The saidshank extends beyond the-brush and hassecured'tothe extremity thereof; seated in a suitable slottedopening provided therein, a spri-ngf' which preferably takes the for-inoff a" flaty steel springthough not` necessa'rily restricted thereto. Y
"The operative handleattachment for theY device' consistsof a. hand gri Scentr'ally provided with a cylindrical bore 9 and has secured thereto a tubular sleeve or ferrule 1() by means of screws 11. The said sleeve 10 is adapted toreceive the shank 3 and provide a bearing therefor and is engaged therewith by a screw 12 secured in .a suitable threaded opening in the shank 3 and operating in a slotted groove 13 provided in the sleeve 10 adjacent the inner extremity thereof, the said screw 12 sliding in the groove 13 and permitting of a partial rotation of the said shank within the said sleeve 10. y
Provided in the shank 3 is a slotted opening 14 for engagement of the locking device which consists of a lever or catch 15 transversely mounted on a pin 16 which is mounted to rotate in a transverse slot provided therefor in the sleeve 10, the said slot being bisect-cd by a slotted opening 18 in the said sleeve aligned with tlie'opening 14s in the shank 3.
A plate 19 provided centrally with a suitable opening 2O for operation of the catch 'l5 is secured to the sleeve 10 by means of screws 21 received in suitable threaded openingsprovided therefor in the said sleeve. The under face of the plate 19 is indented or recessed as indicated at 22 to provide, in conjunction with the transverse slot in the sleeve 1()7 a bearing for the pin 16. The bearing so providedfor the pin 16 is of a suiiciently close or snug fit for the said pinas t0 retain the catch 15 in any set position within the limits of movement permitted it, such fit being partiallyv secured by the plate 19 being made of a sufhciently resilient material as to insure a. constant moderate pressure thereby on the said pin 16 when the attaching screws 21 are tightened in place. In consequence application of pressure to the catch 15 would be necessary for its Voperation preventing accidental engagement of the said catch.
The outer extremity of the spring 7 is received in a slotted opening 23 provided in a cap 24: which is secured to the extremity of the hand grip 8 by a screw 25 inserted through an elongated opening 26 in the head of the cap 24 and screwed into the grip 8. This permits of partial rotation of the cap S -for adjustment of the tension of the spring T. A slot 27 in the head'of the cap for reception of a screw driver or similar instrument facilitates adjustment of the said cap.
In the operation of the device `when the locking lever is disengaged application of the brush-to the fabric to be cleaned and movement thereof in a brushing operation serves lby reason of the partial adherence of the bristles to the fabric to rotate the shank 3 in the sleeve 10 to the extent permitted by the operation of the engaging screw 12 in the slotted opening 13. Such partial rotation of the said shank has the eect ofapplying a torsional tension to the spring 7 Upon completion of the brushing movement and disengagement of the bristles from the fabric the spring 7 actuates the shank 3 imparting a reverse rotation thereto of considerable velocity terminating in a sharp reversal at the conclusion thereof with accompanying vibration by the action of the spring in adjustment of the shank to its normal position. This action has the'eifect of dislodgment of adhering substances from the bristles of the brush. the initial and chief dislodgment taking place in the direction of brushing movement and in consequence away from the fabric being cleaned. This rotation and vibration is of such rapidity as to permit of an almost immediate re-application of the brush without appreciable delay.
Adjustment of the tension of the spring 7 can be secured by loosening the screw 25 in the cap 24 and rotation of the cap the desired amount the screw operating in the slot 23 provided therefor', the said screw being re-tightened upon completion of the adjustment.
lVhere it is desired to use the brush as an unyielding ordinary form of brush for any reason the locking lever 15 is engaged in the slot 14 provided in the shank 3 preventing rotation of the shank. In the event of breakage of the spring or other part such locking engagement of the shank could be made to permit of continued use of the brush as an ordinary unyielding device until repairs could be effected. v
The device could be re-adj usted for use in a variety of forms to accommodate various kinds of brushes for various uses where such an actuated brush would be advantageous including furniture and carpet cleaning devices, without departure from the spirit of my invention and such re-adaptation would necessarily be considered as within the scope of the present invention'. A
Having thus described my invention what I claim is Y 1. The combination with a brush of a shank secured to said brush, a sleeve rotatably mounted on said shank having a laterally disposed slot adjacent the inner extremity thereof, a set screw on said shank slidingly engaging in said slot', a handle on said sleeve and a spring on said shank engaged by said handle and arranged to normally maintain said shank with the set screw intermediately disposed in the slot in said sleeve,
2. The combination with a brush of a shank secured to said brush, a sleeve wherein said shank is rotatably mounted having a laterally disposed slot acent the inner extremity thereof, a set screw on said shank engaging said slot, a handle on said sleeve provided with a central bore, a flat spring seated in the extremity of said shank extending therefrom and disposed in said bore and a cap on s rino'.
