COIBINATION KNIFE AND SCISSORS Filed April 17. 1929 Patented July 22, 19.30
BENJAMIN F. COURT, GF LONG BEACH, CALIFORNIA COMBINATION KNIFE .AND SCISSORS Application led April 17,
This invention relates to a combination table knife and scissors and anobject of my invention is to provide a scissors in combination with a table knife which can be conveniently used for purposes of cuttingmeat,
or like substances.
Another object of my invention is to provide a combination knife and scissors in which the scissors arrangement can be held gli" in a closed position so that it will not intertere with the operation of the knife.
Still another object is to provide a convenient control sothat the scissors can be quickly opened for use.
ld' Other objects, advantages, and features of invention may appear from the accompanying drawing, the subjoined detailed description, and the appended claims.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of my combination vknife and scissors in closed position.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the same in open position. y
Figure 3 is an enlargecL sectional view,
E.; talen on line/3, 3 of VFigure 1.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view of the handle.
Figure 5 is an enlarged sectional view talren on line 5, 5 of Figure 1. Y
Figure 6 is a bottom plan view of my device. n f
Figure' Y is an enlarged sectional view oi one of the latch plungers.`
Referring more particularly to the draw- 4ing, the numeral 1 indicates the blade of the table lrnite and 2 the handle for said blade. This handle substantially ltel-shaped in cross-section so that it will conveniently fit over the handle 3 of the scissors blade A.
" flat leaf spring 5 is secured within the handle 2 and is adapted to bear against the top of the handle 3, thus tending to spread the two handles apart and open the device for use as scissors, shown in lligure 2.
" ln order to hold the blade 4 in closed posi- 192e. serial No. 355,733.
tion over the blade 1 it is necessary to provide a locking means for the handles 2, 3 but this locking means inust be readily releasable when itis desired to use thescis sors. This locking arrangement is, as tollows: A vertical bore 6 is drilledthrough the handle 3 and a pin 7 lits closely inthe bore 6. The pin 7 protrudes Jtrom both" the top and bottom of the handle 3, protrud'ng more at the top so that it extends through a holeV 8 drilled in the top of the handle 2. Thus itis possible for the linger of the user to press either' the top or the bottom o t the pin 7 and move' it downwardly or upwardly, as is necessary. Y i
A transverse Or horizontal bore 9 is drilled through the handle 3 and intersects the bore 6. The outer'ends of the bore 9 are covered with plates 10 10 which plates are suitably secured to the handle 3. A pair of latch plungers are positioned in the bore 9 and the heads 12 of the plungers are adapted to lit into an annular recess 13 in the pin t Springs 14 bear againstthe head 12 to nor-A mally urge the plungers inwardly against the pin and into the recess 13 when said recess is brought into alinement with the plungers. Each of the plungers 11 is'formedwith retractable bar 15 which bar extends into a recess 16 in the handle 2, thus holding the handle in closed position. When the pin 7 is moved upwardly to bring the recess 13 in alinement with thehead 12 these heads will drop into the recess and will retract he bars 15, thus permitting the handles 2, 3 to swing apart under the urge of the spring 5. A. spring 17 in the head 12 urges the bar 15 outwardly into its recess in the handle 2, the bar 15 has an enlargement within the head 12 against which the spring 17 bears, and this enlargement acts to mjove the VbarV when the head drops into the recess 13.
Thus the pin 7 may be moved downwardly to push the heads .12, 12 outwardly before the handle 2 is swung over the handle 3. As
the handle 2 swings downwardly the bars l5 will retract sufficient to allow the two handles to come together and as soon as the recess 16 is reached the bars will spring` out- Wardly and lock my device so that it may be conveniently used as a knife.
Having described my invention, 1 claim:
1. A combination knife and scissors comprising a knife blade, a handle on the knife blade, scissors blade, said scissors blade being pivoted to the knife blade, a handle on the scissors blade, said first named handle being recessed to receive said last named handle, and lock means whereby said handles are i held in closed position, and spring means between said handles whereby they are swung apart when said lock means is released.
2. A combination knife and scissors comprising a knife blade, a handle on the knife blade, a scissors blade, said scissors blade being pivoted to the knife blade, a handle on the scissors blade, said first named handle being recessed to receive said last named handle, a pin slidably mounted in said last named handle, said pin protruding,` from both sides of said handle, and means engageable with said pin adapted to engage said first named handle whereby said handles are held in closed position.
3. A combination knife and scissors comprising a knife blade, a handle on the knife blade, a scissors blade, said scissors blade be-A ing pivoted to the knife blade, a handle on the scissors blade, said first named handle being recessed to receive said last named handle, a pin slidably mounted in said last named handle, said pin protruding from both sides of said handle, a latch plunger adapted to engage said pin, a retractable bar extending from said latch plunger, said bar being adapted to engage said first named handle to hold the same in closed position.
4. A combination knife and scissors comprising a knife blade, a handle on the knife blade, a scissors blade, said scissors blade being pivoted to the knife blade, a handle on the scissors blade, said first named handle being recessed to receive said last named handle, said last named handle having a vertical bore therethrough, and a horizontal bore intersecting said vertical bore, a pin slidably mounted in said vertical bore, lock plungers in said horizontal bore, retractable bars in said lock plungers, said first named handle having recesses therein to receive said bars, said pin havin g a. recess therein to permit inward movement of said plungers.
5. A. combination knife and scissors comprising` a knife blade, a handle on the knife blade, a scissors blade, said scissors blade being' pivoted to the knife blade, a handle on the scissors blade, said first named handle being recessed to receive said last named handle, said last named handle having a vertical bore therethrough, and a horizontal bore innevrosi tersecting' said vertical bore, a pin slidably mounted in said vertical bore, lock plungers in said horizontal bore, retractable bars in said lock plungcrs, said first named handle having recesses therein to receive said bars,
