Description
Patented May 2, 1933 WALTER D'REIFUSS, OF NILES CENTER, ILLINOIS DRAWING- PAD Application filed June 24,
The present invention has for its object the provision of a drawing pad, includingamong other features a base or backing characterized by two straightedges along one side and end thereof, said straightedges projecting slightly above the uppermost page of the pad and being suitably graduated so that a triangle or other suitable drafting instrument can be readily and conveniently used in conjunction therewith for drawing vertical and horizontal lines Without the use of a T-' square.
One of the chief characteristics of the invention resides in gluing all of the pages of the pad together along their corresponding outer longitudinal edges, the other free longitudinal and corresponding end edges lying against the straightedges of the backing, whereby the uppermost page of the pad is always held in a proper position for use.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detaildescription is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as claimed.
In the drawing forming part of this application like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views and wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the pad showing a drawing instrument reposing thereon.
Figure 2 is a sectional view on line 22 35 of Figure 1.
- Figure 3 is a sectional view on line 33 of Figure 1.
The drawing pad forming the subject matter of the present invention comprises a base or backing 10 which may be constructed from any suitable material and also vary in size without departing from the inventive idea. This backing is characterized by two straightedges 11 and 12 respectively, the lat- 45 ter being secured upon and arranged along 1930. Serial No. 463,434.
one longitudinal side and jen'dedge of the backing as illustrated. These'straightedges and the backing may be made of cloth board orany other suitable material andmay' be 4 discarded after the pages 13 have been used. The straightedges are preferably graduated as illustrated to facilitate the use of a draft ing instrument 14, herein illustrated as an L-square.-
In accordance with the'present invention the pages 13 which repose upon the base or backing 10 have their corresponding outer longitudinal edges glued together, and also to the adjacent edge of the base 10, while their opposite free longitudinal edges, and the corresponding free end edges lie within the angle formed by the straight edges and preferably in contacting engagement With the adjacent straightedg'es ll and 12'respec- I tively. 'The remaining free end edgeslfi terminate flush with the adjacent edge of the base or backing 10. By reason of this construction each uppermost page is effectively held in position for use, as the'outer'longitudinal edges are secured together, whilelfl the corresponding side and end edges are nested against the straightedges. Each page can of course be easily and conveniently torn from the pad, by separating it from the outer longitudinal glued edge 15, and-as above stated When the pages have all been used, the backing in its entirety may be discarded, being very simple in construction and cheap to manufacture.
By reason of the pad having its glued edges 90 lying elsewhereflthan at the corner acent the vertex of the angle formed by straight edges, the sheets may be torn from the pad without the danger of leaving at the cornerv residual glue or glue and adherent torn parts I of the paper. Such residue Will prevent the proper use of a triangle or other like instrument when it is desirable to lay an edge thereof on the straightedges'near the corner. By
reason of the glue being entirely on an outer 99 edge, or on all the outer edges there is no danger for such residue being left at any part of the straightedges.
While it is believed that from the foregoing description, the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent, I desire to have it understood, that I do not limit myself'to what is herein shown and described and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
What I claim as new is:
1. A drawing padcomprising in combination a backing, a pad oi sheet material secured to the backing, and straightedges along two adjacent and perpendicular sides of the backing projecting above the level of the pad, the sheets of said pad at the edges thereof adjacent the straightedges being mutually separated and free.
, 2. A drawing pad comprising in combinationa backing, a padof sheet material secured to the backing, and straightedges along two adjacent and perpendicular sides of the 2 backing projecting above, the levelof the pad, the backing on the sides opposite said straightedges being unobstructed at the drawing level of the pad, and said pad being located within the angle of said straightedges Q; in close proximity thereto, and having the sheets at the corner in theangle mutually separate and free. I e
3. A drawing pad comprising numerous sheets of material for the receipt of drawing and like marks, a backing for said sheet straightedges arranged along one side and end of the backing to include said sheets in the angle between them, said sheets being united in a unitary pad and vhaving their Q edges adjacent the straightedges mutually separable and free.
4. A drawing outfit including a backing, straightedges secured along one side and one end of the backing, a plurality of'sheets united into a pad and secured to said backing in the angle formed by said straightedges, the
edges of the sheets of said pad being in substantial contact with said straightedges, said sheet edges being mutually free and sep- 9; arable, and other edges of the sheets and a coincident edge of the backing being glued together. i j
' 5. A drawing outfit including a backing, straightedges secured along one side and one 53 end of the backing, a plurality of sheets united into a pad and secured to the backing, said pad lying below the level of the straight.- edges and in the angle formed by said straightedges, the edges of said sheets being 2in substantial contact'with said straightedges, and being mutually separable andfree. In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
