WM. W. WADE, 0F LNGMEADOW, AD CI-IAS. BURNHAM, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSA- CHUSETTS. v
LAMP ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 19,885, dated April 6, 1858.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that we, IVM. W. IVADE, of Longmeadow, and CHARLES BURNHAM, of Springfield, county of Hampden, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lamp Attachments for Burning Fluids; and we do hereby declare that the same is described and represented in the following specification and drawing clear and plain;and to enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same we will proceed to describe the construction'and operation, referring to the drawings, in which the same letters indicate like parts in each of the figures.
The nature of our improvement consists in the mode .of manufacturing lamp attachments, in so thorough and substantial a manner, that they shall be more durable and less affected by the heat of the blaze, and more symmetrical in its appearance.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation; Fig. 2, is a section of the same; Fig. 3, is aV horizontal section,
A, is a wick tube; B, is a spindle having rucked surface wheels fixed thereon, working into the wick tube for the purpose of raising or depressing the wick; C, is the base which is fitted or secured on to the lamp; D, is a deflector; E, E, are series of perforated holes so as to allow a free admission and circulation of air.
In Figs. l, and 2, F, is a groove in the chimney band; G, is a flange on the deflector of such size as to allow it to slide closely down the inside of the chimney band into the groove F; and then by the use of dies `or other mechanical tools the flange is eX- panded so as to closely fill the groove, in-
stead of fastening in the ordinary way by soldering, whereby they become perfectly useless from the heat of the blaze or flame; or subject to constant expense of repairing and keeping in order for use. H, is a hinge joint secured to the chimney band I, projecting inside and made fast to the shell by a wire through the hinge, the ends of which lay in the recess of a bead, so that the outside has a smooth appearance. J, is a wire spring for the purpose of holding the band secure on the shell. The object and advantage of this arrangement is to produce a more perfect article, with far less liability of getting out of order, as they are always liable to do, where the deflector is soldered in; also to produce a more symmetrical appearance by making the projecting portion of the hinge on the inside, and attaching a spring to keep the rim secure in its place.
We are aware that deflectors and chimney bands have been used, also that chimney bands have been attached to the top of the shell by hinges projecting outward, and also, that springs have been used as fasteners for various other and different purposes than here described. Such we do not claim. But
Securing the deflector G, into the groove` F, of the chimney band I, the said band being hinged to the lamp cap, the whole constructed and operating in the manner set forth. n
