JOSEPH P. DORE, JR, OF JGNESPORT, MAINE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CABLE-STOPPERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 190,200, dated May 1, 1877; application filed February 6, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OSEPH P. Dorm, J r., of Jonesport, of the county of Washington and State ,of Maine, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Chain -Stoppers for Navigable Vessels; and do hereby declare the same to be described in the following specitication and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which Figure 1 is a top view, Fig. 2 a side elevation, Fig. 3 a longitudinal section, and Fig. 4 a transverse section, of a chain-stopper embodying my invention.
My invention consists in the combination of a pawl, provided with two journals, with a carrier or supporter slotted and recessed in its opposite sides or standards, as set forth; also, in the combination of a yoke-lever or tripper with such journaled pawl and the ,slotted and recessed carrier; also, in the combination of inclined trough-guides, as hereinafter described, with such journaled pawl and the slitted and recessed carrier.
In the drawings, A denotes the pawl, provided with two journals, a a. projecting in opposite directions from it, and through two inclined slots,b b, arranged, as shown, in the two vertical walls or standards 0 c of the'carrier B. At the lower part of each slot 1) is a shoulder or recess, d, formed and leading from the slot in manner as represented.
The journals a a project somewhat beyond the outer faces of the standards, and over the arms 6 c of a tripper or yoke-formed lever, (J, arranged to embrace the carrier and pivoted to it. When in its lowermost position the said tripper rests on studs f f, projecting from the standards.
These standards, connected by cross-pieces or caps g k, extend upward from a bed-plate,
5, upon which, and between the standards, are two inclined trough-shaped guides, 70 70, there being betweenthem a channel for the reception of the anchor-chain D, which runs in this channel, while the anchor is being dropped. The guides k k serve to direct the chain into the channel, and to support it so that every other one of the links of the part in the channel may be upright and the intermediate ones be horizontal, such being to enable the pawl to properly engage with the chain to stop it from running out.
While the chain may be held by the pawl the journals of the latter will be in the recesses or notches 01. When it may be desirable to drop the anchor the tripper is to be raised, so as to force the pawl-joints out of the said notches. This having been done, the pawl will no longer e'stop the chain, but will be forced up and turned forward into the position shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 3.
I claim as my invention as follows:
1. The combination of the pawl A, provided with the journals ad, with the carrier B, slotted and recessed in its opposite standards, as set forth.
2. The combination of the tripper O with such journaled pawl A, and with the carrier B, slotted and recessed in its standards, as shown and described.
3. The combination of the inclined guides 70 7a with the slotted and recessed carrier B and the journaled pawl A, all being arranged and applied substantially as specified and represented.
JOSEPH P. DORR, J R.
