Abstract
Description
- 1. Field of the Invention
- The present invention generally relates to a control module assembly, and more particularly to a control module assembly having a front bezel.
- 2. Description of Related Art
- An existing control modules used for automotive or vehicular applications usually comprises a large header connector which are terminated to a printed circuit board (PCB). The header connector includes a plurality of terminals for insertion into appropriate holes in the PCB. The size of the connector will affect the size of the whole control module directly, so the large connector might take up a large area in a panel onto which the control module is fixed. With the ever-increasing density of the panel in electronic applications, space in the panel is very valuable, thereby leading to the ever-increasing miniaturization of electrical connectors.
- U.S. Patent Publication No. 2003/0166348 A1 discloses an electrical connector therein. The electrical connector configured for connection to a substrate includes a housing that carries a plurality of electrical contacts and a contact guide. Each contact has a contact interface interconnectable with a reciprocal contact interface carried by the substrate. The contact guide has a plurality of apertures positioned to receive the contact interfaces of the contacts. By devising a single locking mechanism for securing both the contact guide and the substrate to the electrical connector, space on the electrical connector is thus saved.
- However, in order to shelter a plurality of contacts with connecting portion exposed outside, it is still desired to provide a control module assembly having a front bezel.
- Accordingly, a main object of the present invention is to provide a control module assembly which is reduced in size and having a front bezel for sheltering connecting portions of contacts therein.
- In order to achieve the object set forth, a control module assembly in accordance with the present invention comprises a module housing defining a receiving cavity therein having a front opening, a printed circuit board adapted to be housed in the receiving cavity, a header connector including a plurality of contacts mounted on the printed circuit board and accessible from the front opening, and a front bezel installed onto the header connector and attached to the module housing. The header connector includes interfaces adapted for mating with complementary connectors and interlocked with the opening. The header connector has sets of different passageways accommodating the contacts and the front bezel includes shrouds for sheltering the contacts therein so as to receive the complementary connectors.
- Other objects, advantages and novel features of the invention will become more apparent from the following detailed description when taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings.

FIG. 8 is an assembled, perspective view of the control module assembly with the module housing being removed to facilitate the illustration. - Reference will now be made in detail to the preferred embodiment of the present invention.
- Referring to
FIGS. 1 and 2 , acontrol module assembly 100 in accordance with the present invention comprises amodule housing 1, a rightangle header connector 2 retained in a first end edge of a printed circuit board (PCB) 3 and housed in the module housing, and afront bezel 4 connecting with themodule housing 1 for sheltering a front end of theheader connector 2. - Referring to
FIGS. 2-4 , themodule housing 1 is in the form of a approximately box-like structure and comprises atop wall 11, abottom wall 12 opposite to thetop wall 11, and a pair ofsidewalls 13 connecting with the top and thebottom walls top wall 11, thebottom wall 12 and thesidewalls 13 together define a receivingcavity 14 therebetween having a front opening (not labeled). Thetop wall 11 is step-shaped and forms afront portion 110, arear portion 112 lower than the front portion, and a slopedportion 114 connecting with thefront portion 110 and therear portion 112. Themodule housing 1 includes a first connectingportion 15 extending forwardly from a front end thereof and connecting with thetop wall 11 and the pair ofsidewalls 13, and a second connectingportion 16 extending forwardly from the front end thereof and connecting with thebottom wall 12. A plurality oflatches 17 are disposed in a horizontal portion of the first connectingportion 15 and the second connectingportion 16. Eachsidewall 13 forms a inwardlydepressed arc portion 130 in a rear thereof. Themodule housing 1 provides a pair ofmounting flanges 18 disposed in thearc portions 130 of thesidewalls 13 and extending outwardly. Eachmounting flange 18 defines amounting hole 180 therein. Eachsidewall 13 forms ashoulder 132 in an inner of a bottom portion thereof for supporting thePCB 3 and theshoulder 132 defines aindentation 1320 in a front end thereof. A plurality ofvertical ribs 19 are disposed in thereceiving cavity 14. Eachvertical rib 19 has a supportingpillar 192 having a height equal to a height of theshoulder 132 for supporting thePCB 3 and aclamping slit 194 for clamping a end edge of thePCB 3 to prevent thePCB 3 from jumping upwardly. Thetop wall 11 and the horizontal portion of the first connectingportion 15 have a plurality ofabutment ribs 151 in an inner thereof. A plurality ofretention ribs 156 are disposed in inner surfaces of the first connectingportion 15 and the second connectingportion 16 for interferentially mating with a outer surface of thefront bezel 4. - Referring to
