SMOKIN G ARTICLE.

My invention relates to smokin articles, more particularly to self-extinguis able cigarettes or cigars, and the objects of my invention are: first; to provide a smoking 5 article of this class which will extinguish itself after a predetermined portion has been consumed; second, to provide an article of this class which is provided with a fluid containing reservoir positioned therein which melts when the ignited end of the smoking article reaches the reservoir; third, to provide an article of this class which, if thrown by the roadside or left lighted any place, will extinguish itself; fourth, to provide an article of this class in which the self-extinguishable reservoir therein does not interfere with the smoking thereof; and, fifth, to provide an article of this class which is simple of construction, durable, efficient and positive in its action.

With these and other objects in view, as Will appear hereinafter, my invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the characters of reference thereon which form a part of this application, in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cigarette showing the relative position of my extinguishing reservoir therein by dotted lines; Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view of a cigarette with the reservoir positioned therein; Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view thereof through 3-3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view of the butt end of the cigarette after burning down to the reservoir; Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a cigar with my reservoir positioned therein' as indicated by dotted lines.

Like characters of reference refer to similar parts and portions throughout the several views of the drawings.

The cigarette 1, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4, is preferably made of prepared tobacco and enclosed in a flexible pa r wrapper in the conventional manner. ositioned near the butt end of the cigarette, and centered therein, is a reservoir 2, which is formed from thin, tough, resilient material, such as rubber or waterproof gelatin. The reservoir 2, is substantially conical in' shape with the pointed end thereof extending towards the ignitible end of the cigarette. The reservoir is filled with a fluid 3, which may be water or any other suitable noncombustible fluid.

Ordinarily a substantial amount of a cigarette is thrown away and it is desired to position the reservoir so that the tip thereof extends to the edge of the portion which is usually thrown away. The drawing end of the cigarette, the butt, burns down until the tip of the rubber reservoir 2 is melted and the water is discharged putting the cigarette out when it has burned to the position shown in Fig. 4.

In Fig. 5 of the drawings I have shown the reservoir 2 positioned in a cigar 4.

It is obvious from the construction as illustrated in the drawings, and described in the foregoing specification, that there is provided a smoking article of the class described as aimed at and set forth in the objects of the invention, and though I have shown and described a particular construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions, I do not wish. to be limited to this particular construction, combination and arrangement, but desire to include in the scope of my invention the construction, combination and arrangement substantially as set forth in the appended claims.

Havin thus described my invention, what I c aim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a self extin ishable smoking article, a prepared smo ing product, an easily melted reservoir centered therein near the one end thereof, and a fire extinguishable fluid contained in said reservoir.

2. In a self extinguishable smoking article, the combination of a cigarette, a conical shaped easily melted reservoir positioned in spaced relation from the butt end thereof, and fire extinguishable fluid therein.

4. In a self extinguishable' smoking article, an easily melted capsule positioned near but spaced from the butt end in a prepared I smoking roduct.
