This invention relates to electrical equipment and particularly pertains to 'a connecter device for electrical conductors.
It is the principal object or" the present invention to provide a simple and inexpensive connecter by means of which a plurality of service wires may be expeditiously and securely con= nected to a, main conductor.
In carrying the invention into practice, the connecter comprises a body which is substanu tially aparallelepiped in form and which is pro-v vided with a. longitudinal opening for receiving the main conductor. The body is also formed with openings which extend transversely into the sides of the body for the reception of the service wires. In one surface of the body a. plurality of set screws are threaded which-are in register with the longitudinal and transverse openings, one set screw being provided for each opening. rllhese set screws are utilized to -iirmly clamp the wires projecting into said openingsto the connecter and thereby form a connection between all the wires.
One form which the invention may assume is exemplified in the following description and illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. l is a perspective view of the preferred iorm of my improved connecter.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view through the connecter. A
Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawing, 10. indicates a body which is substantially a parallelepiped in form. This body is solid and is formed with an opening which extends longitudinally and centrally therethrough as lndicated'by the numeral 1l. This opening is circular in cross-section'and is of a diameter to receive a main conductor 12.
Formed transversely through the body4 is a plurality of openings le which are also circular in cross-section and which intersect the opening l1. These transverse openings 14 are spaced apart longitudinally of the body l0 and are of gradually increasing diameters. That is to say, the opening lic 4is of the smallest diameter while the opening leb is of the largest diameter. The remaining openings are of a gradually increasg ing diameter between the opening Maand the opening leb.
In one side of the body is formed a plurality of tapped openings 15. Two of these openings or those'indicated at 16 intersect the main opening 11. There are provided two tapped openings 15 for each transverse opening 14. These two openings are arranged one adjacent each side edge of the body. Each opening 15 and 16 receives a set screw which is of suicient length that it may be projected through the tapped (Cl. wr-32%) opening receiving it to engage a conductor projected within the opening in the body with which said set screw registers. y
lit is desired to point out that occasionally it is desired `to run from four to six service wires from a single main conductor or jumper and it is for this purpose that my present device is intended. In other words, if it is desired to run a plurality of service wires from a main conductor, the main conductor is inserted through the longitudinal opening ll in the body 10 and the set screws entering the tapped openings lo are set up to tightly clamp the main conductor to the body 10. The ends of the service wires are then projected into the openings ld which extend inwardly from opposite sides of the body 10. The
set screws in the tapped openings 15 mayl then be taken up to rmly clamp the service wires to the body and form. a secure mechanical connel tion between the service wires and the main con ductor.
Itis obvious that by means of the present invention, it will be unnecessary to coil the ends oi the service wires about the main conductor and then solder the joint as in prior practice. It is mani-s fest therefore that my present invention provides a simple and inexpensive device for expeditiously effecting such a connection.
inasmuch as the openings 14 service wires are oi clierent diameters', the connccter will properly receive service wires or different gauge.
While I have shown the preferred form of my invention, it is to be understood that various changes may be made -in its construction by those.
skilled in the art without departing from. the spirit ci the invention as dened in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A connecter' comprisinga substantially solid body which is substantially a parallelepiped in form, said body having an opening extending centrally and longitudinally therethrough of a diameter to receive a main conductor, said, body being formed with a plurality of transverse openings extending transversely through the body and intersecting said longitudinal opening and capable of receiving service conductors. said openings being spaced apart longitudinally of the body and being of progressively increasing di@ .ameters, set screws threaded through the body at right angles to the axis of said openings, two set screws being provided for each transverse opening and located adjacent opposite ends thereof and adapted to register therewith to secure conductors therein, and two set screws being provided for the longitudinal opening and being located adjacent opposite ends thereof and in register therewith for securing the main conductor inthe body.
