Description

Sept. 7, 1929 A. F. BAILLY RETAINING DEVICE Filed March 29, 1928 l N V E NTO R Arikar Ifiaa'lfy BY ATTORN EY WITNESSES UNITED STATES ARTHUR r. BAILLY, or YABDVILLE, NEW J RSEY RETAINING DEVICE Application filed March 29, 1928. Serial No. 265,607.
This invention relates to means which may be employed for adjustably and detaehably holding, and for forming a brace between relatively movable component parts of an article, such as a folding chair, and which may be used in conjunction with parts of other articles to be held in dillerent adjusted positions or angular relationships with respect to each other.
The principal object of the present invention is the provision of appurtenances characterized by novel and improved features, which coact or cooperate for the intended purposes, and which when in use, make it possible to carry out adjusting, holding and bracing operations quickly and easily.
The nature of the invention and its distinguishing features and advantages will appear when the following specification is read I in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 illustrates the appurtenances of the present invention applied to a folding chair.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2'2 of Fig. 1 on an enlarged scale.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 8-3 of Fig. 2.
. The appurtenances of the present invention are shown applied to a folding chair which is by way of example of one use of these appurtenances, and it is to be understood that the appurtenances may be employed in conjunction with other articles requiring adjustment or retainment of parts thereon.
In accordance with the present invention use is made of a plurality of attachments 10, of similar construction, and each consisting of an elongated plate having a hole 11 therein and notches 12 arranged diametrically opposite each other, and each being opened to said hole 11. The plate 10 is provided at each end with a hole for the accommodation of a suitable fastening element such as a screw 13. A suitable number of the plates 10 are secured to each side rail 14 forming a part of a folding chair. Said rail 14 is provided with a recess 15 over which each plate 10 is secured.
Adapted to coact or cooperate with each of the attachments 10 is an appurtenance 16. The said appurtenance 16 includes an element consisting of rigidmembers 17 and 18, the former being much longer than the latter, and the said members 17 and 18 being hingedly connected together as at19, thus making a jointed element. One end of the appurtenance .16 is swivelly connected with a side rail 20 of the chair, the said rail 20 being connected with the rail 14 hereinbefore referred to for relative movement. The swivel connection in the present instance is produced by the use of an attachment 21 consisting of an eye 22 and integral melnber23. The eye 22 is connected as at 2 1 with the end of the PATENT OFFlC Ei member 17 and the member 23 extends through the rail 20,-and is prevented from being separated from the rail by a head and washer 25 orany other means. It will now be understood that the appurtenance 16 will have swingingmovement with respect to the attachment 21, and that the attachment21 will have turning movement withrespect to the rail 20. The appurtenance 16 also includes an interlocking device 26 which is designed to be engaged with any one of the at tachments 10. The device 26 is carriedby the rigid member 18. The said device 26' includes a stud 27 whichextends through a hole in the member 18, the said stud having a transverse pin which provides projecting ends 28, and said stud 27 also has a manipu lating knob 29. The stud 27 is under the in fiuence of a spring arranged between the member 18 and the knob29. a In the application of the appurtenances of the present invention, it will be apparent that, when it is desired to adjust the angular relationship of the parts constituting the chair shown in Fig. 1, and to hold the said parts substantially braced, it is only necessary to swing the appurtenance 16 to a position so that the device 26 may be interlocked with one of the attachments 10. Thisis accomplished by manipulating the stud 27 to bring the projecting ends28 respectively into the notches 12, then pressing on the knob 29 to bring the ends 28 within the recess 15. The knob 29 is then given a quarter turn, and is released, whereupon the spring 30 functions to bring the ends 28 of the pin into engage ment With the attachment or plate 10. By making the appurtenance 16 of jointed construction, it is possible to obtain the necessary 5 and proper disposition of the device 26 With respect to any particular one of the attachments 10, it also being apparent that the swivel connection provided by the attachment 21 also makes it possible to obtain the proper angular position of the appurtenance 16 in its entirety.
By providing an attachment 10 on the rail 20 with which the appurtenance 16 is connected, it is possible to detacha-bly hold the appurtenance 16 in place when not in use as indicated in dot and dash lines inFig. 1.
It is to be understood that the invention is not restricted to the precise arrangement of parts shown and described, as details of con 20 struction may be modified and rearranged wit-l'iout departing from the spirit the in vention, the scope of which is limited only by the terms of the appended claim.
I claim:
The combination Withrelatively movable component parts of an article oi? a plurality I of similar attachments on one of said parts, an element consisting of rigid members hingedly connected together, means connected With one end of one of said rigid members I for swivelly connecting said element with one of said parts, and a device on one end of the other rigid member, said device adapted to be detachabiy connected with any one of said attachments to connect said parts together and to form a brace between said parts.
Signed at city of Trenton, in-the county of Mercer, and State of New Jersey this 24th day of March, A. I). 1928.
