Application September 27, 1932 Serial No. 635,070
4 Claims.
This invention relates to an article of apparel; more particularly, to a vest construction.
It is an object of my invention to provide a vest or waistcoat construction, made of suiting fabric.
to be worn as the waistcoat of the usual suit of clothes, and made of similar or matching fabric, and put on by the wearer as a slip-over garment. It is contemplated by my invention to provide a slip-over waistcoat in which the sections thereof, comprising the front and rear, are made of suiting materials, finished or tailored along formfitting lines, and provide fastening means to hold the garment in proper form-fitting position upon the wearer, and permit of its being put on as a slip-over garment by forming a portion thereof, at one side, with fasteningelements in the nature of a slide fastener, cooperating with a belt portion to hold the garment along the waistline in snug and form-fitting engagement.
Other objects of my invention reside in the provision of a waistcoat characterized by an uninterrupted front, and which may be put on as a slip-over garment, and including provision for slipping the garment over the larger dimensions of the torso, as the shoulders, in the nature-of a slitted portion to one side of the garment, the
fastening means serving to continuously unite the slitted portion, to draw the garment overthe waistline of the wearer in attractive, snug and comfortable fit.
Other objects of my invention reside in the provision of a waistcoat of enhanced ornamental appearance, characterized by a continuous front, and which may be put on over the head of the r wearer, as a slip-over garment, made of inelastic or suiting fabric and which may be given a formfitting or snug tailored effect, of a continuous, uninterrupted frontal effect, the constricted'portion of the garment adjacent the waistline being provided with fastening means to permit the garment being slipped over the head and shoulders of the wearer, to don or remove the garment, by including a slide fastener connecting means, and further providing a protective covering for said slide fastener, to avoid engagement of the metallic parts of the fastener with the coat worn over said waistcoat, the protective covering or edging being drawn into, and held in covering position by a resilient strap holding the slide cidental displacement, and at the same time holding the protective edging in position.
To attain these objects and such further objects as may appear herein or be hereinafter pointed out, I make reference to the accompanying drawing, forming a part hereof, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of my device;
Figure 2 is a side elevation thereof;
Figure 3 is an enlarged detail of the fastening connection;
fastener actuating means in position against ac- Figure 4 is a section taken on the line 4--4 of Figure 2.
Making reference to the drawing, it is contemplated by me to make a waistcoat construe-- tion 10 of the character known as a slip-over garment, and comprising a front section 11 formed with a neck portion 12, and armhole sections 13. The section 11 cooperates with a rear section 14 to form the waistcoat, the sections 11 and 14 being cut to provide a proper formfitting waiscoat.
The front section 11 and rear section 14 are both formed of a continuous piece of fabric to provide the front and rear portions in a continuous, uninterrupted outline. The front section 11 is seamed to the rear portion 14 at the shoulders 15 by the usual seaming operations. One side 16 serves as a seam-line and the parts 11 and 14 are stitched together at this point by the usual finishing operations, thereby providing a continuous armhole to the left side of the garment. To the right side of the garment, the sections 11 and- 14 are stitched together for a portion of the length beneath the armhole 13. At the seam-line 17, and extending down to the waistline of the garment, pleats 18 and 19 are formed to provide respectively, edges 20 and 21. The terminating edges 22 are connected to each other by a dart construction 23, leaving the remainder of the edges as an open slit from the dart 23 to the waistline.
To the underlayers of the pleats 18 and 19, and at a point spaced from the edges 20 and 21, there are afiixed complemental portions of slide fastener elements 24 positioned in relation to the edges 20 and 21 so that when the slide fastening elements are completely engaged, these edges will be brought into contacting relationship and completely cover the slide fastener elements 24. Cooperating with the slide fastener elements, there is provided a slide 25 of the usual construction. This has an operating member 26 pivotally connected at 2'7. The slide 25 has an orifice 26a exposing therethrough the slide fastening elements 24. The operating member 26 is provided with a pin 28 arranged to extend through the orifice 26a, when it is pivoted upwardly, as shown in Figure 4 and engages one of the slide elements 24, preventing the slide from movement along the edges of the slide elements 24. In the construction as provided, the sections 11 and 14 are preferably made of inelastic fabric, such as suiting material. This fabric is continued up to the edge 29, at which edge which terminates at the waistline, there is provided a waistband 30. This waistband 30 is preferably made of elastic material, such as obtained by a knitted, ribbed fabric. The waistband 30 terminates adjacent the slit formed by the edges 20 and 21, and at these portions, there are provided tabs 31 and 32. The tabs 31 and 32 are both connected to the edges 20 and 21 to draw these edges into position overlying the slide fastener elements 24. The slide elements are extended for a short distance below the tabs 31 and 32, to underly the same when the tabs 31 and 32 are connected with each other, and for this purpose, complemental snap fastener elements 33' and 34 are provided.
