BLOOM CLOSURE Filed Dec. 17. 1928 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 FIVE- Eau INVENTOR BY Ov/a 5/00/77 ATroRNEYs Patented Dec. 1, 1931 f UNITED siuxriazsw` DAVID BLooin, or BERKELEY, `CALIFORNIA CLosURE 'Application fned'necember'n, i928. serial No. 326,552.
My invention relates to closures for containers particularly designed to'contain jams, jellies, preservesand similar food stuffs. A container of this type is shownin my co end-V ing application entitled Container, erial No; 323,303, filed December 3, 1928,
An Aobject of my'invention is to provide a closure lh aving associated therewith means for removing the contents of the container.
Another object of my invention is to provide a sanitary, hermetically sealed closureV for ya container. Y
Another object of my invention is to provide means for facilitating the opening of a sealed container. v Y
The foregoing and other yobjects are 'attained in the embodiment of the invention shown in the drawings,in which Figure .1 is a planof one form of closure in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a cross sectional view of the container disclosed in Figure 1, the plane of d section being indicated by line 2 2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a plan of a modified form of container in accordance with my invention.
Figure 4 shows in cross section the container of Figure 3 with my closure applied thereto, the plane of section being indicated by line 1--4 of Figure 3. K
Figure 5 is a plan of an additional modification of the closure of my invention. n
Figure 6 is a side elevation of the container particularly shown in Figure 5.
Figure 7 is a cross sectional view, with the plane of section taken on line 7 -7 of Figure 5, of the closure disclosed in Figure 5.
Figure 8 is a view similar to `Figure 7 showing the container of Figure 5 in cross section but with the closure in open position.
In its preferred form, the closure of my invention is preferably applied to a container having a mouth portion and comprises a perforated or apertured disc seated in the mouth Aportion of the container to effect a closure thereof and in association with whichV a spatula or similar member passes through the closure disc and is sealed in position by a sealing substance such as paraffin, which not only effects a hermetically tight seal of the container but also securely holds the spatula in proper position. 1 A
In the modification of the'l invention disclosed in Figures 1 and 2, I preferably'provide a container 6 fabricated `ofl paper-f or similar material which is provided at its upper end withV a mouth portion bounded by a reinforced edge 7. At intervals aroundits periphery, the mouth portion is marked, as at 8 either by perforations or by suitable indicia printed on the lip 7 to define vthe por-- tions which are adapted to be displaced from' the rim of the container to pry up a closure 9. The closure preferably comprises a disc 11 properly seated within the mouth of the container and pierced by a plurality of perforations or apertures 12. In the central portionl of the disc there is provided an elongated aperture 13 for the reception of a spatula 14 orsimilar device. The spatula projects far enough on the outside of the containerfto;
provide a convenient handle portion 16 While the part 17of the spatula within the container is useful in removing the contents 18 thereof.
In order to keep the spatula properly positioned and also to seal the closureV disc 11 in place, I preferably use a sealing substance such as melted paraffin and pour it over the top of the disc 11. The parafiin flows through the vapertures 12 and seals both sides' of Vthe disc in the container 6 and also firmly maintains the spatula 14 in place. In this manner there is effected an air-tight seal yand is also provided a neat, efiicient and handy con tainer closure. Y Y Y "In the form of the invention shown in Figures 3 and 4, thev container 21 is of Y glass or earthenware and is threaded -on the neck portion 22 to receive the customary threaded cap 23. This cap is usually ofmetal and at its central portion is deformed to provide a socket 24 for the reception of a spatula i'.26 which is firmly held in place by a. crimped portion 27 of the cap 23. Although Vin va strict sense the spatula v26 does not pass thru the metal of the cap 23, it nevertheless passes thru the major plane of Athe cap and itis Ito include this structure also Vthat I employ the words passing thru inthe claims.
f In Figures' 5 to 8, inclusive, of the drawings I have disclosed my invention as applied to containers 31 made of earthenware or glassware. In this environment, I preferably provide the container with an upper lip 32 which is internallygrooved, as at 33, to forni a seat for a disc 34: of paper or similar material which is pierced by apertures or p erforations36. AdJacent one end of the disc,
I preferably provide an enlarged perforation 37 for the reception of a spatula 38 which extends well into the container 3l and pro- 'ects therefrom a material distance to form a andle. The spatula 38 is usually of such a length as to rest at an inclination within the container and since it forms a useful'lever for L,dislodging Ythe disc 34, I preferably facilitate this action by providing an interruption or notch 39 in the upper rim oredge of the container 31. Y
In order to effect an airtight seal and to hold the spatula and lclosure disc 34 in proper tion, there is provided a neat, attractive con- 4 tainer especially designed for packing food stuffs and with which there is afforded tight sanitary closure which can easily be removed and whichV also provides a means for removing the contents of the container.
It is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the form of the closure shown and described herein, as the invention, as set forth in the following claims may be embodied in a plurality of forms.
I claim:
V1. A closure comprising a disc having an aperture therein, a spatula passing through the aperture in said disc and extending from both sides of said disc, and a sealing substance such asparaflin securing said spatula toV said disc. 2. A closure comprising a container having a mouth, a disc seated in said mouth, said disc having an aperture therein, a spatulay passing through the aperture in said disc and extending into said container, and a sealing substance such as paraffin for securing said spatula to said disc and said disc to said container. v 1
. 3.. A closure comprising a container', adisc having a plurality of apertures for closing said container, a spatula passing through one of the apertures in said disc, and a sealing substancesuch asparalin disposed on both sides of said `disc and through the aperturesV for retaining said spatula in place..
4, closure for a container comprising a disc for closing said container, a spatula piercing said disc and extending into the container and extending out from the container to form a handle, and means such as parailin for securing said spatula to said disc.
5. A closure for a container having a mouth, a disc seated in said mouth, a spatula piercing said disc; said .spatula being positioned so that a portion thereof extends into and another portion thereof extends out of said'container, and a sealing substance, such as paraiin, encompassing said disc whereby said container'is hermetically sealed and said spatula is secured in said position.
6. A closure for a container having a mouth, a disc seated in said mouth vsaid disc having a plurality of apertures therein, a spatula passing through one of said apertures; said spatula being positioned so that a portion thereof extends into and another. portion thereof extends out of said container, and a sealingsubstance, such as paraiiin, encompassing said disc whereby saidcontainer is hermetically sealed and said spatula is secured in said position.
7, A hermetically sealed closure comprising a container having a mouth, a disc seated in said mouth, a spatula piercing said disc and extending from bothsides thereof, anda sealing substance encompassing said disc and securing said spatula to both` sides of said disc.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set m hand. v
y DAVID BLOOM.
