This invention relates to work bench vise screws and has speclal reference to a novel means for releasing the screw for the quick with thework before setting the vise.

I am aware that other means have been provided for the quick adjustment and setting of a vise, of which a common form is an interrupted thread form of screw; but in such a screw only a small amount of movement of the vise is possible when bringing the thread into engagement with the nut, thus requiring that the vise jaws be brought by hand more or less tightlyinto engagement In approximately into engagement .with the work, the vise set,,by means of a releasable locking means, then the jaws clam ed into engagement with the work by 'a nal adjustment screw and nut having aconsiderable amount of movement, the releasable lockin means and the final adjustment screw eing mounted one common shaft.
' With the above-and other objects in view, my invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed, and more particularly described in the preferred embodiment illustrated in the accompanyin drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a ongitudinal sectional view through a: vise having my invention incorporated therein. 7

Referring nowmore particularly to the drawings, at 10 is indicated the usual standard with which the clamp 11 is adapted to coact in a manner well known to those skilled in the art. A locking sleeve 12 is positioned in the standard 10 bymeans of a collar 1 1 said sleeve being provided also with a plurality of ribs as at 13 toprevent rotation of the sleeve in the standard. A locking slot as at 15 is provided longitudinally of said sleeve, and one edge of said slot is formed with a plurality of indentures as at 16. An operating sleeve 17 is journaled in said c amp 11. -A collar 18 andIa handle 19 are mounted on said sleeve 17 so as to include said clamp between them. said slot being formed with an offset 21' extending to the end of said sleeve; An interlorly threaded adjustment sleeve 22 having a reduced and solid extension 23 is journaled in said sleeve 17 and adapted to extend through said handle 19, and a lever '24 of the form usual to vises is mounted on said extension 23.
A shaft 25 is positioned in said operating sleeve '17 and adapted to rotate therewith, said shaft being extended through and jour naled in said locking sleeve 12. One end of said shaft 25 is adapted to threadedly engage said adjustment sleeve 22 as b threads 26 and the other end of said sha t is provided with a plurality of dogs 27 adapted to. engage said "indentures 16 provided on said locking sleeve .12. A lug 28' is positioned on said shaft and adapted to engage said, operating slot 20 in said operating sleeve 17.
In the use of my invention the operator turns the operating sleeve 17 by means of thehandle 19, whereby the shaft 25 is turned by means of the lug 28 engaging the slot 20, and the dogs 27 are thus released from the indentures .16, thereby unlocking the shaft 25 from the locking s eeve 12 as shown in Figure 1. The clamp 11 may now be .moved relatively to the standard 10 to suit the work in the vise; when the desired position'has been reached, the above described operation is reversed, whereby said shaft 25 is rotated with a right hand turn and is thus locked to the standard 10 against longitudinal movement through the mutual engage-w ment of the dogs 27 with the indentures 16.
The final adjustment and tightening of the clamp .11 against the work (not shown) inserted between the clamp 11 and opposed standard 10, is now accomplished b rotating the lever 24, which being rigi ly connected to the adjustment sleeve 22, causes the-latter to rotate within the sleeve 17 in threadedengagement with the inner end of the shaft 25, whereby the clam 11 is drawn slowly and powerfully towar s the standard 10, thus securin the intervening work.'

In combination with a fixed rear standard and an outwardly disposed movable clamp,
a vise screw assembly comprising a locking sleeve rigidly mounted through the standard and having a lon itud-inal looking slotwith lateral locking in entures along-one margin, an operating sleeve ]ournaled through the clamp in allgnment; with the said locking sleeve and having an operating slotat its inner end, a handle at the outer end of the operating sleeve, a relatively short adjustthe sleeve 17 by the sleeve, the inner end thereof being interiorly' threaded and its. outer end bein redueed and extended out through the said" handle of the operating sleeve, a lever at theout'e'r end of the adjustment sleeve, a' shaftjournaled within the said locking and operating" sleeves the inner end thereof having a pluralityof dogs adapted upon rotation of the shaft to releasably engage the said locking indentures of the locking sleeve and the outer end bein threaded to engage the innerend of the a justment sleeve and having a lug back of the threaded portion adapted to releasably engage the operating, slot of the operating sleeve.
