SHEET OF FOLDED MATERIAL.

This invention relates to a sheet of paper or other material folded to form a napkin, towel or other article. I am aware that heretofore sheets of paper have been folded in various ways to form napkins, towels, and like articles adapted to be placed in bundles of superimposed articles so as to be readily .dispensed from containers adapted to receive and hold the articles for this purpose. In some instances the folded sheet is made toinclude outer sections extending longitudinally of the article in a centrall disposed position to provide an edge or e ges to enable the user to readily grasp and remove the article for use. In such instances, however,

in the central portion of the article and consequently when stacked makes the bundle thicker in its central longitudinal section than in the outer sections thereof. I am furthermore aware that in other instances sheets of paper to form napkins, towels and 4 like articles have been folded in such a manner that the thickness of the article is uniform, making a bundle of the same of umform thickness throughout its entire extent. In such folds there is an outer section having an edge which enables the user to readily grasp an article and to take or remove the same from a dispenser for use. It is the latter form of folds that my present invention relates and'so far as I am aware, the fold made in accordance therewith is novel and presents certain advantages in the manufacture and use which have not heretofore been provided. In carrying out the invention the sheet is so folded as to comprise a plurality of substantially coextensive sections and to include an intermediate section which is folded on itself to form parts equal in width to substantially one-half the width of the coextensive sections and also to include an outer section which is folded on itself to form parts which are substantially semi-coextensive with the intermediate sections, the outer section thus folded providing a centrally dis osed edge of double thickness which may e grasped in taking the article for use, as will be hereinafter more particularly described.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a plan of a sheet of aper with the fold lines indicated thereon or folding the article into a sheet of folded material in accordance with this invention.

Fig. 3 is a perspective view taken from one position showing the completed article .at 10,11, 12, 13 and 14. These fold lines provide an outer section formed by the parts 16 and 17, a section 18, a section comprising the parts 19 and 20, and also a section 21. The sections 18 and 21 are co-extensive sections and as will be understood may be made of any desired width. The parts 16 and 17 form an outer section which is folded on itself along the line 10 so that the width of the parts 16 and 17 is substantially one-half the width of the coextensive sections 18 and 21. u The parts 19 and 20 form an intermediate section which is folded along the line 13 to he between the coextensive sections 18 and 21 and on the side of the article opposite that to whlch the outer section is folded. The width of the parts 19 and 20 of this intermediate section is also substantially one-halfthe width of the coextensive sections 18 and 21. Therefore, as will be understood, the
sheet is folded in sucha manner that transversely there are four layers of the material in all parts thereof so as to provide an article of uniform thickness and "at the same time one in which there is an outer section having an edge 22 that may be readily grasped by the user of the article'in taking the same from' a bundle or removing it from a dispenser.
As lllustated in Figs. 3 and 4 the sheet of material folded as hereinbefore described is preferably folded transversely along a line 23 substantially midway of its length to form the completed article as illustrated in these figures. When thus formed the inwardly folded intermediate sections lie on one side of the coextensive sections and the outer sections folded on themselves lie on the other side of the coextensive sections. It will be understood of course, that the coextensive sections may be multiplied to any desired number to increase the size of the article without departing from the nature and spirit of the invention.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a sheet of folded material, a rectangular section, a section folded along one long edge of the rectangular section to lie against one side thereof and folded centrally on itself so that its free edge is substantially coincident with the said long edge of the rectangular section, and another section folded along the opposite edge of the said rectangular section and also folded centrally on itself so that its free edge is substantially co-extensive with the said opposite lon edge of the rectangular section whereby the folded sheet is substantially uniform in thickness throu hout its entire width.
2. l n a sheet of folded material, a pair of substantially co-extensive rectangular sections, an intermediate section folded inwardly from corresponding edges of the said pair of co-ex-tensive rectangular sections and folded centrally on itself substantially midway of the said co-extensive rectangular sections, and an outer section folded on the opposite edge of one of the said co-extensive rectangular sections and folded centrally on itself whereby its free edge is substantially coincident with the edge of the said rectangular section on which it is folded and whereby the sheet of folded material is substantially uniform in thickness throughout its entire width.
