Patented Apr. 23, 1935 PATENT OFFICE DOMINO Philipp Schubert, Munich, Germany Application June 16, 1933, Serial No. 676,100 In Germany September 23, 1932 1 Claim.
5 course of the game is to be laid down beside another on the play-surface may be placed with one side of its middle field transversely adjacent the head-end of said other domino. By this it will be possible to put together the dominoes during playing on a relatively small area in the form of a grid composed of rows crossing each other in perpendicular direction.
In the accompanying drawings Fig. 1 shows a complete series or set of dominoes having three fields according to my invention, each domino being provided with markings as are used on dominoes of the ordinary kind, while Fig. 2 shows how the dominoes may be put together side by side on the play-surface during the course of the game. For the entire set, for instance, forty dominoes of the kind forming part of my invention are used, each domino being provided with three fields having either a zero marking which is represented by a blank field or a marking consisting of one, two or three spots.
Evidently the number of dominoes of which the set is composed may be increased as desired, if a greater number of markings is used on the fields as is the case in ordinary domino games, markings from zero to three, however, are in general fully sufficient. Furthermore, instead of providing fields on the dominoes with one, two or three spots other distinctive markings, such as dashes, pictures or surfaces of different colors may be used, as in the present case it is of no importance in which way the marking of the fields is accomplished or according to which rules the game is played. The essence of myinvention consists essentially therein that by using dominoes with three square fields positioned in alignment there will be obtained the possibility'of putting together the dominoes on the play-surface in transverse direction with the side of a middle field adjacent the head-end of a domino which had already been laid down on the play-surface. By this the playsurface, as may be seen from Fig. 2, may be much smaller than would be possible when using dominoes having only two fields and at the same time enjoyment afforded by the game is considerably enhanced and the overseeing of the game quite considerably facilitated, especially for children.
In addition to this, by my invention the game will be made considerably more interesting for the reason that in most cases, when placing a new domino, as indicated by the arrow in Fig. 2, beside one which had already been laid down on the play-surface two markings must be fitted instead of only one as in the ordinary domino game.
In the present case the domino a to be laid down having the three markings 3, 1, 3 must on the one hand fit with its under square field with three spots the middle field of the domino b and on the other hand the middle field having one spot must be placed adjacent the head-end of the domino c,
' said head-end having a field with one spot.
The enjoyment of playing will thus be enhanced to a quite considerable extent and my new domino game offers a far greater number of possibilities of modes of playing than had been possible with dominoes of the usual kind. Moreover, the new game may be'played according to any desired rules which, however, do not form part of my invention.
The main value of my invention, as has above been indicated, consists therein that the dominoes by reason of the three fields thereon may be laid down on the play-surface in the form of a grid with rows crossing each other in perpendicular direction so that the laid down dominoes always surround empty squares i which remain free on the play-surface or table, thereby considerably facilitating the overseeing of the game during p ay ng.
By this it will be possible to lay down, for instance, all dominoes shown in Fig. 1 on a relatively very narrow play-surface without diminishing the possibility of overseeing the game, thus permitting playing children to overlook very easily the different possibilities of laying down a new domino beside one already on the play-surface.
The dominoes when put together during playing will form so-to-say a grid in connection with the free squares 1 which are each surrounded by four dominoes, that is the dominoes laid down on the play-surface form vertical and horizontal rows crossing each other and always leave free a square field in strict order, sequence and distance in longitudinal as well as in transverse direction.
I claim:
A rectangular domino piece having three square fields arranged in a straight line.
SCI-IUBERT, PHILIPP.
