Description
C. F. MOSSHOLDE R. SOLE-PROTECTOR FOR BOOTS AND SHOES.
No.171,837. Patented J'an. 4,1876.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
CALVIN F. MOSSHOLDER, FALLSBURG, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT l| \l SOLE-PROTECTORS FOR BOOTS AND SHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 171,837., dated January 4, 1876; application filed November 24, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CALVIN F. MOSSHOLDER, of Fallsburg, in the county of Licking and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Protectors for the Soles of Boots and bhoes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a bottom plan, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
This invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a metallic protector in such a manner as to prevent lateralniotion of the two parts or sections of which it consists,
even if some of the rivets, pegs, or stitches by.
which it is secured to the sole should wear out or become detached, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.
Ais the sole, and B O is the protector. The
latter consists of two pieces, B and O, as shown, each of which is riveted onto the un der side of the sole along the edge thereof, as shown. The toe-piece B terminates at each side in a projection, 12, which fits loosely into a recess, 0, cut into the opposite ends of the other piece, 0. This is for the purpose of permitting the sole to be bent in walking, as shown in Fig. 2, which would be impossible if B C were one rigid piece; and by this construction I also prevent lateral motion of either of the pieces B or 0 if the rivets, pegs, or stitches by which they are secured to the sole should give way or wear out. It is at that part of the sole where it is bent in walking, and where the pieces B O are divided, that pegs or rivets are most likely to start, or the stitches to break; but when this occurs the projecting tongues b will efl'ectually prevent lateral motion.
This protector is specially adapted to plowboots, miners boots, and other heavy work of a similar character, in which a studding of nails or rivets is now generally employed for the purpose of preventing too rapid wear; but by making the protector ot'sole-leather, rubber, or other similar suitable material, it may be used on goods of a finer grade, such as ladies and gents winter walking-boots, pegs 0r sewingbeing then substituted for the rivets.
I am aware that it is not new toprotect the sole of a boot or shoe by means of metallic plates riveted or otherwise secured to the under side of the sole, and hence I do not claim such a protector, broadly; but
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
In a protector for the soles of boots and shoes, constructed substantially as herein described, the projecting tongues or tenons b and recesses 0, arranged and operating as and for the purpose shown and specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto atfixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CALVIN F. MOSSHOLDER.
