This invention relates generally to printed forms and more particularly to a combined 5 separate but more generally have their side ed es connected in the form of a fan-fold W6%; a suitable variety of forms being printed upon the plies, and each form being torn off after typing, as set forth in the Wernery and Smith Patent No. 1,132,055, dated March 16, 1915.

In some cases one of the duplicate forms is in the nature of an orderblank, which, when typed, is placed in the hands of the person who collects the goods and delivers them to the shipping room. A single order sometimes covers a great variety of goods, and it is necessary that the order be split up and the difierent items thereof sent to different departments for execution. Each item occupies only a single line of typing, and it has been found impracticable to type these split orders atthe same time that the original is typed upon the fan-fold form. This is because there must be typed upon a single fan-fold form a com plete schedule of the items, whdreas usually there must be typed upon each of the split-up orders only a single item. One of the objects of this invention is to overcome this diificulty and enable the individual orders to ,be typed upon appropriate forms simultaneously with typing of the composite order upon the manifold forms.

For the orders, a sheet is provided having a,

series of transverse perforated lines dividing the sheet or slip into sections 'or coupons adapted to be torn apart. A single item, composing a part of the order, is ordinarily-written on each of these sections, so that the successive' items on the sectional order-sheet or:

, slip appear with considerable space intervening between them. The same items appear on great difference in the line-spacingof the same items on the bill and order-sheet or slip.

In using a machine of this type, the leading edgesof the main work-webs are withdrawn from between the platen and the feed-rollers after the'completion of each bill, and lifted up to permit the insertion beneath the main Webs of a set of sectional order-sheets and carbon-sheets, so that these sectional ordersheets or slips will be presented to the types outside of the main webs on the platen, that is, in a position where the slips may be grasped and adjusted upwardly by the operator, and where the outer slip will be visible 1 to the operator.

As above pointed out, the items are differently spaced on the bills and on the sectional order-sheets. In order that they may be written simultaneously, therefore, it is necessary that the bill Webs and the sectional ordersheets be advanced different distances between the typing of successive-items. The bill is advanced by the usual line-spacing mechanism of the tvpewriter.

Another difficulty has arisen because, in splitting up the order, it has been the practice to typewrite the customers address upon eachsection of the split-up order, although it is not desirable that such address should be repeated for each item upon the fan-fold form, which should contain all of the items and only one address. This 'difiicultyis also sought to be overcome by the present invention; To. this end the address of the customer is printed upon the first of the sectional forms or coupons, which may have .a blank heading space for the purpose, and the same address, of course, will appear upon all'of the fan-fold plies. The address is not repeated,

and does not appear upon any of the remaining item forms or coupons. To serve the same purpose as the address, however, a certain ofiice number is printed or stamped upon --the separate itemforms or coupons, using the same number for each set of forms, The itein forms are then distributed .to various departments, and as the orders are filled they are forwarded to the shipping department,

This is a division of my application, Serial No. 586,064, filed September 5, 1922 (nowadapted to be used in a fan-fold machine.

The bill-webs 10 and the sectional order slip 12 are typed simultaneously in the typewri machine in the following manner: The carbon-sheets upon the carbon-holder are C3 interleaved with the several bill webs 10; sectional order-sheets 12 are then selected, having as many sections or coupons 11 as there are items in the order, or preferably a complete set of coupons forming a sheet as prepared by the printer is used, and, if more than one sectional order-sheet of,coupons is to be used, carbon-sheets are interleaved with them before they are presented to the machine. The platen bein in its swung-up position, the ends of the ill webs 10 are then raised, and the sectional order-sheets 12, with their carbon-sheets, are thrust backwardly into the mouth of the pocket between the walls and gages. The leading edges of the main or bill webs 10 and the sectional ordersheets 12 are then aligned and inserted around the raised platen, which is then lowered to. The operator then types normal position. the index number 14 of the order (which is obtained from the split-order slip and is there printed on the heading and each section 11 or coupon of the sectional order-sheet 12), so that the bill 10 may be identified with the sectional order-sheet 12. The index number grip and hold stationary the bill webs, which are ordinarily widerthan the sectional ordersheets. The platen is then unlatched and raised slightly to. a position, wherein the paper will be released from the influence ofthe' feed-rollers. The sectional order-sheet or slip- 12 is then drawn forward independently of the main work-web 10 until the second section or coupon of the slip is in position to reciiive the second item 17. The platen is then restored to its normallowered or printing position, and the clamps are moved to release the bill webs 10 for line-feeding. A paper-knife may conveniently be used as a gage in conjunction with the perforated lines 13 for determining the position of the sec- .tional order-sheet 12 at each 'adjustmentthereof. This adjusting of the order-sheet or slip is repeated after each item until all of V theitems have been typed. The platen is then raised, the sectional order-sheet is re moved, and the. coupons are detached from each other to be distributed among the several departments, or, in case an entire sheet of forms is used and the individual items do not cover all the sections thereof, the coupons may be detached, beginning with the top one,

and each down to the last section upon which an item of the order is typed. On this last t ped section, the remalning untyped SOC- tlons Wlll be-left attached, and the group of;

this way, a check may be made upon the numparcels of the order are collected for shipment, since, in case, as shown, the sheet contains seven sectional parts when all seven of the parts are received w th the arcels at the shipping department, it will e known that the complete order has been received for shipment. In this way, an order, of say four items, is typed upon t e the sheet and the sheet may be divided into order-coupons, the first three sections being detached as three order-coupons and the last four sections with thesingle item constitutivrriiglthe fourth coupon of the order. between the portions of the bill webs which have just been written upon, and position them for writing the succeeding bill. The platen is then lowered to grip the bill webs, and the portions which have been written upon are torn off by use of the knife. The platen is then raised a second time, the bill webs are withdrawn to permit the insertion of a second set of sectional order-sheets or coupons, and the entire cycle is repeated.

It will be understood, of course, that several items afiecting a single department may, if desired, be typed on the same sectional order-sheet or coupon.

Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and ortions of the im rovements ma be used w1thout others.

aving thus escribed my invention, I claim:

1. A collocation of sheets for type-mani- 4 foldin both a bill of many items and a set of order- 'stributors and parcel-collectors, said collocation including a relatively short billblank and a relatively long set of coupons,

2. A sheet for use in type-manifolding both a bill of many items and a set of orderdistributors and parcel-collectors, said sheet consisting of a lon set of coupons joined to one another by Wea ened lines, and being appropriately identified by the same number upon each thereof toa'gree with the number on the bill, said couponesheet appropriately printed with account-identifying headings and data to agree with theheading on the bill, the height of each coupon being of many times the pitch of the line-spacing usually employed upon a bill, and being sufliciently ample to enable the coupon to be usable as a ticket for use in making up andthen accompanying the parcel to which it belongs, to serve as an identifying slip thereon, said coupon-sheet having a top extension upon which its said heading is printed, said extension serving as a hand-hold to permit the sheet to be grasped thereby to advance it independently of the bill-sheet to effect wide spacing on the coupon-sheet of lines manifolded with ordinary spacingupon the billsheet.
