This invention relates to laundry apparatus and has special reference to a suction cup clothes pounder.

One important object of the invention 1s to provide an impro-ved device of the character which may be used on delicate fabrics without injuring the same.

A second important object of the invention is to provide a novel device of this character wherein the suction action of the suction cup may be properly regulated.

A third important object vof the invention is to provide a novel handle arrangement for such devices.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described, Yillustrated in the accompanying drawings and claimed.

In the invention as here shown, there is provided a frusto-conical suction cup preferably formed of sheet metal and having a lrolled edge'll at its lower end. The upper end of this cup is supported by a bevel edged plate 12 to which the cup is secured by any suitable means as by brazing, autogenous welding or the like. Projecting up from the center of the plate 12 is a boss 13 and through the plate andboss extends a threaded opening wherein is screwed the lower end of a pipe 14 forming the stem or shank of the device. In the form of the invention shown in Figure 5 the stein 14 opens freely through its top end but in the form shown in Figures 1, 2 and 4 a valve seat 17 is located in the stein adjacent its upper end. The threaded body 18 of a needle valve is screwed into the upper end of the stem 14 and is provided with a reduced and pointed B0 lower end 19 coacting with the seat 17 to regulate the flow of air through the seat opening. Posts 2O lead outwardly through the stern and handle just above the valve seat and a knul-led head 21 is provided on 85 the valve for adjustment thereof toward and from the seat 17.

In each of these forms, the device is used in the ordinary manner by placing the clothes in a. tub with a suitable quantity of water and plunging the cup up and down over the clothes in Contact with the same. Obviously'for washing, soap or other detergent, is added, to the water while for rinsing clear water is used. By reason of the shank being in the form of a tube air will iiow in and out of the cup and the suction action will, in the form of Figure 57 be greatly lessened so that delicate fabrics may bewashed with this device without in- 8o jury. The remaining forni may, by opening or closing the valve to the desired eX- tent, be used for delicate fabrics or for washing heavy fabrics when a high suction effect is desirable.

There has thus been provided a simple and eflicient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.

It is obvious that changes may be made j in the form and construction of the invention without departing fromv the principles thereof. It is not, therefore, desired to conne the invention to the exact forni herein shown and described but it is desired to include all such as come within the scope claimed.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is A clothes pounder comprising a frustoconical cup, a tubular shaft fixed to the 10U smaller end thereof and provided in the vicinity of its upper end with an interiorly located seat, theinterior surface of the shaft above said seat having a thread and the shaft having openings located between the seat and the upper end, a handle grip mounted upon the shaft and having open-v ings registering with the openings thereof, a valve member having a thread engaging they thread in the shaft, said valve member having a reducedY lower end portion lying between said openings and an end portion I adapted to engage the seat.
