region 142. In one embodiment, the first squeezing pressure causes firsthooked profile member 56 to engage with secondhooked profile member 58, causingfirst closure 46 to be closed. The second squeezing pressure causesmale profile member 66 andfemale profile member 70 to engage and interlock, causingsecond closure 50 to be closed. Subsequently, engagingslider device 40 by moving it transversely in a second direction (A,FIG. 1 ), reverse of the first direction, causessplitter 120 to engage with first and second opposingsurfaces first closure 46 and apply a disassembling force to first and secondhooked profile members first closure 46 to be opened. However, because of the configuration ofsecond closure 50, for example by being sufficiently remote fromfirst closure 46, engagingslider device 120 in the second direction does not cause a sufficient force to be applied tosecond closure 50 to cause it to be opened. Accordingly, once the male andfemale profile members second closure 50 are engaged and interlocked, further motion ofslider device 40 will not causesecond closure 50 to open. - To open
second closure 50, it is necessary to apply force in a separating direction tosecond closure 50, such as by manually spreadingzipper closure arrangement 42. When applying a tensile load or separating force tosecond closure 50, the amount of force required to disengagemale profile member 66 fromfemale profile member 70 is greater than the amount of force required to breakmale profile member 66 atneck 80. Thus, applying a sufficient separating force will breakmale profile member 66 atneck 80, releasing the connection betweenmale profile member 66 andfemale profile member 70, and causingsecond closure 50 to be opened. However, the brokenmale profile member 66 will provide an indication that the package 10 has been opened at least once after thesecond closure 50 has been closed, providing evidence of tampering. -
Zipper closure arrangement 42 typically comprises a polymeric material. Alternatively, as shown inFIG. 7 ,zipper closure arrangement 42 may comprise a plurality of materials. For example, thefirst closure 46 of zipper closure arrangement may comprise a first material, such as polyethylene, and thesecond closure 50 ofzipper closure arrangement 42 may comprise a second material, such as polypropylene. - A method of using a package such as
package 20 is provided. Thepackage 20 includes apackage surrounding wall 34 defining aninterior volume 30, amouth 36, and aclosure assembly 38 oriented at themouth 36.Closure assembly 38 includes azipper closure arrangement 42. In one embodiment, the method of using a package includes grasping a slider device such asslider device 40 and pushing a clip such asclip 108 down toward theslider device 40, and moving theslider device 40 in a first direction while theclip 108 squeezes a portion of thezipper closure arrangement 42 to close themouth 36. In the embodiment ofclosure assembly 38 depicted inFIG. 2 , pushingclip 108 down causes first andsecond legs clip 108 to engage against a portion ofzipper closure arrangement 42, such assecond region 142 associated withsecond closure 50.Slider device 40 is moved in a first direction alongzipper closure arrangement 42, and in doing so,legs clip 108 apply a squeezing force tosecond region 142, typically causingmale profile member 66 to interlock withfemale profile member 70. When male profile member is interlocked withfemale profile member 70, thesecond closure 50 cannot be opened without breaking a portion of thesecond closure 50. The method may also include applying a separating force tosecond closure 50 so that a portion of thesecond closure 50 breaks, allowing access to the interior 30 ofpackage 20. - The method of using a package also includes a step, before the step of grasping a slider device and pushing a clip down, where the earlier step includes grasping a slider device and moving the slider device in a first direction to squeeze only a portion of the zipper closure and releasably close the mouth. For example, where the
clip 108 is not pushed down towardtop face 96 of theslider device 40, but rather is removed from opening 118 and in an inoperative position andslider device 40 is moved in a first direction alongzipper closure arrangement 42, then first andsecond sidewalls slider device 40 apply a squeezing force only tofirst region 140. The squeezing force applied tofirst region 140 typically causes first and secondhooked members second region 142, so thatmale profile member 66 does not interlock withfemale profile member 70. - In one embodiment,
slider device 40 andzipper closure arrangement 42 are configured so that afterclip 108 has been moved to a second, operative position andslider device 40 has been moved in a direction to operatively engagemale member 66 andfemale member 70 ofsecond closure 50,slider device 40 may be slid off ofzipper closure arrangement 42 and disposed of. - The above specification and examples are believed to provide a complete description of the manufacture and use of particular embodiments of the invention. Because many embodiments of the invention can be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, the true scope and spirit of the invention reside in the broad meaning of the claims hereinafter appended.