FIGS. 5 and 6 , theheader connector 2 accessible from the front opening includes aheader housing 5, a plurality ofcontacts 6 assembled to theheader housing 5 in two rows and acontact organizer 7 attached to theheader housing 5. - The
header housing 5 includes anelongated base body 50 having aconnection surface 500 and aback face 502 opposite to theconnection surface 500. A pair of generally trapezoidalside wall portions 52 project rearward from right and left edge portions of the back face of the base body, and further, a pair of generally trapezoidalside wall portions 52 project rearward from a intermediate portion between the right and the left edge portions, thereby the base body being divided into three areas each defining a set ofpassageways 503 in upper and lower rows and extending through from theback face 502 to theconnection surface 500. Aattachment surface 504 of thebase body 50 is constituted by a bottom surface of thebase body 50 and bottom faces of theside wall portions 52. Eachside wall portion 52 provides a cylindrical guidingpost 54 extending downwardly from theattachment surface 504 for securing theheader connector 2 to thePCB 3. Thebase body 50 has a plurality ofabutment tabs 55 projecting upwardly from a top surface thereof for backing up against the abutment ribs to provide a support during mating with complementary harness connectors (not shown), and defines two pairs ofcutouts 56 respectively in a top wall of adjacent two areas and opposite sidewalls thereof. - The
contacts 6 are separated into three groups and each group is arranged in upper and lower rows. The three groups ofcontacts 6 are inserted into corresponding sets ofpassageways 503 of thebase body 50 from theback face 502, thereby forming three different connector interfaces for mating with the complementary harness connectors. Thecontacts 6 include three types of contact having different transverse width for carrying different levels of current. Eachcontact 6 comprises a connectingportion 60 exposed to theconnection surface 500, aretention portion 62 extending rearward from the connectingportion 60 and retained inrespective passageway 503, and atail portion 64 extending perpendicular to the connectingportion 60. Eachretention portion 62 of the contact hasbarbs 620 in opposite side edge thereof. - The
contact organizer 7 is plate-shaped and has a plurality of throughapertures 72 for allowing thetail portions 64 of thecontacts 6 to extend therethrough, and a plurality of circular guidingholes 74 aligning to corresponding guidingposts 54. The guidingposts 54 are sized and shaped to form an interference fit with corresponding guidingholes 74 in thecontact organizer 7 so that thecontact organizer 7 can be press fitted onto the guidingposts 54. - Referring to
FIGS. 2 and 3 , the PCB 3 defines a pair ofnotches 30 in opposite sides of a second end edge thereof for eliminating interference with themodule housing 1. - Referring to
FIGS. 2, 3 and 7, thefront bezel 4 comprises a rectangular hollow connectingframe 40 and three integratedconnector shrouds 42 projecting forwardly from the connectingframe 40 and corresponding to the three connector interfaces of theheader connector 2. Eachconnector shroud 42 defines a throughreceptacle 43 for receiving the mating harness connector. The connectingframe 40 includes a plurality of wedge-shaped latching bosses 44 projecting from top and bottom surfaces thereof and a plurality of supportingpillars 45 disposed in an inner of a bottom wall thereof, and defines a plurality ofslots 46 in a rear of a top wall thereof. The connectingframe 40 provides a plurality ofcrush ribs 47 in an inner of the rear thereof corresponding to the cutouts of theheader housing 5. A pair of mountingflanges 48 are disposed in opposite ends of the connectingframe 40 for providing a support to thefront bezel 4 for strain relief and each mountingflange 48 defines a mountinghole 480 therein. Thecrush ribs 47 are sized and shaped to form an interference fit with corresponding cutouts in theheader housing 5 so that thefront bezel 4 can be press fit onto theheader connector 2. - Referring to
FIGS. 1, 2 and 8, in assembly, thefront bezel 4 is installed onto theheader connector 2 with thePCB 3, with theabutment tabs 55 of theheader housing 5 engaging with theslots 46 of thefront bezel 4 and thecrush ribs 47 of thefront bezel 4 being press fitted in the cutouts of theheader housing 5. The first end edge of the PCB is supported by the supportingpillars 45 of the front bezel. Then, the header connector with the PCB and the front bezel is housed in the module housing with the latchingbosses 44 of thefront bezel 4 latching with thelatches 17 of themodule housing 1. The PCB is rested on theshoulder 132 of themodule housing 1 and sandwiched in the clamping slits 194 of the vertical ribs. Thecontrol module assembly 100 in accordance with the present invention is thus formed. - It is to be understood, however, that even though numerous characteristics and advantages of the present invention have been set forth in the foregoing description, together with details of the structure and function of the invention, the disclosure is illustrative only, and changes may be made in detail, especially in matters of shape, size, and arrangement of parts within the principles of the invention to the full extent indicated by the broad general meaning of the terms in which the appended claims are expressed.
