GEORGE E. G. JONES, OF MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CALENDAR-INKS I'ANDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 176,183, dated April 18, 1876; application filed August 12, 1875.
To all whom "it may concern Be it knownthatl, GEORGE E. G.- JONES, of Memphis, county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Inkstands with Calendar at tached, of which the following is a specifica' tion:
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a calendarinkstand, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a side elevation of an inkstand embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same.
A represents the well or glass portion of an inkstand, molded in any suitable form, and inclosed within a jacket, B, of paper, metal, or other suitable material. In the exterior surface of the well A are molded three grooves for the reception of three calendarrings, G, D, and E, which may be made of paper, metal, or other suitable material, and also inclosed by the jacket B. On the outside of the top ring G are printed or otherwise affixed the names of the seven days of the week, and between such names the ring is provided with perforations X for the application of a pin, the end of a pen-holder, or other similar instrument for turning the same. On the middle ring D are the numbers 1 to 31, and on the bottom ring E are the names of the twelve months in the year, and these rings are also, between said numbers and names, provided with perforations X, as described, for the top ring D. In the jacket B are openings to a,
corresponding with the size of the various names and figures on the rings, including the perforations on each side thereof, so that the rings can easily be moved and show the name or figure of'one day, date, and month only at a time. The rings 0 D E are, of course, movable independent of each other, and the two top rings 0 D are to 'be set daily, while the bottom ring E is to be set only on the first of each month.
If desired, the calendar-rings may be arranged so as to be set only once a month, in
which case there will be only one or two movable rings necessary, the second or third one being dispensed with. For instance, the dates may then be arranged on the jacket in the usual form for monthly calendars, and the movable day-ring having the names of the day's arranged to correspond with the columns of figures.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An inkstand, composed of any suitable material, and provided with an internal ink-well, A, and exterior circumferential grooves, in the manner described, said grooves being I closed by calendar-rin gs C D E, provided with holes X, by means of which holes the said rings are operated through suitable openings in an externaljacket B, the whole operating in the manner substantially as described, for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I hereunto affix my signature this 7th day of August, 1875.
