N.PETEHS, PHOTO-UTHOGRAPNER, WASHINGTON D c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN H. BATOHELDER, OF SALEM, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN AURICLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 177,984, dated May 30, 1876; application filed March 25, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN H. BATOHELDER, of Salem, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Auricles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in auricles for the purpose of increasing the hearing of deaf persons; and consists of a shield or case that is made to encompass and fit closely to the external part of the ear of the person using it.
This my improved auricle is sustained and held in place on the earitself without the need of springs, or other devices heretofore used, and it is open in front and on the inside, but closed in the rear; as well as on the out-side. The inside of this my improved auricle is provided with a flanged projection, in conformity with the shape of the ear of the wearer.
The invention is made rights and lefts, soas to be used for both or either ear, and it may be made of any suitable material, such as metal, leather, papier-mach, gun-cotton preparation, or other material that may be found useful for this purpose.
This my invention is very light and durable, as well as self-sustaining, and, being without any curved tubes, is not liable to get clogged up with wax or dust, as is the case with many of thekind now in use.
I am aware that auricles have heretofore been made closed all over, except the forward part, that was left open, and provided near its rear end with a curved tube, the end of which fitted into the opening of the ear; but I wish here to state that I do not claim such an arrangement as my invention.
On the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents an outside view of my improved My improved auricle is composed of the solid outside a and solid back b. The inside is provided with a lip or flange, c c, that is made to conform to the shape ofthe ear. The other part of the inside is open, by which the auricle can with great case be placed in its proper self-sustaining position on the ear, and be removed as easily, when desired.
I am aware of the patent granted to Henry S. Dimock and Joseph R. Wetherell on the 21st day of April, 1874, for auricles fitting inside of the external ear, and I Wish to state that I do not claim such a device as my invention; neither do I claim an auricle as shown in Charles G. Pages patent of N ovember 20, 1860; but
What I wish to secure by Letters Patent, and claim, is-
The herein-described auricle, consisting of the solid outside a and back I), the open inside, and the self-sustaining flange c, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own invention I have affixed my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
JOHN H. BATOHELDER.
