BABY GARMENT Caroline Sork, Philadelphia, Pa.

2 Claims.
My invention relates to baby garments, and it relates more particularly to baby garments into which an infant child may easily be put, and from which it may be as easily removed, and
which shall keep the childs body warm, protected and comfortable under all conditions.
It is an object of my invention to provide a garment for an infant child, which shall enable the child to be easily placed into and removed from the garment.
Another object of my invention is to provide a baby garment which shall insure the comfort, warmth and bodily protection of the child whether the latter is sleeping, or is being carried about, and which at the same time will give the child the maximum freedom of movement.
A further object of my invention is to provide a warm comfortable baby garment which shall cover the childs body to a varying degree;- from an all open to an all closed front.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a baby garment which shall be easily undone so that it may be washed as simply as a small blanket and as easily put together again after the garment is cleaned.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists generally of a baby garment comprising a Warm, soft fabric web folded into a bag, the folds of which are detachably secured in a position as by a ribbon or other attaching means; having a neck opening in the front face of the bag along the longitudinal medianline thereof, and having two arm openings on opposite sides of the longitudinal median line, said arm openings being suitably covered by the folds of the garment to protect the arms of the child; a slit extending downwardly along the median line from the neck opening towards the foot of the garment, and a flexible slide fastener adapted to open and close said slit to permit the insertion and removal of the child therethrough, into and from the garment, and to open or close the garment to varying degrees, as desired.
For the purpose of illustrating my invention, I have shown in the accompanying drawings forms thereof which are at present preferred by me, since the same have been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of the instrumentalities as herein shown and described.

Figure 7 represents a view in section on line 7-7 of Figure 6.
Figure 8 represents a front plan view of a baby garment of a modified construction embodying my invention.
Figure 9 represents a front plan view similar to the view shown in Figure 8, with a child positioned within the garment.
Figure 10 represents a view in section along the line 10-10 of Figure 9.
Figure 11 represents a view in section along the line 11-11 of Figure 9.
According to my present invention, I provide a warm, soft fabric web 10 of a generally rectangular outline, as illustrated particularly in Figure 1. Ifhis fabric is preferably washable and of wool 01' cotton, or a suitable mixture of both, and is of a soft blanket texture.
In forming the garment of my invention, the upper portion 11 of the fabric 10 is folded back along the line a of Figure 1, and the lower portion 12 is folded back along the line b thereof, so that the upper and lower portions 11 and 12 overlap each other in the rear of the garment,
cated in Figures 2, 3 and 4., and having potential body space 22 between the front face 20 and the rearward flaps 11 and 12 thereof.
A neck opening 19 is provided along the upper portion of the longitudinal median line of the outerfront face 20 of the garment 21, and is preferably a short distance. below the top edge a, thereof so that a child positioned within the garment may rest its head on the soft, warm padding supplied by the folds of the garment, as seen no particularly in Figures 5 and 6. This neck opening 19 opens into the body space 22 of the garment 21, and may be suitably lined, as by the silk edging material 23. v 5 Hand or arm openings 30 and 31 are provided on opposite sides of the longitudinal median line,- and are suitably positioned for comfortable use by the child. These hand openings may also be suitably lined, as by the silk' linings 32 and 33.
A slit 24 extends downwardly from the neck opening 19, along the face of the garment 21 to the foot thereof, and upwardly along the rear face 25 of the body space 22 an extent suitable for affording ready access to the child, and also for giving access to the inside of the garment.
A flexible slide fastener is operatively mounted in the slit 24, by sewing one of the pair of juxtaposed rows of metal links or scoopsfon each edge of the slit;-so that by sliding the operating slide up and down, the slit may be closed and opened, respectively, to any desired extent.
. Suitable flaps 28 and 29 shield the child from the fastener 35. g
Thus, for inserting the child into the garment, the operating slide 40, of the fastener 35 is moved down, and the side flaps 26 and 27 are rolled back, leaving the body space 22 open and accessible. After the child is put into the garment, the slit 24 is closed again by means of the flexible slide fastener, to the extent desired.
