Description
J. W. CRAIG. Door-Check.
No. 198,931. Patented Jan. 8,1878.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN W. CRAIG, OF KIRKWOOD, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD HIS V RIGHT TO RICHARD H. GORRELL, OF SAME PLACE.
IM PROVEMENT IN DOOR-CHECKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 198,931 dated January 8, 1878; application filed October 16, 18 77.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. CRAIG, of Kirkwood, in the county of Warren, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door Stops and Bolts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable othersskilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention consists in a novel combination of spring-rod, wheel, and plate, having a tubular projection, with vertical and lateral slots, to be used as an attachment to doors, whereby the door, when open, may be retained in any desired position, and when closed may be securely locked. The device canalso be adjusted so as not to interfere in any manner with the opening or closing of the door, all as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a doorway and door having my improved device attached thereto, said device being shown in position to retain the door in a particular position when open.
I Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same, the device being shown in position when used as a lock to prevent the opening of the door from the outside; and Fig. 3 is a similar view, with the device adjusted so as not to lock or interfere with the free movement of the door upon its hinges.
Referring to the parts by letters, A represents a door-frame, and B a door, of any ordinary construction; 0, the threshold-board, andD the floor of a room or hall. E is a recess formed in the threshold-board, or in any suitable and convenient position in the flooring. This recess may be protected or covered by a suitable metal plate, F, having a slot, f, formed through it, preferably of cruciform form, as shown by Fig. 1 of the drawmgs.
G is a plate. having a tubular projection, 9, formed with or secured to it. The plate G is securely fastened to the door by means of screws or other suitable fastening. The tube g is formed with a vertical slot, g, and also with a horizontal slot, 9.
H is a rod, which passes through the tube- 9, itslower end being provided with an antifiiction wheel, I, which is journaled between the forked lower end of the rod. J is a handle, which is secured to the rod, and projects When it is not desired to lock the door, or to retain it in any desired position when open, the handle J is used to push up the rod H until the former comes opposite to the horizontal slot 9. The rod is then turned into the slot, and the wheel I will then be held free from contact with the floor, the door being free to turn upon its hinges.
When it is desired to use the device for holding the door in any desired position when open, the handle J is used to turn the rod, so
that said handle will again project through the vertical slot g. The door being open, the spring K forces the wheel I into contact with the floor, so that the friction between the floor and the wheel will hold the door in any desired position when open.
With the rod and wheel in the position last described, the door will become locked when closed, the wheel passing into the recess E, as clearly shown by Fig. 2 of the drawings.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein-described adjustable door stop and fastener, consisting of the plate G, having tubular projection 0, formed with vertical slot 9' and lateral slot g, arranged to operate in combination with the spring-rod H K, having handle J and wheel I, and with the recess E of the door-sill, all substantially as and for the purpose specified. I
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature .in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN W. CRAIG.- lVitnesses:
THOMAS MCKEE, B. F. SANFORD.
