COMBINED CLEANER AND LIQUID DISPENSING APPARATUS Filed June 15; 1954 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 gill We a l. I
INVENTOR 774aA4AfIEfPPA BY j I ATTORNEY Patented Nov. 20, 1934 UNITED PATENT orrios 4 claims.
The invention relates to apparatus for dispensin-g' liquids,- such as beverages, by a gaseous medium under suitable pressure; and more par tioularly to a fitting for use therewith and whereiby cleaning operations, more especially with referenee to the dispenser apparatus, may conveni ently be conducted when required.
The invention has for anobject a sirnple and effective fitting element which may be introduced in the piping connections of the usual dispens ingsystem and whereby not only may cleaning thereof be expeditiously effected, asby merely turning of a hand-wheel or like element, but the dispensing of the liquid may siniilarl-y be provided for through the said f tting. The desired cleaning operation includes the flushing out of the dispensing apparatus and liquid sup: ply' vessel with water and, if desired, also with a suitable cleaning liquid; and thereafter the supply of gaseous medium under pressure for dispensing of the liquid may be reestablished.
In carrying out the invention; there is provided a fitting or control member comprising two p'arall'el' pipes which are connected together by one or more transverse valve casings, depending upon the number of supply vessels to be controlled; Each pipe is sealed at one endand the two pipes are adapted for connection at their other endsrespectively to a source or gas under suitable pressure and tea source of water supply.
A valve casing, furthermore, is provided withtwo' ports adapted to be placed respectively in communication with ports or" the said pipes, the two former ports terminating in a common dis charge pipe which is adapted for connection to the supplying vessel for the liquid to" be dispensed;-
In the valve casing there is arranged, also, arotatable duplex plug which is provided with through ports angularly' displaced with reference -,to' each other" about the axis or rotation of the plug as well as being displacedaxially along said plug.- Each port is adapted for registry at its opposite ends with its corresponding pipe and easing ports when the plug is properly turned,

Thus there ma be supplied alter-y nativly rrcsifi ni e said vessel in the'fitting' the cleaner composition or water,- sintabi hand wneeispi like infeans are provided for Operating the difirentvalve plugs and may provided with sui'table indici a to assist in their oper manipulation. 1
The riature' of the invention, noweven 111pe p be understood when described in connection with 76" the accompanying drawings, in which V Fig". 1 hows f om evanonandpart ve tic'a l secnpn a liquid dispensing installation at; body'ing' the novel fitting rn'enfibe'r n Fig. 2 is an end elevation, partly in section 73*: and on an nlarged scale, or, the never fitting riieriiber and assoeiatd liqiif supply vessel.
l 31is an underneath 'ew ofthe, said'fif: ting and suppi vesse connection, partly in sec: non and on an' enlarged sdale; and ig, 4 a transv erse vertical section taken on the line e lr Referring tdthe drawings; 10 designates a; dis} periser cabinet e'r'rib'odying the" inser s got 11, tray 12 and the pipers through whic: he & liquid tonb'e' dispensed: is rieceived, the 1 uidl passing through the pipe into the dispenser and being mari uana and drawn foi use in we'll-"known or" special manner, the invention be ing concerned only with the means'wh'erebys'uch 5 dispensing system may be flushed and cleaned as by raiding" water' and/or another c an'in'g liquid therethro'ugh in" place of 13H usual liquid dispensed, will be hereinafter more fully set forth. The liquid to be ispensed received the u sll al mallfilr fiom the Bottom Of a vessel 61f keg 1 5 through a hos e connection or pipe 16 edmmumcann' with the" supply pipe 13; It is preferred to Provide at' leasttwo of these vessels so that when" the Contents of oneib'eo'ome exbanned, the other may ir'n'mediately e placed in} service, through the usual switching valve 1 7" iifl'tlodllfid their the supply 151159 13 The liquid, asa" beverag is supplied frorii a" kegor other container ,15thro-ugh the drawing and cooling device 10, and adapted to be dis; pensed therefrom through the applicatioriio f a gas under suitable pressure, for example; earb'bnic' acid gas taken from the" tank 18" and in tlodl l cd" into" the k'g lililoug h' the" 1 9 pensed, but there is interposed in the line a fitting member shown more particularly in Figs. 2 to 4, inclusive, and through which also the cleaning "of. the dispensing system may be accomplished.
sealed at one end as at 22 and 23, respectively. The opposite ends of these pipes are adapted to a source of water supply, respectively. Thus, the open end 24 may be connected with the'tank 18 and the end 25 with apipe 26 supplying water under a suitable head. i
The two said pipes 20 and 21 are connected together by ,a transverse valve casing 30, in the present instance two such valve casings being provided to accommodate the supply from the two supply vessels 15. A plug 31 fits a valve casing for rotation therein and is provided with two through ports 32 and 33, said ports being.
angularly displaced with reference to each other about the axis of rotation of the plug and also displaced axially along the plug. They are designed, furthermore, to cooperate with ports 34 and 35, respectively, located in the pipes 20 and 21 and with opposite outlets 36 and 37 of the valve casing, the two outlets 36 and 37 uniting to a common outlet 38 which is adapted for connection to the bung 19 through the pipe or hose 39. I v
The aforesaid arrangement admits of the delivery of either gas under pressure or water under suitable head to a vessel 15 and in accordancewith the position of the said plug 31, one M source of supply beingcut off by the plug while theother is delivered through its corresponding port. 1 A hand-wheel 40, bearing suitable indicia 41, may be provided upon a plug for conveniently rotatingv the'same and, for affording m the desired control.
A plug, furthermore, may be yieldingly held to its casing by means of a spring 42 coiled about its projecting axial stem 43, being interposed between" a nut 44 and a non-rotatable washer 45 slidable on the said stem; Thiswasher carries also a number of balls 46 designed to register in sockets 47 of the casing flange '48 for locating positively a plug in the desired position as shown by the indicia,
J3 By the foregoing arrangement, when a vessel 15 has been emptied and it is desired to fiush out thedispenser, 10 as well as the vessel 15 itself, the gas supply is out 01f temporarily by correspondingly rotating the appropriate handwheel 40 which is set then to a position for admitting water to the system for flushing out the same, first filling the vessel 15 to the desired extent and then reapplying the gas under pres- I sure by suitable manipulation of the said valve.
Li 1 In order to conserve the gas in case the same is carbon dioxide, a supply of air under pressure may be provided through a supply pipe 50, there being introduced in .the connection a valve 51 and in the connection from the tank 18 a valve """52 to temporarily shut off the latter and admit 'airfrom the former.
"If it be desired, in addition to the aforesaid flushing action by means of water, to also ap- .ply a cleaning liquid such as a soda solution, or
This member comprises two pipes 20 and 21 arranged preferably parallel to each other and apparatus including a supply vessel for the liquid for connection to the source of gas supplyand prising two parallel pipes, each pipe being sealed apparatus including a supply vessel for-the liquid other powdered or liquid composition, etc., there may be interposed between the fitting and the source of water supply a vessel 55 for receiving a charge of the cleaner liquid. A valve 56 provided in the water supply pipe 26 will then be operated to cut off temporarily the fiow of water to the said fitting (pipe 21); and the cleaning composition may be poured into the vessel to be discharged from the bottom outlet 57 into the said fitting.
