This invention relates to improvements in automatic gum tape dispensing machines and especially to cutting mechanism therefor.
The primary object of the invention resides in a cutting mechanism for gum tape machines by which relatively wide heavy gum tape may be completely severed after the desired length of tape has been paid out, which is a decided improvement over the 10 cutting mechanism heretofore provided in machines of the kind, wherein. it has been found impractical strip of tape when relatively wide tape is inserted in the machine.
Another object of the invention is to provide an automatic cutting mechanism for gum tape machines in which the knife blade remains in a stationary position upon the downward movement of the actuating lever 2 by which the tape feeding means is operated, but which is automatically actuated upon the full upward return movement of the lever to completely sever the, tape strip which passes through the machine in the path of 25 said knife blade. 7

From the description thus far, it will be seen that if the free end of the tape inserted between the coacting rollers 17 and 20 and the lever 22 depressed, the driven feed roller will feed the end of the strip to the moistening roller 18 and its co-acting guide roller 20. Upon each full depression of the actuating lever, a predetermined length of strip is fed outwardly across the moistening roller, the spring 26 serving to return the lever upon release of the same after reaching the limit of its downward movement.
Having fully explained the construction and operation of the gum tape feeding means, I shall now describe the construction and operation of my improved cutting mechanism for use in connection therewith. Fixedly mounted to the side walls of the casing and extending transversely thereof'forward of the vertical plane of the *feed roller 17 is a transverse bridge bar or plate 30, thelower edge of which terminates on a horizontal plane slightly above the lower surface of the guide rollers 20 to allow the tape to pass be,- neath the same as clearly shown in Figure 4 of the drawings. The right end of the bridge i bar extends beyond the plane of movement of the manipulating handle of the lever 22 and has pivoted thereto a knife blade 31. The pivot bolt 32 has a spring 33 mounted thereon between the knife blade and its head to place a tension on the blade to keep the same tight against the bridge bar and to take up wear between the same. The lower edge of the knife blade is cut-away or notched as at 34 to normally seat upon a plate 35 adjustably mounted on the manipulating handle of the lever by a screw 36 passing through a slot 37 in the plate and threaded into the handles as shown in Figure 5 of the drawings. The cutout portion 34 allows the knife blade to drop 5 to an inclined position out of the path of movement of. the gum strip to permit free feeding movement of the same.
Pivoted to the knife blade is a bell crank 38 having one of its arms extending the right side wall of the casing and terminating in a bevelled edge 39 in the path of downward movement of the plate 35 for free movement of the inner edge of the plate thereover. The other arm of the bell crank is operatively connected to one arm of a sec- 0nd bell crank 40 by a link 41, and which lat ter bell crank is pivoted in a bracket 42 extending inwardly from one of the side walls of the casing. A link 43 connects the outer end of the relatively long arm of the bell crank 40 with the free end of the knife blade,
and which bell crank and links serve to rapldly lift the free end of the knife blade upwardly into cutting engagement with the tape strip. A contractile spring 44 has its ends respectively connected to the short arm of the bell crank 40 and tothe left side wall of the casing to return the parts to normal plosclitlon after each cutting operation of, the
beyond The cutting mechanism operates as follows :Upon downward movement of the lever 22 to actuate the feeding mechanism, the inner edge of the plate 35 freely rides over the bevelled face of bell crank 38 but slightly moves the same to allow the edge of the plate to extend inward of the vertical plane of the end of the bell crank. This slight movement of the bell crank is loosely taken up by the link 41 so that it does not affect the knife blade 31. Upon release of the actuating lever by an operator, the spring 26 returns the ac- 'tuating lever to its raised position and durof the bell crank, which movement actuates the other bell crank 40 through the link 41 to lift the long arm of the same upwardly, which long arm being connected to the knife blade by the link 43, lifts the free end of the knife blade to a position where the knife edge of the blade is above the plane of the bottom edge of the bridge bar. This movement is very rapid and occurs after the lever has travelled'the betterpart of its distance from a fully depressed position to a fully raised position. The lower edge of the bridge bar 30 co-acts with the knife edge of the cutting blade in the manner of a scissor, the cutting beginning at the right edge of the strip of tape and gradually extending entirely across the strip until fully severed.
