Patented Sept. 6, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE I HAROLD M. BOWMAN, OF SUMMIT, AND ROBERT W. FENTRESS, OF ELIZABETH, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNORS TO STANDARD OIL DEVELOPMENT COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE CONTAINER CLOSURE Application filed February 25, 1930. Serial No. 431,074.
This invention relates to an improved closure device for a container. The invention will be fully understood from \the following description thereof, illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1.is a verticalsectional view through a container and closure; and
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View through a container and modified form of closure.
In the drawings reference numeral 1 designates a container for liquidand having an opening with which the improved closure is adapted to cooperate. The closure device includes a medicine dropper comprising a bulb 2 of rubber composition, or other suitable material, and having a thlckened base 3 which engages a groove formed between shoulders i and 5 of a tube 6.' A ring 7 of celluloid, or other suitable material, reinforces the connection between the bulb and tube. An annular flange 8 projects-radially outwardly from the bulb intermediate the ends of the bulb and is adapted to be seated against the end walls of the container. A coupling mem: her, or screw cap, is provided with a flange 9 adapted to engage the flange of the bulb and is provided with a threaded portion adapted to be threaded upon the container.
In the modification illustrated in Fig. 2 the closure device includes a medicine drop per comprising a bulb 11 of rubber composi tion, or other suitable material, and having an inwardly projecting thickened base 12 which engages a groove formed between shoulders 13 and 14 of a tube 15 of glass, or other suitable material. A flange 16 projects radially outwardly from the base 12 fin, or flange, of rubber composition of the dropper, and the dropper remains in position in the neck of the container.
Various changes and alternative arrangements may be made within the scope of the appended claim, in which it is our intention to claim all novelty inherent in the invention as broadly as the prior art permits- We, claim:
A device of the class described, comprising a container having an opening, a bulb, a flange intermediate the ends of the bulb projecting radially outwardly from the bulb into alignment with the wall of the container, the flange adapted to rest upon the end of the wall with the lower portion of the bulb depending into the container in spaced relation to the wall, a coupling member for pressing the flange against the wall, and a tube in the depending portion only of the bulb extending into the container.
HAROLD M. BOWVMAN. ROBERT W. FENTRESS.
and is adapted to be seated against the neck of the container. A cap, or coupling, 17 is provided with a flange adapted to engage the flange 16 of the bulb, and is provided with screw threads which are adapted to cooperate with threads on the container to draw the flange of the bulb into fluid-tight engagement with the container. Other fastening means than screw threads can be used if desired.
By the construction described, a seal is made against the top of the neck of the container by pressure of a screw cap on the lateral
