IMPROVEMENT IN POCKET-KNIVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 182,415, dated September 19, 1876; application filed September 2, 1876.
the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which the figure is a side view.
My invention relates to an .improvement in pocket-knives of the kind ordinarily used by boys; and it consists as a new article of manufacture in a pocket-knife having a blade extended beyond the handle and formed with a knob of metal upon the end thereof to prevent accidental injury resulting from the careless or thoughtless use of the knife.
In the accompanying drawing, A represents a knife of the kind ordinarily used by boys, the same being commonly known as the Barlow knife. The said knife is shown constructed according to my invention, with a knob, B, upon the end of the blade, which is formed of metal, and firmly attached to the metal of the blade.
In attaching the knob to the blade the latter is extended beyond the handle, so thatthe knob forms the end of the knife when closed, which may be used for hammering, or may be grasped for opening the knife.
- The objection to the use of knives by children has been, and still is, the accidental injury to themselves likelyto result from the thoughtlessness of their immature years, such as running the point into the eye, stabbing themselves while Whitt-ling, falling on the point, or putting the knife into the pocket While open. My improvement obviates all of these objections in a simple and cheap manner, without affecting the use of the knife for cutting purposes.
I am aware of the fact that a knife has been constructed with a ring at the end, to be used as a draw-knife, incidental to which are some of the advantages that I have described, but the case referred to but imperfectly accomplishes the purpose, and cannot be used as a hammer when closed as mine can, an advantage which would be of great importance in the estimation of a boy. I therefore disclaim the case referred to, and confine my invention to the form shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is As a new article of manufacture, a boys pocket-knife,having a blade extended beyond the handle, with a metallic knob, B, formed upon the end thereof, as and for the purpose described.
