VISE-.ANVIL FOR REPAIRING T-RAILS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 19,861, dated April 6, 1858i.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that we, SANFORD MAsoN and EDWARD M. DAvIs, of Michigan City, in Laporte county and State of Indiana, have invented a new and valuable Mode of Constructing a vise-Anvil or T-Rail Block; and we declare the following to be a full and exact description of our method of constructing the same.
The parts consist of first, a bed piece; 2d, what we term the locking jaw, 3d, the lever jaw, and 4, a lever.
We first refer to the accompanying drawings as part of this specification.
Figure l represents the bed-piece which is constructed of cast iron and may be of any material suitable for such purpose. It consists alone of a single piece of cast iron of suitable thickness and proportion, at one end of which is cast or otherwise constructed a hali circle box or groove, letters a a. 'At right angles with this groove we construct a guide bar or guard, letters b ZJ.
Fig. 2 represents the jaws of anvil or block in upright position and are each cast entire. The one to which the lever may be attached we call the lever jaw and the other the locling jaw. On the lower and outer edge of the lever-jaw we construct a halferound guard, letter c, extending the whole length of the jaw, exactly to iit and revolve in box or groove of bed-piece, letters a 0 and a similar guard on the lower and inner side of the lever aw exactly to lit and revolve in groove of locking jaw as represented at letter gsee last named guard at letter d. At right angles with these guards and in the center of the under side of both jaws, we construct a groove seen in Fig. 3, letters e e, exactly to receive and fit on guard of bed-piece, letters b. rIhis groove terminates at outer side of lever-jaw in a mortise, letter F, Fig. 3, into which the lever is put when in use. In locking jaw Fig. 2, we construct a half-round groove or boX, letter g, exactly to fit and receive guard on lever jaw, letter cZ*thus locking the jaws together, while the grooves and guards on bed-piece and under side of the jaws support and retain the several places.

On the upper side of the jaws as seen in Fig. 2, we construct the lips of the vise-anvil, letters 7L 7L, of such form and shape as to eX-v actly receive and fit a T-rail bar in the position in which it is placed when in use. grooves on the lever aw are designed to fit the different positions of the T-rail, letters c' z'. Now lay down the bed-piece, guard and groove of the same, up-setthe lever jaw thereon inserting the guard of the bedpiece in groove of the jaw and inserting the halfround guard in boX or half round groove, letters c @,-put the lever in mortise F. Now place the locking jaw on bedpiece groove over the guard-then bear downon the lever and lock the jaws by inserting the groove g, over the guard Z-remove the hand from lever; the vise anvil or T-rail block is complete, Fig. 5.
The anvil is used by bearing down on the lever, thus throwing the awsapart so as to admit the rail. The force removed from the lever the weight of the bar forces the jaws back in their place and the grooves guard and lock on the jaws and bed-piece holds the whole rmly in place.
Having thus fully described the nature and object of our invention what we claim therein as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. The combination of the guard c, on the lever aw, and the groove a, in the bed piece, with a raising mechanism for raising up said lever jaw substantially as herein described.
2. We also claim in combination the projection d, on the lever aw and the groove g, on the locking jaw, so that when the jaws are raised up they will open to receive the rail, and when released will catch and rmly hold themselves and the rail to the bedpiece `substantially as described.