The plate 35 releases the bell crank lever 38 ust before the lever reaches its fully raised position and for this purpose, I provide a notch 45 in the plate at the front inner sides thereof through which the end of the bell crank drops during its travel thereover, it being appreciated that the plate'moves on an arc in its downward and upward movements. When the bell crank is released, the spring44 rapidly returns the elements of the cutting mechanism to normal position for operation upon the next depression'andiupward return movement of the actuating lever. By adjustably mounting the plate 35 on the mani t lating handle of the lever, it is possible to adjust the same with respect to the bevelk l edge of the bell crank 38to compensate for any wear which may occur between these parts.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that the actuating lever may be actuated to feed the gum tape through feed rollers and moistening roller, and upon each release of the actuating lever, the cutting mechanism automatically operates to completely sever handle may be actuated several times must not be let back to cause actuation of the cutting mechanism.
While I have described what I deem to be the most desirable embodiment of my invention, it is obvious that many of the details may be varied without in any way departing from the spirit of my invention, and I therefore do not limit myself to the exact details 7f construction herein set forth nor to anything less than the whole of my invention limited only by the appended claims.
What is claimed as new is 2- 1. In combination with the spring actuated lever of a gum tape dispensing machine, a transverse bar beneath which the strip of gum tape to be dispensed is adapted to pass, a knife blade pivoted to one side of said bar for swinging movement with respect thereto, a striker plate, means for adjustably mounting said striker plate on said actuating lever, and knife blade actuating means operable by said striker plate during an interval in the return movement of said actuating lever after depression and release of the same.
2. In combination with the spring actuated lever of a gum tape dispensing machine, a transverse bar beneath which the strip of gum tape to be dispensed is adapted to pass, a knife blade pivoted to one side of said bar for swinging movement with respect thereto, a striker plate carried by said actuating lever, and knife blade actuating means operable by said striker plate during an interval in the return movement of said actuating lever after depression and release of the same, said knife blade actuating means including a bell crank pivoted to said knife blade and having one of its arms extending into the path of upward movement of said striker plate.
3. In combination with the spring actuated lever of a gum tape dispensing machine, a transverse bar beneath which the strip of gum tape to be dispensed is adapted to pass, a knife blade pivoted to one side of said bar for swinging movement with respect thereto, a striker plate carried by said actuating lever, and knife blade actuating means operable by said striker plate during an interval in the return movement of said actuating lever after depression and release of the same, said knife blade actuating means including a bell crank pivoted to said knife blade and having one of its arms extending into the path of upward movement of said striker plate, and means on said striker plate for releasing said bell crank from engagement therewith prior to the limit of return move ment of said actuating lever.
4. In combination with the spring actuated lever of a gum tape dispensing machine, a transverse bar beneath which the strip of gum tape to be dispensed is adapted to pass, a knife blade pivoted to one side of said bar for swinging movement with respect thereto, a striker plate carried by said actuating lever, and knife blade actuating means operable by said striker plate during an interval in the return movement of said actuating lever after depression and release of the same, said knife blade actuating means including a bell crank pivoted to said knife blade and having one of its arms extending into the path of upward movement of said striker plate, and means on said striker plate for releasing said bell crank from engagement therewith prior to the limit of return movement of said actuating lever, and spring means for returning said actuating means to normal position upon release of said bell crank.
5. In a gum tape dispensing machine, a pivotally mounted actuating lever, a pivoted knife blade, knife blade actuating means including a bell crank lever, and a striker plate adjustably mounted directly on said actuating lever for idly engaging said bell crank lever upon downward movement of said actuating lever and for operatively engaging the same during an interval in the upward return movement of said actuating lever.
