IMPROVEMENT IN EAR-MUFFLERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,942, dated December 14, 1875; application filed October 26, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, BUTLER EDGAR,0f Espy, Columbia county, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Ear-Mufflers, of which the following is aspecifioation:
The object of my invention is to protect the cars from the excessive cold of northern latitudes by a muffler simple in construction and easily adapted to'heads and necks of difl'erent sizes.
It consists of a frame of wire or other elastic material, covered with fur or cloth, the rear ends of the frame being inserted into a tube, so as to enlarge or decrease the size of the muffler at pleasure, as will more fully appear from the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 shows the muffler as a whole, the
ear-pads A A inside and outside, the frames- 0 G, and tube B. Figs. 2 and 3 are details of Fig. 1, showing the frame 0 O and tube B.
O C, Fig. 3, are metallic frames, made of wire,or other cheap elastic metal, nearly circular in form, the diameters in the direction of the stems D D or termini of the frames, being somewhat shorter than the transverse diameters. These frames are of suificient size to cover the ears when they are covered or padded. As they pass backward they are curved to conform to the shape of the neck or head, and their stems D D, or termini, are inserted into the tube B.
B, Figs. 1 and 2, is a metallic tube, made of lead or tin, or any cheap metal, hollow throughout, the bore being just large enough to admit easily the stems D D of the frames. The special office of this tube is to enable the wearer to adjust the size of the muffler. This tube forms part of the muffler-frame, of which the frames 0 C constitute the remainder.
A A, Fig. 1, are pads, fastened to the frames 0 G as supports, and from which they take their shape, made of fur or cloth, of such size as may be required to fully cover and protect the ears from danger by freezing.
I claim- :Ehe ear-muffler A, having the frames 0 C and tube B, combined and arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
