' WILLIAM BRIsBANE, 0F PHILADELPHIA, rENNsYLvANI IMPROVEMENT IN ASBESTUS' CIGARETTES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 198,075, dated December 11, 1877 application filed May 19, 1877. r
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM BRISBANE, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented anew and valuable Improvement in Asbestus Oigarettes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figiues of refereu ce marked thereon.
Figure 1 of thedrawings is a representation of a perspective view of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section thereof.
This inventionhas relation to improvements in cigarettes.
The object of the invention is to devise means for doing away with the rolling up of the tobacco in paper wrappers, and to obviate the injurious effects produced by the burning of said wrappers on the health of the smoker.
The nature of the invention consists in an asbestns tube of suitable size, adapted to be charged with tobacco, and to beused as a pipette, as hereinafter shown and described.
In the annexed drawings, the letter A desigsheathing or tobaccoholder. This is formed out of sheet-asbestns, or asbestns paper, by winding pieces of the material around a round former of suitable dimensions, and then pasting, gluing, or
otherwise securing the contiguous edges together. One end of this tube maybe tapered, as shown at a, and provided with a mouthpiece, b, of any suitable material. It will also be generally provided with a strengthening band or bands, 0, at its end. v
The smoking-tube thus formed cannot be affected by the burning of the tobacco, being incombustible, and, owing to the peculiar nature of asbestns, no cakin g of the burned or partiallyburned tobacco takes place in the inside of the tube. Consequently, when the charge is consumed, the smoker need only blow through ,the tube to clean it perfectly and rid it of all smell. The tube will also hold the ashes, and
prevent them from falling upon and defacing the carpet, floors, or other objects.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, a cigarette-holder composed of an asbestns tube, A, provided with a mouth-piece, B, at the rear end, and a band, 0, at the front end, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM BRISBANE.
