Description
E. E. TROSS Juiy 18, 1933.
SLOT COVER Filed June 18, 1931 irnestlg. $055 IN VEN TOR. f
A TTORNEY Patented July 18, 1933 warren STATES mam ERNEST E. TROSS, OF YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO sLor COVER Application filed June 18,
This invention relates to slot covers. The principal ob]ect of this invention 15 to provide a slot cov r which is simple in construction and easily installed and removed. The. object for providing a slot cover is to pre vent chips or dirt from lodging in the ordinary in work tables or machine tools or or ates without stopping the flow or i'lraina e of coolant or cutting compounds and to place the work table in a condition for economical removal of cuttings, chips, or dirt.
A. further object of the device is to provide a cover that is snapped into position in order that the same may be held securely within the slot.
A further object is to provide wing members for the purpose of forming an overlapping oint of ends of sections of the slot cover.
A still further object is to provide slot covers of random lengths in order to cover T slots formed in work tables and the like.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Fig. 1 is an end view of the slot cover.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of a slot cover.
Figure 3 shows a side elevation of slot covers showing a portion of a work table in section.
Figure 4 is a perspective View of a portion of a work table showing an end in cross section.
By referring to the drawing it will be seen that there is provided a slot cover 1. This slot cover 1 is provided with down-turned diverging side members 2. The object of these down-turned diverging side members is to provide support for the'slot cover 1 and to hold the device in T slots 3 formed in a work table 4. In order that the down-turned 1931. Serial No. 545,246.
diverging side members 2 may function properly in the T slots 3 the device should be made of suitable spring material and preferably made of metal so that the device,
when sprung, will be held in the T slot under spring tension due to the diverging of the down-turned diverging side members 2.
It will be seen that each slot cover is provided with end wings 5. The purpose of these end wings 5 is to provide means for overlap- 6 ping of ends when sections of the slot covers are placed in the T slots Another object of the end wings 5 is to provide suitable space for bolt heads formed on bolts 6 which function within the T slots 3. By referring to Figure 3 it will be seen that end edges 7 of the down-turned diverging side members 2 are spaced apart leaving an open space 8 for bolt heads of the bolts 6. Figure 3 shows the end wings 5 overlapping. However, in the event that a job 9 is secured to the work table 4 by means of the bolts 6 functioning with clamps 10, the overlapping end wings 5 would be spaced apart in order that the bolts 6 would be provided with a space between end edges 11 of the wings 5.
By referring to- Figure 4 it will be seen that a number of T slots 3 have been provided with slot covers. A number of the T slots are not provided with the slot coversl but in actual work all the T slots 3 should be filled. with random lengths of slot covers 1.
By referring to Figure-4 it will be seen that the slot covers 1 together with the downturned diverging side members 2 form an inner channel 12 in order that drainage for cooling liquids may be provided.
What I claim is: p
In a slot cover for the purpose of covering a T slot in a work table down-turned diverging side members formed on said slot cover, end wings formed at each end of said slot cover, substantially as described for the purpose set forth.
