Description

Sept- 29, 1931. H. P. MCGINNIS GARMENTv Filed Jan. 2o, 1930 Patented Sept. 29, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT oFrlcE HERBERT P. IOGINNIS, I' PABKERSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR T0 'GENERAL RAINCOAT 00., 0l' PARKERSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA, A CORPORATION 0l' WEST VIRGINIA GABHENT Application mea :um-y so, mso. semi no. 422,091.
This invention relates to garments and is directed more particularly to an improved coat having leg portions associated therewith.
The primary object of the present inven-v tion is to provide a coat having leg portions attached thereto in such manner that. they may be easily and readily concealed beneath the coat or let down and applied to the legs of the wearer. The manner of attaching the leg portions to the coat being novel and of such character that the, points of attachment shall not be visiable from the exterior of the coat and hence when the legs are folded beneath lthe coat, the coat` from all exterior appearances shall be identical with any other coat.
Another object is to provide a coat of the above character which shall `have the leg portions attached thereto in such manner as to be adjustable for the height of the wearer.
and which may be folded when not in use in such manner that the soiled portions of the legs will not .soil the clothing of the wearer.
Another object is to provide a coat where-Y simple in construction, inexpensive to man- Fig. 1 is an illustration of a Vcoat con-` structed in accordance with my invention with the leg portions unfolded and the coat and leg portions applied to the wearer;
Fig. 2 is an elevation of the interior of the coat; and v Figs. 3 and 4 are detail sectional views taken respectively on the lines 3--3 and 4--4 of Fig. 2'.
Describing the Various parts by reference characters, 1 denotes generally a coat of any suitable or approved style having the usual pockets. These pockets are formedin the body portions of the coat in the usual man- .ner by slitting the material at 3 to provide an opening, and then fastening a pocket 4 and a flap 5 adjacent the opening by stitching or any other suitable fastening meaIis. Detachably connected to each pocket is a leg portion adapted to loosely embrace the leg of the wearer to protect him against the weather and since each of these leg portions are identical in construction a description of one is deemed to be sufficient.
Fastened along the lower side ed es of each pocketrare a plurality of sna'p asteners 7 or other suitable attaching means which are adapted to engage with cooperating fasteners on the leg portion 6. Each le portion is formed of`suitable material, pre y erably similar to that from which the coat is made, and is provided with a substantiallytubular portion 9 ada ted to loosely embrace the lower portion o the leg of the wearer, and a single thickness attaching portion 10. The tubular portion may be creased like an ordinary trouser leg so as to be fiat, and preferably the upper portion thereof is formed with a vent 11 that maybe closed by a fastener 12. This vent serves to permit the wearer to conveniently step into or out of the leg portion .when the coat is being worn. As noted from Figs. 1 and 2, the tubular portion of the leg is preferably of such length that it always extends to a point above the lower edge of the coat.v Y
When. notin use, the legl portions may each be folded upon itself ad]acent the top edge of the tubular portion so that said tubular portion lies between the coat and the attaching portion 10.' Suitable fasteners 13 atthe lower end of the `legs engage with cooperating fasteners 14 disposed alongl the side seams of the pockets adjacent their up er portions. It is thus apparent that the soi ed or ,wet lower portion o each leg, namely the tubular portion 9, when folded, is positioned between the coat and attaching portions and hence the wearers clothing cannot be soiled thereby. If the leg portions become badly soiled, they may be easily and quickly detached from the pockets and cleaned separately from the coat.
In use, the leg portions will be folded beneath the coat and to all outside appearances, the coat is similar to any other due to the fastening of the leg portions tofthe pocket rather than the body of the coat. When desired, the fasteners 13 and 14 may be easily separated to let the legs fall down in position, whereupon fasteners 12 are unsnapped and the feet may be easily inserted through the tubular leg portions 9 while the coat is being worn. The leg portions pron tect the limbs of the wearer-when so worn and being attached to the hanging pockets which are substantially waist high, permit i free and easy movement of the legs without binding.
If desired, the leg ortions may be permau I nently attached to t e pockets, instead of using the detachable fasteners 7, when the coat is made to order for an individual. The coat and leg portions may be made of waterproof material to protect the wearer against rainor snow, or the .coat and leg portions may be made of any woolen materials desired, to protect the wearer against cold.
I claim:
1. A garment of the character described comprising a body portion having pockets extending into and disposed on the inner side thereof, and leg covering elements attached to and supported entirely by certa-in of said pockets and adapted to embrace the legs of the wearer, the points of attachment being located on the inner faces of the pockets adjacent the coat.
V 2. A garment of the character described comprising a body portion having side pockets extending into and dis osed on the interior side of the garment, eg covering elements connected to the marginal edges of said pockets, said leg covering elements each being formed with an upper flat attaching portion and a lower tubular portion said elements each being adapted to be folded adjacent the line of intersection between-said flat and tubular portions, and fastening means .interposed between the coat and pocket for retaining said`elgnent .in the 'folded position.
3. A garment of the character described comprising a bod rtion having side pockets extending into and di Osed on the interior side of the garment, eg coveringr elements connected with 'said pockets, said leg covering elements each bein formed with an upper fiat attaching portion and a lower tubular portion adapted to embrace the Aleg of the wearer, said elements each HERBERT P.
