Patented Aug. 11, 1931 UNITED STATES lCHABLIIEIS W. MEARA, OF SAN' MATEO, CALIFORNIA BUILDING WALL Application lcd October 20, 1928. Serial No. 813,779.
This invention relates to a building wall and more particularly to a wall constructed of concrete blocks.
Among the objects of the invention is to l increase the structural strength of building walls.
Another object is to provide a rigiditylr structure without increasing the breadt the wall.
A further object is to so brace adjoining reinforcing rods as to produce integrity of structure.
Other objects and advantages appear as the description progresses.
In this specification and the accompanying drawings the invention is disclosed in its preferred form. But itis to be understood that it is not limited to this form, because it may be embodied in other forms. Itis also to be understood that in and by the claims following the description it is desired to cover the invention in whatsoever form it may be embodied.
In the one sheet of drawings:
Fig. 1` is a perspective view of a wall constructedin accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same showing the diagonal reinforcing brace.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the diagonal reinforcing brace detached from the wall.
of of In detail the construction illustrated in the.
drawings comprises the concrete blocks 1. Each of the blocks 1 have a pair of interspaced vertical holes such as 3-3 passing therethrough. The internal reinforcing links 1 -4 encircle the two holes 3 to strengthen the block 1.
The wall comprises two interspaced series of blocks laid in tiers on the foundation 2 to form a double wall and so arranged that the successive overlying bricks are in staggered relation in the usual manner. The conventional grouting is used to unite adjoinin blocks. The blocks, as far as possible, should 45 be of uniform size and shape, but if desired,
suitable angle blocks such as 8--9-10- 11-12 may be used for the corners of the structure.
The vertical reinforcing rods 13-14-15- 5 16 pass through the holes 3 in the block to retain in position the several tiers of each wall. The longitudinal braces 18 connect adjacent reinforcing rods to strengthen each wall per se. The transverse braces 17 join opposite reinforcing rods of the two walls to L5 render the structure rigid as a whole.
The cross braces 20 are formed of a single length of wire bent to form an X having the four rings 21--21 at the extremities thereof adapted to encircle the four adjacent rods 00 13-14-15-16. The loops 22 depend from the rings 21 and extend into the holes 3 in the blocks 1. The endsof the wire y20 are twisted together at 24 to strengthen the brace.
The ends of the braces 17-18-20 are held 05 rigid by the grout between the blocks so an additional strengthening of the wall is secured.
Having thus described this invention, what l claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1s:
1. A building wall comprising two series of concrete blocks having openings therethrough and forming a double wall, vertical reinforcing rods passing through said open ings, a brace engaging a reinforcing rod of one wall and extending obliquely to engage a reinforcing rod of the second wall, and a second diagonal brace fixed to the first brace and engaging reinforcing rods in juxtaposition to those engaged by the first brace.
2. A building wall comprising two series of blocks having openings therethrough and forming a double wall, vertical reinforcing rods passing through said openings, an integral cross brace engaging a reinforcing rod of one wall and extending obliquely to engage a reinforcing rod of the second wall, and also extending angularly to engage the reinforcing rods 1n juxtaposition to the first pair of reinforcing rods.
3. A building wall comprising two series of blocks having openings therethrough and forming a double wall, vertical reinforcing D5 rods passing through said openings, a cross brace formed of a single length of wire and engaging a reinforcing rod of one wall and extending obliquely to engage a reinforcing rod of the second wall and extending angu- W larly to engage the reinforcing rods in juxtaposltion to the first pair of reinforcing rods, and having loops formed thereon engaging the openings in seid blocks.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 13th day of October, A. D. 1928.
` CHARLES W. MEARA.