The side portions 13 and 14 of the garment 21 are then folded forward along the lines c and "(1 respectively, so as to lie on the front face 20 and to cover the childs arms or hands extending through the arm openings 30 and 31 respectively, giving each arm or hand a separate covered space 34 in which to move or play. The side portions '13 and 14 are thereafter secured in this position by some suitable means such as the ribbons 17 and 18 attached to the side edge 15 and 16 respectively.
By this means, the childs body is completely covered, except for its head portion, by a warm, soft, garment which permits a free and unhampered movement of the child within the garment, an set insures complete protection from exposur at cold.
When it is desired to clean the garment, the ribbons 1'7 and 18 are untied and the garment unfolded, leaving the garment in a generally rectangular open or flat form, which may be simply cleaned. After cleaning, the garment may again be assembled and tied as herein above described, and the garment is then again ready for use.
The advantages of my novel baby garment are numerous and reside, inter alia, in the ease and simplicity with which a child may be inserted into, or taken out of said garment and the ease with which the inner portion of said garment may be reached.
Another advantage of my novel baby garment is the simplicity with which said baby garment may be undone for washing and as easily put together again after the cleaning.
A still further advantage of my novel baby garment is the combination provided in a single baby garment of a warm baby covering which is not binding or tight, three compartments, one for the body and legs, and one for each arm, to permit the child to move about in perfect comfort and yet without the danger of its throwing off any of its body or arm covering. Thus, the childs arms, while free to move about, are loosely covered and thus protected. 7 V
e of Figure 1 and the opposite corresponding In Figures 8 to 11, inclusive, I have illustrated a modified construction of a baby garment embodying my invention.
In this form, I provide a fabric web similar to that illustrated in Figure 1 and herein above described.
In forming the garment, the upper portion 11 is folded back along the line "a", and the lower portion 12 is folded backward along the line b, so that the upper and lower portions 11 and 12 respectively, overlap each other in the rear of the garment. The garment is now in the general position illustrated in Figures 2, 3 and 4.
The side 13 is then folded back along the line side 14 is folded back along the line "1" thereof,
so that the edges 15 and 16 of the sides 13 and 14 respectively, generally meet each other in the rear of the garment, producing a heavy, multi-ply padding for the back of the garment. The ribbon 1'7 attached to the edge 15 is thereafter tied to the ribbon 18 attached to the edge 16, thereby securing the folds in the garment against opening or otherwise being undone. In place of the ribbon.
any other suitable means, for detachably securing the folds of the garment, may be used.
In this manner, a body space 22 is formed, having a warm body covering completely surrounding it, and having also a soft and substantial padding in its back portion, so that the baby 36 in said body space 22 may be carried about in the garment and may safely and comfortably be laid down on any ordinary surface without harming or annoying the baby;--the padding in the back serving to break the effect of the hardness of the surface, and the body covering serving to maintain the comfortable warmth of the child.
The particular advantage of this modified form of my novel baby garment is the combination pro vided in a single baby garment of a warm baby covering with a soft but substantial, multiple padding beneath the baby and extending the full length of the baby's body to permit the child to be safely and comfortably carried about and as comfortably laid down;said garment being formed of a single web of fabric demountably assembled.
.I am aware that the invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the spirit or essential attributes thereof, and I therefore desired the present embodiments to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, reference being had to the appended claims rather than to the foregoing description I to indicate the scope of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I 180 hereby claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A demountable baby garment comprising a fabric web folded along the two sides and top and bottom, into a clothing bag, the folds of which are detachably secured to each other, said folded or assembled bag having on its front face a neck opening along the longitudinal median hne thereof and positioned below the top folded edge of said garment a distance suitable for permitting 14:0 a childs head to rest on the folded portion of said garment, and two hand openings located on opposite sides of said median line, said hand openings being protectively covered by a portion of the folds of said fabric web, and having also a 1 slit extending downwardly from the neck opening towards the foot of said garment, and a flexible closure fastener operatively related to said gleittto open and close the same to any desired exima es 2. emmniable baby gamen'i'; mgai'isim a .fabrfi-c web misled 'a'z'ong the We sides; zm tsp am. hattom; into a. clothing bag, the iwlds Y m which are fietachably secured m eaah gamer,
