Description

Oct. 29, 1929. F. LEAL 1,733,890
ADYERTI S ING DEVICE Filed Jan 1928 INVENTOR WITNESS: ATTORNEY Patented Oct, 29, 1929 .UNH'E'ED sraras ear carries FRANCISCO IDEAL, OF SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA ADVERTISING DEVICE Application filed January 3, 1928. Serial No. 244,266.
is to provide an advertising device for public .7
conveyances, such as street cars, railroad passenger cars, busses and the like, and said device is to be used in combination with the advertising card holders now employed, with 0 no change to the holders.
A further object of the invention is to provide an advertising device of the character set forth, that is capable of receiving advertising'cards and the like, in an easy and expeditious manner, and so that they can be displayed to attract the attention of a casual observer.
Another object of the invention is to provide an advertising device that is extremely simple in construction and is inexpensive to manufacture. v
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which: i
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device vention and showing its application to the advertising card holders now generally em-" '40 2-2 of Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Figure 2 looking in the direction of the arrows and showing the device in open position.
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary perbest shown in Figure '3'.
forming the subject matter of the present inpublic conveyance and which includes the '1 usual advertising card holding means which has a curved card receiving surface Bwith flanged guides C disposed to engage the edges of cards in the usual manner.
' formed from metal and have closed portions indicated by the reference numeral 2 and open portions 3'in the form of a frame as a The sheets have their lower ends 'bentupwardlyupon themselves to provide a channel shape guide 4 for the purposeof receiving an advertising card 5 in the closed portions 2 anda transparent member 6 in the open portions 3, and'these cards and transin Figure 1 through the instrumentality of coil springs 8, t
' The card'receivingj surface Bis adapted to have secured thereto lamp sockets 9 for receivingilamps 10 which of course are in connection with a suitable source ofcurrent,
and these lamps 10 are only disposed to the rear ofthetransparent member 6 so that the advertising matter on the transparent members can be readily seen;
The strips 7 are further provided with a centrally disposed outwardly flared portion The device which forms the subject matter of the present invention isadapted to be fixed parent members are retained in the guides 4 by strips 7 hingedly secured to the top-of the sheets and'heldin operative position as shown 11 in order toprovide a finger engaging surface for the purpose of disposing the strips to open position againstthe tension of the coil. springs8thereof and these flared portions 11 overlie the screws 1 of the closed por- It will be noted that the screws 1 are 2 I a i a 1,733,890
transparent members in operative position as it will be apparent that the transparent members are considerably heavier than the advertising cards 5. When it is desired to re- 5 move the transparent members, the screws 1 for the strips thereoi must be removed, but the cards can be removed: by merely lifting their strips against the tension of the coil springs 8. v p r r 10 Held in operative position by the guides" at and the strips 7 are the usual flexible strips 12 for covering the edges of the cards and transparent members as best shown in Fig ures 1 and 3 of the drawings.
15 r The advertising matter supported by or on the transparent members can be of any character suohas letters and'figures cutfrom card board, wood or the like, and the out out portions may be covered with colored semi-trans- LO parent material'so that it canbe illuminated I by lamps of any desired color, arranged and operated in any desired .mannen For example, the lamps may be arranged and operated'rto produce a still picture in an ad 915 vertisement; or give the appearance oi onein motion.
From the .above description and disclo- 1 sure of the drawings, it will be obviousthat I have provided an: advertising device tor 5 street cars and the" like,v that'can be associated with theicard holders now employed therein or it can be provided in: cars at the time of their'manufacture, in which event the. flanged guides C -wouldbe dispensed.
1555 with, and my device supports advertising m'atter in amanner'so thati t will attract the attentionof a casual observer; It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my in e t will be readily apparent Idesire it. to be: understood that I may make: changes in the constructionand in the I combination and arrangement zofflthe several 1 parts, provided that such changes fall within 15 the. scope of the appendedvclaim. What I claim is: An advertising device: of the character-"described comprisingsheets adaptedto be sew cured atan inclination, and having closed 7 7 5o andopen portionsfluideflariges formed with the bottom of said sheets, spring pressed stripssecured to the upper ends or said sheets and cooperating with vthe guide'flanges to hold advertising cards and advertising trans- 5.55 parent members inoperative position With respect to the el'oseda-nd open portions, means for illuminating the transparent members, and'flexible strips covering the vconfronting edges of the cards and transparent members; 7
69 In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
