WINDOW CONSTRUCTION.

The invention relates to window constructions and refers more particularly to window constructions of motor vehicles which are designed for use with window regulators. (The of the objects of the invention s to provide a window construction which is so arranged that the window may be prop erly guided and at the same t me raised or lowered with a minimum frictional loss. Another object is to simplify the construction of frame and guide ways for the window and still retain the above advantageous feature. With these as well as other objects in view the invention resides in the novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as more fully hereinafter set forth.

its shown in the present instance 1 is the frame of a motor vehicle door having the opening 2 in its upper portion and the chamber 3 in its lower portion, dow in the nature of a glass panel, this window being vertically slidable from a position closing the opening into the chamber. The window is adapted to be raised or lowered by a suitable window regulator having the pivotal lifter arino which has the roller 6 engageable in the channel 7 which is secured to the metallic channel-shaped strip 8 embracing and secured to the lower edge of the glass panel.
For the purpose of properly guiding the window and holding the same from rattling as well as for the purpose of reducing to a minimum the friction which must be overcome in raising or lowering the window I have so arranged the parts that binding of the window in its guide ways is avoided or at least reduced to a minimum. In detail 9 are channel-shaped guide ways secured to the uprights 10 of the frame 1 and at opposite sides of the window opening 2. These guide ways are formed of suitable material such as felt and embrace the opposite side edges of the glass panel forming the window. 11 are other guide ways preferably in the nature of V-shaped grooves exand l is the wintending longitudinally of the uprights 10 of the frame and terminating adjacent to the lower ends of the guide ways 9 near the upper portion of the lock board 12. The glass panel preferably has downwardly converging side edges and the lower portions of these side edges are maintained out of contact with the bases of the channel-shaped guide ways 9 by means of the rollers 12' preferably formed of soft rubber and having V-shaped rims engaging in the grooved guide ways 11. These rollers are mounted upon the pins 13 which extend between the bifurcations 1a of the clips 15. The clips are preferably longitudinally adjustably secured to the channel-shaped strip 8 so that lateral movement of the lower end of the window relative to the guide ways in the frame may be prevented; and, as shown, the clips have the ll-shaped bodies 16 embracing the channel-shaped strip and provided with the longitudinally extending elongated open ings 17 in their bases through which the securing bolts 18 extend. These bolts also extend through the base of the channelshaped strip and have their heads below the glass panel, their lower ends being threaded for engagement with the securing nuts.
With the above construction it will be seen that the window may be properly guided and held from rattling and at the same time the friction incurred in raising or lowering the window is greatly reduced so that it is practicable to use window regulators having lifter arms which apply force off center of the window and also to use windows of great width.
What it claim as my invention is:
1. The combination with a frame and substantially parallel channel-shaped guide ways thereon, of a panel having downwardly converging side edges, the upper portions of said side edges being engageable with the bases of said guide ways, and means upon said frame separate from said guide ways for maintaining the lower portions of said side edges from engagement with the bases of said guide ways.
2. The combination with a frame and substantially parallel channel-shaped guide ways thereon, of a panel having downwardly converging side edges the upper portions of said side edges being engageable with the bases of said guide ways and means upon the lower end. of said panel and engageable with said frame for maintaining the lower portions of said side edges from engagement with the bases of said guideways.
3. The combination with a frame and substantially parallel channel-shaped guide ways thereon, of a panel having downwardly converging side edges, the upper portions of said side edges being engageable with the bases of said guide ways, substantially parallel guide ways upon said frame separate from said first mentioned guide ways, and means upon the lower end of said panel and engageable with said last mentioned guide ways to maintain the lower portions of said side edges out of engagement with the bases of said first mentioned guide ways.
4. The combination with a frame having an opening and substantially parallel guideways at one end of said opening and extending in the direction thereof, of guideways at opposite sides of said opening, a window having its side edges engageable with said second mentioned guideways and in limited contact at one end with the bases thereof, a strip embracing an opposite end of said win dow, clips secured to said strip, and means carried by said clips and engaging with said first-mentioned guideways for holding the portions of the side edges of said Window intermediate the limited points of contact thereof with said second mentioned guideways and said strip out of contact with the bases of said second mentioned guideways.
