WITNESSES ZKU.' g
Patented Oct. 3l, 1933 UNITED gSTATES PATENT OFFICE This invention relates to animproved single package cup, the object being to provide an improved structure wherein a compartment is provided in a cup capable of receiving an article.
Another object of the invention is to provide in a cup a'compartment in the bottom portion of the cup, the structure being such that the compartment is substantially sealed so that when any substance is placed in the compartment, it is kept in a sanitary manner until ready for use.
An additional object, more specifically, is to provide a cup which has a normally sealed compartment and which lends itself to the reception of medicine so that the cup may present a container flor a mouthwash, the closure for the compartment acting in the combined capacity of a closure plate and spoon, so that when removed it may be used for stirring a medicine and liquid mixedv therewith.
An additional object is to provide a cup having a division plate for dividing the cup into a plurality f compartments, the plate being formed with a handle extending to a point exteriorly of the cup, so that it may be readily removed and then used as a spoon or stirring device.
In the accompanying drawing,-
Figure l is a vertical sectional view through a cup disclosing an embodiment of the invention.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the division plate and spoon illustrated in Figure l.
Referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals, l indicates a cup and 2 a combined division plate and spoon. The cup 1 may be made from paper, or other material, but, preferably, some very inexpensive material, and when it is formed, it isv preferably tapered so that several cups may be telescoped together, as indicated by the dotted lines 1'. Near the bottom of the cup is provided an annular groove 3 into which the division member 2' is fitted, the contact being rather tight so that division member 2 may be held in place by friction and also may substantially seal the compartment 4, and thereby protect the medicine 5. The division member 2 is provided with a handle 2" so as to complete the combined structure of division plate and spoon, the handle 2" extending preferably to a point ex teriorly of the cup 1 so that it may be pulled outwardly at any time.
When manufacturing the device the cut is formed as illustrated in Figure 1 wherebya small compartment is made at the bottom of the cup, the same being closed by the cover or plate 2', while the handle 2" extends to a point above the body of the cup. The compartment 4 may receive an article of any kind or a plurality of small articles. When the device is to be used with medicine, the same is arranged as indicated by the numeral 5, and when the medicine is to be used, the handle 2" is grasped and the cover (Cl. 20G-47) plate 2' is removed. The water or other liquid is then poured into the medicine and it is stirred by the combined spoon and division plate, after which it is used in thek desired manner. The material 5 may be medicine as just mentioned or may be any other desired substance. It may be in the form of a solid cake, in the form of powder, paste or a liquid, as preferred, because the resilient action of the side walls of the cup pinch the division or cover plate 2' suiciently to provide a desired seal. vThe material 6 partly extends around the edge of the plate 2 and pinches thesame more or less so that the compartment is sealed closed and the plate is' held in position with some appreciable tension.
One of these devices may be carried on a trip or a large number of them may be telescoped together for-the trip, or for use in the home. Also, the devices may be used in vending machines or elsewhere, and in all places where it is used,
a sanitary cup is provided with the medicine 5V substantially sealed and thereby fully protected. When it is desired to use the cup, the handle 2 is grasped and pulled upwardly so as to remove the combined spoon and division plate. After the division plate 2 has been removed, the contents in the chamber may be mixed with water or other liquid and used to wash the mouth as a mouthwash or may be vutilized in a desired manner. If the contents is some other material, as, for instance, cocoa, hot water can be added and then the water and cocoa stirred so that the beverage may be properly mixed for consumption. It is also evident that the device could be utilized for many other purposes including the use by barbers or others in shaving. When used in this way a shaving cake or powder is placed in the compartment 4 and when it is to be used, the division plate is removed and the desired amount Iof water applied.
If desired, during the manufacture of the device, the cup could be covered by parailln or otherwise treated to be perfectly sanitary, and when sold in packages of six or more, they will re-' main untouched except by the one who breaks the wrapper.
I claimtv A cup of the character described comprising a flexible body having an annular interior groove, an article arranged on the bottom of the cup below said groove, and a combined division member and spoon positioned with the handle portion extending beyond the side wall of the cup and the spoon portion acting as a closure fitting into said groove, said handle at its juncture with the spoon portion, being offset inwardly from the' periphery so as to allow the edge of the spoon portion to fit into said groove substantially at all points.
