COMBINATION BOOK MARK AND CLIP Filed Aug. i1, 1931 Fig ,2.
INVENTOR PHILIP KRASNOW BY HIS ATTORNEY' Fatented Sept. 20,
PHILIP KRASNOW, or BROOKLYN, new YORK COMBINATIQN'BOOK MARK Am CLIP Application filed August 11, 1931. Serial No. 556,408.
This invention relates to aicombination bookmark and clip or similar article and in particular to one having novel features of construction and advantages n use.
. A particular ob ect, of my inventlon is to provide a book mark, the parts of which'are so flexed, shaped or tempered that they will tend to spring apart so that when the device r is used as a book mark, it will, when the book is held in the palm of the hand with the back edge'down, tend to openthe pages to the.
place where the book mark is positioned.
A still further object. of my invention 1s to provide in a device of the character referred to, a combination member, which,
while serving as a book mark, as indicated,
may also be employed as a clip to hold together a bunch of pages, papers or other construction shown and described without departingfrom the principles of the invention or sacrificing its chief advantages; hence such invention is not to be confined to the structures shown in the accompanying drawing, in which;
Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved combination book mark and clip showing the central portion thereof in its free posi tion. Figure 2 is a section taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1, showing the curvature of the center and outer portions of the device.
papers or the like together. 7
Figure 4 is a plan view showing how the edge of a page of a book, the paper being indicated in outline, and
Figure 5 is a plan view of a modified formof my invention showing how the same may be made in two parts, said parts being shaped so that theywill have a tendency'to separate in. opposite directions. Y i,
f Referring to the, drawing in detail and in particular to the forms illustrated in Fig{ ures 1 to 4, inclusive, my improved combination book mark and clip conslsts of material or wire punched or otherwise delineated toprovide an outer ring-like portion "5 and an inner circular, portion 6, the members 5 and 6 being formed'integrally and joined by the intermediate portion? 7 As illustratedin Figure 2, the member 5 is tempered to have a free curvature in the direction shown while the member 6 is tempered to have a free curvature in the opposite direction so that the parts 5'and 6 will have a tendency and, will spring'away from 7 a plane in the median line of the device.
When serving-as a book mark, the device will simply'be placed between the pages of a book and due to thefweak resistance of the gauge of the material, the weight of the book will prevent the springing apart of the members 5 and 6 when the. book is resting onits' side. However, when the book is picked up and the. back of the book rests in the palm'of the hand,j the spring eft'ort of the members 5 and 6, which providestheir tendency to separate,,will open thebook at the place in which the book mark is'ipiosi-v tioned.
. The device is cut from a piece ofjcurved sheet material, the sheet material being shaped or tempered to maintain'its curved form and when' the one section is stamped out, it will have a tendencyto assume-the position illustrated in Figure with respect to the portion 5.
n is evident that when the bookmark is Flgure 3 1s a view in sideelevation show: ing the use of the device as a clip for holding] to be used as ,a cpaper 'clip'or" to be used at I the edge of a page,,it is simply necessary to flex the center portion 6through the 'open- I ing Suntil itis at the other side-; of.the combination device may be employed to clip together papers or may be inserted over the it willbe exerting'a force-inthe direction from which ithas been flexed and will se- 20 I or'tempered-to spring in a 'directionaway V curely hold between it and the member 5,

number of pieces, as illustrated in Figure in'which the center piece 10 is-provided With hQ tQ i 11 which ill-tum, are
cured asby rivetingor otherwise to'thelends 13"o'f the ring portion 14 in which constructionthe member 10 alone may be' shaped' 1 from the member land-the member lei may be either left flat or may be curved as dewhich when serving as a bookmark will tend i scribed in connection with the device illus- 25 trated in Figures 1 to 4.
It is evident also that the device'might be made of wire having aplurality of portions, said portions being integral or sepa rate and being tempered or shaped to carry outithefunction as described inconnection With thedevice; V V
. What I claim is v 1. A book mark for use wholly between the pages of a book consisting of apiece of mate rial tempered for normal distortion out of a plane and insufficiently resistant to oppose the straightening thereof between the pages of abook resting on one of its sides but sufficiently tempered to assume its distorted shape and open the book when the latter is unsupported onits opposite sides.
2. A combination book mark and clip con sisting of a piece of metal tempered for normal distortionout of a plane and comprising a 'plurallty of portions,.one portion being arranged to normally extend in a direction away from said other portion, one portion having an opening through which said other portlon maybe moved to use the device as a clip, said metal being 'insufiiciently resistant to oppose-the straightening thereof between the pages of a bookresting onone of its sides but sufliciently tempered toassume its distorted shape and open the book when the latter is unsupportedonits opposite side.. L Y
testimony whereof Iaflix mysignature.
KRASNOW. [L. s.]
- g It is evident, therefore, that I' have prol jvided acombination book mark and clip to open the book to the place'last used in which the book mark is positionedor it may serve as'a mark at the upper edge of the page in which position it will be held by reason of the tendency ofthe parts to grip the oppo- Itis evident too', that {the parts of the device may be enhanced by decoration or may vantages derived from its use.

be used foradvertising and thatthe device may be'pro'duced in a singlejstaniping or madejup in a number of parts "andmay be produced very cheaply and may" have any ornamental configuration desired.
Thejspring thatactsias a book opener may be arranged in difierentfways or combina- 'tions and maybe made of sheet wire, metal,
wire or any other substance or material which i is capabl'e of retaining its original'position afterbending. l It is evident thatmy improved book opener 'may'be'madein various .designs'or ornamental shapes whereby its appearance willbeen-- hanced without departing from the invention.
invention is not to be restricted to the 7 precise details of; constructionshown since various changes and modifications may be made therein without departing from jthefi scope of the invention or "sacrificing the'ad-
