FILING- LEAF AND LABEL-noLnnnrnEnnroR Application filed May 12, 1931 Serial No. 536,743.
This invention relates to afiling leaf or panel, and a label-holder or index tab therefor. The invention will best be understood by reference to the following description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing of one specific embodiment thereof, while its scope will be pointed out more particularly in the appended claims.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is an elevation of a filing leaf or panel, and a label-holder or index tab, embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view, on an enlarged scale, on line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a sectional view, on an enlarged scale, on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing, and to the embodiment of the invention which isillustrated therein, there is shown a label-holder comprising a frame 5, presenting a label-receiving pocket 6, and having one or more, herein two, label-viewing openings 7 registering with each other, and facing in opposite directions, said frame having a pair of arms 8 and 9 (see Fig. 2), to embrace a margin 10 of a filing leaf or panel 11. One ofthearms, herein the arm 9, is provided with one or more,herein two projections 12, to enter openings 13 leading from one face of the leaf or panel. One or more, herein two, screws 14, extending loosely through the arm 8 and threaded into the arm 9, serve to move said arms toward each other to clamp the margin of the panel therebetween, and to maintain the projections 12 in the openings 13.
In case the leaf margin to which the label: holder is attached is vertical, as in the present example, the label-receiving pocket 6 has an entrance 15 at the top (see Fig. 3), and the bottom is at least partially closed by a bot tom wall 16, herein conveniently formed as an integral part of the arm 9, and bent horizontally to underlie the arm 8. The frame is conveniently made of sheet metal, bent or folded as at 17 (see Fig. 2) into generally U-shaped form. The arm 9 is bent inwardly as at 18, so that it is close to the arm 8, to provide an abutment 19 to rest against the edge of the margin 10 of the leaf, thereby to the adjacent edge of the leaf, quite independently of the projections 12, which enter the openin 13. The projections 12 are conveniently ormed by slitting the arm 9 as at 20, (see Fig. 1) to form two tongues which are then bent atv right angles to the face of the arm '(see Fig. 2), while the intervening portion of the arm constitutes a tongue 21, which rests against a shoulder, presented by the leaf, and thus further maintains the alignment of' the label-holder with the leaf; Adjustment of the label-holder lengthwise ofthe margin of the. leaf is accomplished by loosening the screws 14 sufficiently to enable the arms 8 to be spread apart and the projections 12 to be withdrawn from the openings 13, whereupon the'label-holder can be moved along the marm of theleaf to the desired place, where the projections will enter other openings, and the label-holder can be clamped by tightening screws. This adjustment isof course necessary in the case of a file having several leaves face to face, and each requiring a-label-holder' or indextab, it being customary to arrange the index-holders or tabs in series, so that all i may be viewed at one time. 7
In the present example, the leaf or panel comprises a plate 22, provided along its vertical edges with channel member 23 and 24L,
embracing opposite faces of the plate and presenting channels to receive the matter to be displayed, such as index slips and the like. In this case, the openings 13 extend through opposite sides of thechannel member 24 and through the intervening plate 22 (see Fig. 2). It is of course evident that the leaf might be simply a guide card, made of material'such as press-board, without a channel member on its label-holder receiving edge.
Having thus described one embodiment of the invention, but without limiting ourselves thereto, what we claim and desire by Letters Patent to secure is:
1. In combination, a file panel having a said panel being provided with a shoulder parallel with said series of openings, and a label-holder adj ustably mounted on said margin for movement lengthwise of the latter,
said label holder comprising a pair of arms which embrace said margins, one of said arms having two tongues which are received in the openings of one pair and are receivable in openings of other pairs, and an intermediate tongue which engages said shoulder and maintains said label-holder in parallelism with said panel.
12. A label-holder comprising, invcombi nation, a frame presentmg a'label-receivmg pocketand a label-viewing opening, said frame having a pair of arms to embrace a leaf, one of said arms having a'projection extending toward the other to enter an opening in the leaf, one of said arms having a portion offset toward and from the other, and a screw extending through and threaded into said offset portion and extending loosely through the other arm to move said arms toward each other and to-urge said projection into said opening. v
3. A- label-holder comprising,in combination, a frame presenting a label-receiving pocket and a label-viewing opening, said frame having a pair of arms to embrace a leaf, one of said arms having a projection extending toward the other to enter an opening in the leaf, one of-said arms having a projection extending toward the other and adapted to engage the-edge of the leaf, and arscrew extending through said arms normally'to cause the first-mentioned projection v to be urged into said opening, and to cause the second-mentioned projection to be urged into position for engagement with said edge.
In testimony whereof, we'havesigned' our names to this specification.