It will also be observed that a general enhanced appearance may be given to the garment, by providing at the frontal sections pocket members 35 and 36. With a garment as thus provided, and in order toput the same on and slip the garment over the head of the wearer, the slide 25 is moved to the upward extreme position. When so formed, the garment may readily be slipped on over the head of the wearer, the elastic band thus provided, permitting the garment, otherwise made of inelastic fabric, to readily slip over the shoulders. When positioned upon the wearer, the slide fastener is moved downwardly to the extreme position, moving the slide fastener elements into cooperating engaging relationship. When the extreme position is obtained, the operating member 26 is pivoted upwardly, and while in this position, the tabs 31 and 32 are fastened together in engaging relationship by the snap fastener elements 33 and 34. This action serves to hold the operating member 26 in the upward pivotal position, and thereby holds the slide against upward accidental movement which would release the slide fastener elements from engagement with each other. The engagement of the tabs 31 and 32 also draws the edges 20 and 21 in a position overlying the slide fastener elements, to thereby. prevent contact between the metallic parts of the slide fastener elements and the over garment worn by the wearer.
By the construction as provided, it will be observed that I have provided a waistcoat or vest construction which may be put on as a slip-over garment, and when constructed as described, has an exceedingly desirable and enhanced appearance, by presenting the waistcoat with a continuous and uninterrupted front area, and when the sections constituting the forward and rear sections are of form-fitting construction, the slide fastener formed at the slit to one side, immediately below the armhole, permits adjustment of the waistcoat into position to provide a snug fit. Futhermore, the slide and elastic band provided for the garment, permit an otherwise inelastic fabric, constituting the waistcoat, to be used for making a slip-over garment.
It will further be observed that by my construction, not only do I provide an exceedingly pleasing appearance for a waistcoat, which may be used as a sport jacket or part of a suit to be worn by men and boys beneath the outer jacket, but also permits a slide fastener element to be used at a portion of the garment which may come in contact with other overlying garments, such as a coat, without exposing the metallic portions thereof, and thereby further holding the fastener connection against accidental opening.
Having thus described my invention and illustrated its use, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A slip-over garment of the character described, comprising a continuous and uninterrupted front and rear section of substantially inelastic fabric, defining armholes and neck porfront, a slitted portion below one tions, seams to the side of said front and rear sections, one of said seams being completely connected for the full length thereof, the other of said seams being permanently connected only for a short length immediately below the armpit, leaving an open slit to the lower end or waist line of the garment, a slide fastener assembly for said slit extending from the connected point immediately below one armpit to the lower end or waist line of the garment, a connecting tab adjacent the lower end or waistline of the garment, a connecting tab adjacent the waistline, cooperating with said slide fastener assembly to hold said garment portions in form-fitting relationship, and independent fastening means for said tab.
2. A slip-over waistcoat of the character described, comprising a front section and a rear section of continuous, uninterrupted contour, tailored to provide a proper fit, said sections being. provided with cut out portions for the head and arms, forming continuously connected neck portion and armholes the fabric defining said armholes being positively connected, a slitted portion below one armhole, formed with edging made of the body portion of the fabric, slide fasteners for said slit connected to said fabric inwardly from said edging, said edging being of a size substantially completely to cover the cooperating portions of said slide fastener, a substantially resilient waistband, a fastening tab terminating adjacent said slitted portion, said tab having cooperating fastening elements, said tab being disposed to overly said edging and hold the same over said fastener elements.
3. A slip-over waistcoat of the character described comprising a front section and a rear section tailored to body fitting form, portions whereof are cut to provide a neck portion and armholes, the sections being united to opposite sides to provide continuously connected armholes, a slitted portion below one armhole running to the waistline, the edges of said slit being connected beneath one armhole forming a pleated portion, a slit formed in part of said pleated portion, slidefasteners for the edges of said slitted portion arranged to lie beneath the upper layer of the pleat, a resilient waistband having terminating tabs adjacent said slit, said tabs having cooperating fastening elements and being connected to hold the upper edges of said pleat to cover the slide fastening elements.
4. A slip-over garment of the character described, comprising a front section and a rear section tailored to body fitting form, portions whereof are cut to provide a neck portion and armholes, the sections being united to lateral sides to provide continuously connected armholes and present a continuous, uninterrupted armhole to the waistline, the edges of said slit forming portion being connected beneath one armhole forming pleated edges arranged to underly and be completely covered by the pleated edges in co-terminus engagement of said pleated edges, a waistband for said garment terminating into cooperating tabs adjacent said slit, a slide member for said slide fasteners including a pivotal operating member and means carried by said operating member engaging said slide fastener elements through said slide, said tabs cooperating with said slide operating member to hold said slide operating member in the pivotal position locking said slide in engagement with the slide fastener elements.
