This invention lrelates to pencil `pointers Aand more particularly to pencil pointers of the kind comprising -a plurality of superposed connected abrasive sheets. Y

i Devices of the general Vcharacter referred to are well known and are used extensively by engineers, artists, designers,-architects,

and others engaged'in similar work. The

conventional device of this kind comprises a pluralityof superposed sheetsmounted on a wooden paddle and being joined together by means of glue applied along their outer edges. These prior devices havebeen found to be not entirely satisfactory, principally bes. i A cause of the marked tendency of the sheets to become detached accidentally before they have been used up entirely and also due to ing a used sheet. In accordance with a further feature of the invention, I provide tabs 8 for facilitating removal of the individual sheets without the users soiling his hands, these tabs in the form shown comprising extensions on the sheets projecting beyond the rear marginal portions 5 thereof.

In the modiiication shown vin Figures 4 and 5, the device comprises a base A and a pad consisting of sheets l 'the central portions 'of which are provided with abrasive 2 and the-side margins 3-8 and front and rear margins 4-5 respectively of which are Smooth, as in the form shown in Figure l.

However, in the modification, the sheets are not provided with openings as in the Figure 1 construction, but instead the adjacent sheets are joined by means ofV adhesive applied in spots 7 of greater transverse area than the mere thickness of a sheet between the smooth marginal top face portions of each sheet and the bottom face of the sheet next above. This thickness of the adhesive spots 7 shown in Figure -issomewhat exaggerated in order more clearlyto illustrate the disposition of the sheets and abrasive spots, it being understood that in practice the spots are much thinner and the sheets lie closeljT one above the other. The modied form shown in Figures 4 and 5 is also provided with tabs S to facilitate intentional removal of the sheets, and these tabs, taken in connection with the smooth marginal top face portions of the sheets, contribute to the elimination of soiling of the users hands. The adhesive spots being disposed between face portions of the adjacent sheets, are in conta-ct with Va substantial area of the sheets and serve to secure the latter together much more efficiently than is the case where the adhesive is applied to the edges of the sheets, as in prior devices of this character.

l To recapitulate the advantages resulting from my invention, the individual sheets may be removed without the aidnof a knife and without the users soiling his hands, since the smooth marginal portions of the sheets prevent accumulation of powdered graphite near the edges thereof, and since the tabs are readily accessible. The hazard of individual sheets being separated or of the pads being separated fromthe base, especially when the device is suspended on a string and susceptible to being bumped against a drafting board or the like, is eliminated because of the more efiicient securing of the pads to each other and to the base.

Although the devicesdisclosed herein are considered practical embodiments of the invention, it will be understood, that various changes may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as de'ned in the claims.

I claim:

1. A device of the character described comprising a plurality of superposed sheets flat throughout their extents and each having a portion provided with abrasive material and a marginal face portion free from abrasive, and adhesive material on said marginal face portions and adjacent portions of the sheets in relatively wide zones for securing together said marginal portions of adjacent sheets.

2. A device of the character described comprising a plurality of superposed sheets flat throughout their extents and each having a portion-'provided with abrasive''material andk a marginal face portion free from abrasive, a plurality of registering openings in the said marginalrportions of the respective sheets wider than the thickness of the respective sheets, and adhesive material filling said openings.

3. A device Vof the character described comprising a base, a plurality of superposed sheetsy flat throughout their extents and` mounted on saidbase and each having the central portion of its top face provided with abrasive material 'and having marginal portions of its top face free from abrasive, 'a plurality of spaced relatively'large registering openings in the marginal portions of the sheets, and solid'columns of material extending through said openings and engaging said sheets and base.
