EMIL LORENZ 1777" a/m/Er Patented May 15, 1934 MARKER Emil Lorenz, Berlin, Germany Application August 22, 1931, Serial No. 558,759 In Germany April 9, 1930 2 Claims.
This invention has reference generally to improvements in a marking arrangement and more particularly to a colored marking strip used in combination with a loose leaf binder and fastening means for retaining documents therein.
It is the primary aim and object of the present invention to provide a device of the above character whereby dates, terms and the like are rendered visible on the files or paper binders, the colored marking strip being fastened Within the file and adapted to project beyond the edge of the file thereby indicating in a clearly visible manner the expiration of the term on which the file is due for attention a point that was heretofore possible only by using card indices which necessitated the purchase of special filing cabinets and incidental work in connection therewith.
More particularly the invention consists in the provision of a novel marking strip having certain 20 optical features for use on files wherein terms and dates are to be controlled and in addition the manner of fastening the strip in the file.
Other objects as well as the nature, characteristic features and scope of the invention will be more readilly apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the claims forming a part of this specification.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a front elevational View of the marker,
Fig. 2 is a similar View of a modified form thereof,
Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the marker of Fig. 2 fastened within a loose leaf binder or filing cover, the covering being in open position,
Fig. 4 is a perspective view with the cover in a closed position, and
Fig. 5 is a side View of a slightly modified form of the marker.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawing, there is provided a colored strip 6 the fastening of which is eifected in a loose leaf binder or the like by engaging the aperture a over the fastening means of the binder. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 2 two apertures a are provided for engagement about the prongs of a double pronged fastener such as indicated at d in Fig. 3 for retaining letters or leaves in the binder b, 0. Where there are two apertures a as in Fig. 2 the distance between the same corresponds to the distance between the prongs d. When the strip e is engaged with a fastener 12 as shown in Fig. 3 the outer portion f of the strip extends beyond the edge of the binder or cover and also beyond the usual index tab 71. carried by the back of the file b as shown in Fig. 3. As shown in Fig. 4 the cover 0 of the binder is in a closed position.
Each marker e consists of an inner portion or and an outer or lower portion j, which latter when in its position of use, projects beyond the lower edges of the back I) and cover 0 of the binder and also beyond the index tab h. Obviously these markers may be of different colors to indicate different months so that when in use in a file cabinet the clear visibility of the edge of the marker will indicate the termination of the period on which the matter is due for attention.
In the arrangement shown in Fig. 5 instead of providing the apertures a and a for fastening the markers in position a hook a" is fastened to the inner portion of the marker strip e and is adapted for engagement over the upper edge of the binder or filing cover.
It is believed in view of the foregoing that a further detailed description of the invention is entirely unnecessary.
Likewise it is believed that the advantages of the invention will be readily apparent.
Having thus fully described the invention what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:-
1. The combination with a loose leaf binder, of a fastening means for retaining documents therein and an elongated flexible narrow strip of a chosen color, and provided with an opening, said means detachably passing through said opening and said strip being of such length as to extend from said fastening means and be exposed at one end of said binder.
2. The combinations of a filing cover, a pronged fastener for engaging and retaining letters in the cover, and an elongated flexible narrow strip of a chosen color and of such a length as to project beyond the lower edge of the filing cover and having perforations therein corresponding to the distance between the prongs of the fastener, said perforations detachably receiving the prongs.
